I don't know if I have approached things through play but it is actually something I am trying to implement now. But the only reason I chase my dreams is because of my parents, in particular my father. Born in an African village in the 1940s he chose to learn French instead of English like his classmates and went to university in France to study journalism. Not business to make more money. Journalism. He then found his way to writing articles and translating for a bilingual magazine...one day he wrote an article about African brain drain, someone important read that article. That man contacted him and gave him a job. Following his heart led him to getting a job in one of the best European institutions. A job that now people have to do multiple degrees and have years of experience to get. Since he saw how his life turned out he always encouraged us to follow our dreams. That's the only way we persist during the failures.

Let’s say I’ve been working (and playing) on the idea of working as play. I’m an actor and on last November I reproduced Alan Watt’s lecture “Work as play” for 3 nights to bring this subject afloat. We should rethink our way of living.

Throughout my life work and play have interconnected I started as a participant moved into coaching onto ownership into hosting my own television show into game day televised play by play and color analysis the circle of play . Can be very rewarding if one simply allows themselves to simply play. These examples lead to building a company around you guessed it play. I speak all over the world and I see it as nothing more than play I don't live to work...

Very, very nice... I'm a widow in my 70's - that is old by our civilization's standards. I was raised in a fixed mindset enviroment, but I am naturally, I think, attracted to the growth mindset idea. Learn new things. Nothing I can't master if I start at the foundations and build upwards. That conflict has always been paramount inside of my consciousness. Should I just give up on life? Sit down and do nothing? That doesn't feel right to me. Just because I am old by the world's standards, it doesn't mean I am old. My body hurts constantly and I'm trying to change that with diet and exercise For me, my husband was the center of my life. He was my beloved for nearly 5 decades. I feel like I am standing in the ashes my married life, been doing so for 4 very long and challenging years. . I can't seem to go on, but I know I must. But what do I want to do? Is my life nearly over? I could live for another 20 yrs or I could die, tomorrow. Little steps seems to be the best advice. Hardest thing, sometimes, is turning off my own negative voices, the echoes of the adults that surrounded me in my youth.

Hi Kathleen! Do you have children, grand children, something to hold on to? Not daily I suppose. I am 47 and I have an almost 9 years-old daughter. I find that when she is around, most of the time, I just keep on and what I need to do with all my Love for her. She has been away for a week recently and I decided recently too ;) to stop escaping! As in escaping ... my life. This video helps a lot. I'm such a joyful and playful person deep down but I kind of have forgotten! I think crying and laughing are very helpful and actually if we don't cry, how could we laugh, I mean really? So I have decided to face my fears and be in the moment and I am sure very soon I'll see the light. Not that I am completely in the darkness but kind of in my victimhood ... This video reminds me how much I love to dance right when I wake up, sing all the time, juggle. There is something you might try if I may suggest: look into your pain, observe it, be with it fully. Don't let it scare you. Our pain is what it is and it is as well our reaction to it. Let it talk to you, tell you about what you have lived, not your beloved husba,d, just you. I feel for you and think of you dearly. We are all in the same boat whatever our age. Try this "be with it" game and find your soul. Lots of hugs. Maud

I really like this piece. I also think to myself sometimes, 'it could be over anytime' or 'it will end eventually' or 'what's the point?' but our time is now, not forever. If we've decided to keep ourselves alive with sustenance, let's at least try to feel okay as we do so, though it can be difficult. I think the best way not to think about such things is to 'immerse ourselves in the game' and get lost in the story -for the most part.

