Is there room for ancient wisdom in the modern world? This video explores this question. As our technology continues to advance, our level of wisdom has not kept pace. One of the clues may lie with indigenous cultures. Every indigenous culture on this planet is an unbroken chain of knowledge and understanding that stretches back to the beginning of human life. Each is adapted to a part of the world that has been tested and refined over thousands of generations, through a process that began even before we had words to describe what they were.
As anthropologist Wade Davis points out, it’s easy to forget that our particular worldview doesn’t exist in an absolute sense. It’s just one model of reality. And it’s only when we look at these other cultures and ancient traditions, that we recognize that there are many other ways of being. How do we reconcile technology and wisdom of the ancients?
TIMESTAMPS for wisdom of ancients in the modern world
00:00 - Prologue
00:47 - The wisdom of ancients: How did we get here?
04:16 - Part One: The Earth is dynamic and alive
05:47 - Part Two: Our sense of separateness is an illusion
07:01 - Part Three: The modern obsession with youth and the denial of death

Once again a masterpiece. For us who come from an indigenous Hindu culture which luckily is still surviving so we are made aware of the balance of 'modernity' and ancient perspectives on life. So we are brought up on this inner oneness with humanity and nature along with rest of the universe. But also we do have this connection with other ancient spiritual wisdom because they are all globally interconnected which is why videos like these really help to boost up the awareness which is now the time its needed the most..

I live in the northeastern part of India. We are indigenous community but our society is forgetting our identity and culture. The so called modernization is only bringing destruction and pollution. Not understanding the real meaning of development. We are not developing the ancient wisdom but are replacing by illusions and greed. There are lifeforms that have been sustaining parallel to our civilization. Our ancestors knew the secret connection of the life forms dependent on each others. They have identified the plants to solve health issues but now we have forgotten about these plants. We are forgetting to know who we are.

"After all, to the well organized mind, death is but the next great adventure." Albus Dumbledore. There is so much truth in this video and its commented so well! As a society we are so very terrified of death and growing old. We abuse our home planet for short term gains because thats what our global society rewards so heavily in pursuing. We're a species that is in an unpresented age where a vast majority of the people living on the planet are living BETTER than kings and queens of old YET those same people are clinically depressed and unhappy! There is this quote from the first Matrix movie where agent smith says... "I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You're a plague..." Who finds joy being a plague? I choose to believe in the goodness and heart of people and those people are the ones who are unhappy and can't put words to why they're like that. We're always looking to the selectively recorded past for solutions to the present, and there are small pockets of wisdom that can benefit us today, like the practices of meditation but like Einstein supposedly said.. "We can't solve problems using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them." Since I was a kid (not sure if this is the story for kids today), we're told WHAT to think but very rarely HOW to think. Thinking differently as much as we like to praise those who SUCCEED thinking differently like Elon Musk, as a species we tend to physically, emotionally and sometimes even financially PUNISH those who do so. Elon Musk was physically and emotionally bullied as a kid because of how differently he saw the world and acted in it. He had to leave to a place he thought he wouldn't be punished for thinking differently. Not many others are lucky to do so, so they adapt and think like everyone around them, to SURVIVE. Is it any surprise we feel he's so rare and ask why we can't have more Elon Musk's in the world? We actively don't nurture it around the world, regardless of race, location or financial backgrounds. We all have Bugs we're born with, we call them cognitive biases. If you're a human being, you have it. Doesn't matter what you look like or where you're from. I have them too. Those bugs amplify when we're in a social setting which we almost constantly are as the social creatures we are. There is this psychological experiment called the Asch Conformity Experiment where three lines are presented of different lengths. Every individual who takes this test and is asked which is the longest or shortest line, answers them correctly. The same test done with a group, where the group says the wrong answer, the individual, KNOWING the right answer, gives the wrong answer, nearly EVERY TIME! I want to take others on a hero's journey so that they can find the hero within, and I am always wresting with how I can best do that knowing the limitations and flaws we have as a species. But I choose to HOPE for a brighter future and do the best I can to be a small piece in building that future. Thank you for making this video and sorry for this long rumbly comment.

Thanks for sharing these wonderful insights! I enjoyed reading it, and I completely agree, especially with the point about being told "what to think, but not how to think." Interesting video. Yes, ancient wisdom can definitely help us to understand the world we live in, life, our purpose in it, how to navigate our existence in this physical plane and beyond in an effective and harmonious way. I have to say though, that trying to reach higher levels of conciousness through the use of drugs is like trying to reach the top of a building by walking around it: you'll always end up at the same spot and dizzy or sick... Hallucinating and experiencing higher levels of conciousness are two different things. There are no shortcuts to spiritual growth...

I am a Catholic so I believe that the world really belong to us, but it doesn't mean that we can do anything with it. I believe nature is like a family, man is the father of nature and the head of it, but, a father is nothing without it's children and wife. Nature is the equal partner of man, representing God's eternal glory.

Confirming the intuitions of ancient philosophers and mystics.. "When forced to summarize the general theory of relativity in one sentence: Time and space and gravitation have no separate existence from matter. ... Physical objects are not in space, but these objects are spatially extended. In this way the concept 'empty space' loses its meaning. ... The particle can only appear as a limited region in space in which the field strength or the energy density are particularly high. ...
The free, unhampered exchange of ideas and scientific conclusions is necessary for the sound development of science, as it is in all spheres of cultural life. ... We must not conceal from ourselves that no improvement in the present depressing situation is possible without a severe struggle; for the handful of those who are really determined to do something is minute in comparison with the mass of the lukewarm and the misguided. ...
Humanity is going to need a substantially new way of thinking if it is to survive!" (Albert Einstein) Our world is in great trouble due to human behaviour founded on myths and customs that are causing the destruction of Nature and climate change. We can now deduce the most simple science theory of reality - the wave structure of matter in space. By understanding how we and everything around us are interconnected in Space we can then deduce solutions to the fundamental problems of human knowledge in physics, philosophy, metaphysics, theology, education, health, evolution and ecology, politics and society. This (Wave Structure of Matter - WSM) is the profound new way of thinking that Einstein realised, that we exist as spatially extended structures of the universe - the discrete and separate body an illusion. This simply confirms the intuitions of the ancient philosophers and mystics.

Given the current censorship in physics / philosophy of science journals (based on the standard model of particle physics / big bang cosmology) the internet is the best hope for getting new knowledge known to the world. But that depends on you, the people who care about science and society, realise the importance of truth and reality. I don't agree with Wade Davis. Yes no one has entirely the absolute o e worldview, but we have core beliefs that are simillar. For example, Love is one of the main driving forces for social cohesion. Another is Faith, we have different religions, some don't have them, but all has something they believe, something they have faith in.

If you take the biblical view of the reason man exists, then his current path is far from the truth. That man was created to care for, and be steward of the earth (God's creation). That man should not see himself "above" nature, but very much part of it. And that he can and should live in a symbiotic relationship with the natural world, protecting it as much as possible, and not exploiting it, for current and future generations. Understanding ALL life is precious and has its place from the ant to the whale to man. That to do so, and not sit on the sideline as spectators will offer a much more rewarding and fulfilling life because we are following our nature and purpose. Which also includes mankind caring for each other, and not simply himself. To understand God is both the greatest scientist, and greatest environmentalist all rolled into One. And that both disciplines are not mutually exclusive.