I'm always delighted to see one of your videos. Truth be told, I think I'm someone with a fixed mindset. I'm trying to change that but it's hard. I grew up in a quite abusive environment in which any kind of failure was grounds for harsh punishment, or a justification for ongoing abuse. Then, as an adult, I went into the workforce where in multiple jobs, one small mistake is enough to get you fired. I know that's all too much information, but my point is that I find it difficult to switch to a growth mindset when my overwhelming experience has been that if you're not good at something right away, then the consequences of any failure, no matter how small, will always be awful.
@ModernIntuitionist8 ай бұрын
It's not too much information. It's the perfect amount! Thank you for sharing your difficult early experiences, it's not easy to share, and I believe when we do, it helps everyone reading to feel less alone. Dr. Carol Dweck's book "Mindset" is really great and offers practical tips for how to develop more of a growth mindset. It's not something that happens overnight, but the benefits are huge. Being okay with failure is, I think, a modern-day superpower. Big love to you and yours my friend!
@leonniceday68075 ай бұрын
I see 2 potential solutions: 1. Reframe the scenarios to not even use the word "failure/failing". For instance, think of it like experimenting, and realize that there are often millions of ways in which the experiment can be changed, and only a few can be successfull. So it's not you "failing", but just you didn't stumble yet on the right shape/combination/way to do it. 2. Reduce the amount of potential loss till acceptable (as mentioned in the video as well). This is a necessary condition for it to feel more like play. Through play, you train the growth mindset and having fun at it. Perhaps (re)start playing some games, at all, like in childhood.: just for the sake of refreshing the mindset...

Some practical take aways for me are: 1. Internalize the locus of control (at least partially). Believe that you can, you can help change your life! 2. Your brain changes and adapts with every experience, you're getting better, even (and especially) after a failure! 3. Each of us (most?) can find at least 10% of our time to dedicate to something creative that trully attracts us, that we always wanted to do. That 10% time is our window of opportunity, and if nothing else, it will make our lives more satisfying/meaningfull. Because, obviously, most of us are not lucky to inherit a fortune or have someone else pay our bills.

I was born a boy in a hole and learned many of these lessons climbing out and it feels like i have lived at least 4 lives, and i am at the beginning of my 5th and most ambitious. It's daunting, scary every time. But you just have to believe in yourself, steady the ship, learn from your mistakes, and accept the outcome as your own. And always get up and try again, even if its something different. Own it, the good and the bad or you just won't grow to your potential. This one thing took all the pressure and anxiety out of it and allowed me to think about problems at a speed I could handle, it utterly transformed my idea of what I was capable of if I can operate under no pressure. As kids, we don't really know what we want, but we know what we are curious about... we then turn that into a hobby, and follow that to, well, wherever it takes us... So the question becomes, 'what are you really, deeply curious about, and if it is multiple things, can you find a way to link them all...' I get that this isn't always the case, but I strongly suspect it is in the vast majority of cases... Just my opinion... P.S. can't wait for the next video ;-)

This is all spot on. I haven't achieved anything on a magnitude comparable to the examples here, but my own life reiterates all these points. I've always been an intensely curious person, ever since I was a kid. This has led me on an academic journey that has changed courses more than once as I follow my curiosity. I recently finished my PhD in biophysics, but my formal education is only about half of my education. I've embraced informal education in the form of books and podcasts etc. I've always viewed my academic journey as more of a spiritual journey than an intellectual one. Since day 1 of college to the day I completed my PhD, I was driven by a desire to understand myself and the world around me. The formal successes along the way were just a small bonus to the real value I was gaining every day. I would have never even completed my bachelors if I were motivated by a desire for success, or status, or money. That's too boring for me and I would not have been able to make the painful grind.

I'm definitely in the man in a hole story of my life lol, went to college for business and racked up a lot of student debt, then realized I didn't want to do anything related to that, funny enough in part to watching office space, and then decided to try becoming a pilot, which significantly added to my debt, and then after years of that without finishing, I developed problems with my eyes and can now no longer fly. So now I'm working 70 hours a week at a low income job living with my parents trying to climb myself out, but I have hope that as long as I keep going, I'll get out.

Thank you Elson this is awesome😃 Many years ago I wrote in a facebook post the second most important lesson anyone can teach there children is to ask, ask, ask. If your children learn this lesson while they still have their innocent inquisitive mind their lives will unfold like a flower. Full of adventure and wonder. It is because we ask, we will truly connect with our intuitions, our feelings and our heart. Then we will have learned the most important lesson of all. Love Always🥰

I am deeply appreciate of your wisdom , your every single word......That human beings are limitless in our capacity for development and there's no telling what we can do or how the world might be transformed if we follow our deepest inclinations. When I look at these figure what comes through most clearly to me is how much fun they're having as they're doing their life's work; how they approach if all with a sense of play. Ask yourself: what is it that feels like to you but look like work to other people? The things that feel like play to you are a huge clue to what you could attain mastering at, and if there's many different things that excite you how can you combine them in your own unique way? Because no one else has precisely the same interests and curiosities that you do...... All of your words are amazing for the one who awaits and studies the nature and function by discovering eyes.

Oh My Elson! You picked a fav movie of mine! Love, love, love Office Space! I quote it weekly at work. My family was talking today about the creativity us kids were aloud to have at our home. My Dad was always adding on to our tiny house. No end to gravel piles, pieces of wood, etc that we could play in or create art with. And - if we made a Lincoln Log village it was aloud to stay on the coffee table for a week! No wonder I stayed under my desk in Kindergarten and just wanted to go home. Thanks for another great "deep thinking" video!!

I think, this can help too with a w-2 job. Recently I rewatched ‘The Martian’. The common thread throughout the film was ‘What is the first problem? Work that problem. Don’t worry about the next one. One thing at a time.’ When you were talking about a life falling into a hole, I could relate. I have been completely overwhelmed about how to reconcile my life into something I could enjoy. I have discovered that I am part flexible and part rigid. Probably why I fell in my hole and been stuck here for quite a while. Play was never really a part of my childhood, so obviously those things I enjoyed the process I did well at. I know I am intelligent but there are parts of my life where I just gave up before I started. Working one problem at a time. Being open to learning new things and being okay with failure is obviously first on the list. Thank you.❤ The master has failed more times than the student.❤

This is what I've unknowingly been doing my whole life, 42 now. I tell people I have a very fullfilling inner life, even tho it may seem like my life sucks from the outside to many. Fun has a bit of a different definition to me than them it seems. They usually dont get it bc they cant go there with me, but I try to bring up pearls from the depths of my mind by making things that I can show people so that i can communicate that to them on some level, albeit a shallow and superficial one. I see the way I approach life and progress as very natural to me, and to not be this way would make life incredibly bland. The way i see it, Yoki was slowly building her own Voltron. I have recently discovered my own Voltron, and am in the process of placing another small bet as I watch this. Just went to the local cop shop and got my fingerprints taken earlier this morning for a form. Its the next logical small step. Thanks for this one, algo (its liiiisteniiing) and Modern Intuitionist. Game on, playa. ...And subscribed.

I've been through this loop (dream, attempt, give up) many times now. I usually succumb to fear of being perceived as a failure, if I continue and then fail, despite knowing and believing that life is a game. I wrote my master thesis on gamification, and got quite far with it. I thought it was just going to be about gamification, but I found links to addiction, flow theory and a lot of spiritual texts, linking flow, play and awareness together. I believe it is possible to activate flow, despite what many others believe, but it won't happen by trying to do it or thinking about how to do it, it'll come when we give up - which is why it seems impossible. Not giving up in general, but letting go of trying and just doing. Some day I'm sure I'll get beyond the fear.. maybe just to find it again further down the road.. rinse and repeat. As long as I tried, I can die without regrets.

Such wonderful words, it's so true. When we approach things with playfulness and joy, those things are so interesting and there's no other way than engagement fully with that, the result of that? It doesn't matter because even if it's not the result that we want, with playfulness, we do miraculous things with whatever. A huge hug from another human being, this life could be absolutely amazing, let the shit become the fruit of your tree life.
