I think both of these examples, particularly the Dipper episode, aren't equating being a man/woman with gender, but rather maturity. A boy who stands up for himself is being a man and a girl who stands up for herself is being a woman, because standing up for yourself is being an adult. That's why Dipper gets his first chest hair at the end of the episode. It's not a sign that he's more traditionally manly, it's a sign that he's growing up.

i think this interpretation also really falls in line with the show, as their childhood (or summer) and not wanting to leave it behind is an underlying theme, especially with mabel in the end and her bubble.

There was something that bugged me about this video but I didn't know what. Now I see that it's the fact he was talking about man and women as gender in stead of maturity which is the interpretation I had every time I watched the show
@Kurotama11
@Kurotama11 4 күн бұрын
@@paocut9018except it’s a bit of both, and I think the point is to draw out that difference. Manly Mannington and the Manotaurs *are* 100% stereotypically expressed men in terms of gender. Dipper sees himself as a wimp, someone who does fit that archetype of a stereotypical “manly” man But that’s not *all* it means to be a man. Part of it, is also how you go about things in the world.
@GameJam230
@GameJam230 Ай бұрын
This message can also be further tied into the theme of Gravity Falls when you realize that "man" and "woman" are typically terms assigned to the adult forms of each respective gender, which is to say that "Becoming an adult is to stand up for yourself and others". Of course, the main theme of Gravity Falls that this connects to being the idea of growing up. It's a theme explored in episodes such as The Inconveniencing and of course Dipper and Mabel vs. The Universe, not to mention the entirety of Mabel's bubble. Convincing Mabel to come out of the bubble to defeat Bill was to say that she should defend that which she cares about and grow up with Dipper, because she wouldn't be able to grow up in there.

I always thought Gravity Falls had such a positive, healthy take on masculinity. It's so important to me for that reason; men deserve to have a healthier model of masculinity to look up to rather than the very toxic (both to others and themselves) kind we're all surrounded with.

@@miadmahshidi8101Yes. They're referring to men like him. Here's the thing though: The only reason Andrew Tate has an audience is because of decades of feminist propaganda defining masculinity as oppressive in the first place. Andrew Tate merely agreed with those beliefs and made them a part of his identity so he can grift increasingly disenfranchised young men. Anyone who complains about "toxicly masculine" male "role models" completely has the problem backwards

Misfits9294 That's the issue saying that masculinity is toxic, when that's not what makes someone toxic it's their behavior & how they treat people with dignity but not being a pushover & giving respect to everyone cause some boys/girls can be jerks it all starts With respecting their Father & mother.

Gravity Falls is, imo, the best thing Disney has made in the past decade. There's so much to dissect, layers upon layers of deep themes that make you stop and self-reflect. There is so much care and thought put into the series from everyone who made it. For me it's among the best of kid's media, right next to shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender. Also it's nice to see JMA branching out into other stuff.

I'm a bit late to the party but I also love that Wendy and the girls, by embracing the masculine stereotypes, break out of the feminine stereotypes being forced on them too. They are supposed to be pure of heart, kind, beautiful, generous, cute, helpful... yet no matter what they do they're never enough. Why strive to reach an impossible goal for acceptance when you can be yourself and be accepted by those around you?

so basically, masculinity and femininity in gravity falls isn't about gender, it's about maturity/confidence. it's not about "man or woman", it's about "boy or man" and "girl or woman"
@qu765

What ive heard that makes a lot of sence to me is: the opposite of a man is not a woman, but a boy. And the opposite of a woman is a girl. To be a man or to be a woman really is about being mature - which a large part is standing for what you believe in.

The main theme of the series is about growing up and becoming a teenager. The series showed us that, either if you are a man or woman, you gotta say no to whatever stereotypes society tries to fit you in and fight for what you believe. It is truly amazing how a show can give us this lesson without directly telling us

The message is of growing up and becoming mature. It’s something I love about Stan too, we may see him act so immature all the time but when it comes down to it he will stand against anything that would seek to harm his family. He stands and fights for what he believes in, his brother and his niece and nephew. He protects his own, and that is another aspect of maturity that can be expressed in both sexes. The aspect can be shared, but it can be how it’s expressed that makes them different and special

I actually really love this show and how it focuses on brotherhood, how intelligence, family first mindsets, and loyalty are more important then being the biggest, beefiest guy in the room. Every man in this show has a nurturing side that is explored somehow, even Wendy's father. The only other show I can think that has no toxic masculinity, a focus on sibling love, and men that love each other unconditionally and will be there for each other through thick and thin is Rise of the TMNT. Not only are there depictions of various kinds of masculinity, from smart, to kind, to easy going, to responsible, but there's also a great look at single fatherhood and depression that's told so subtly. It's worth watching if you love sibling love and stories about families coming together through thick and thin.

When you can watch again a show you used to watch when you were young and figure out those deeper hidden messages in it, it shows how well thought it was. For example as a 2000s french, I grew up with the show "Wakfu' which seems pretty silly and childish at first with epic moments, but when I watched it again years later, I saw many hidden messages in the show which made me try to watch it entirely from a different viewpoint. And that's the same in here with Gravity Falls

Gravity Falls is my favourite show. Somebody I know once told me that they didn’t watch Gravity Falls because it was too awkward, but that is kind of the point. When dealing with uncomfortable topics, it’s bound to be awkward. Because it makes you challenge the things you were previously taught, and forces you to be more open to new ideas. All the best shows, books, and movies do that. And being awkward is part of life. It’s impossible to escape. Awkwardness comes from insecurity, so why not watch a show that teaches you to accept yourself and not follow stereotypes of being “cool” and stuff. This show teaches people that weirdos ARE cool and being able to be different without caring what other people think of you is power.

Strength doesn’t make you a man, but a good man should be strong. It allows him to do more for the people around him, and the surety it’d give him in his ability to act will also give him more confidence to stand firm in his decisions even if alone.

This is super interesting and in my billion rewatches I never noticed the parallels between the two episodes. Gravity Falls is just really excellent at portraying these themes without just speaking it out-loud. It's treated so casually and in a matter-of-fact way that I feel like most shows (children's or otherwise) really struggle with.

Gravity Falls is my favorite show of all time. It is for many reasons like how it’s about family and love, and it’s also how I love that they live in the middle of a forest however, it’s been a while since I’ve seen this show, and I recently looked back to it today because it helps me with coping. Last time I saw it, I realized that I loved the show because it was about personal growth, and I value personal growth the mind and the Spirit, and what they accomplished together , and when I looked back at this show, I saw through a new lens a show that took a part in my life as the motivation to look towards the future while also staying true to yourself. It’s a very realistic show that knows when to take things seriously, and isn’t like other kid shows I think I was 13 or 14 when I saw it for the first time, my brother was watching it downstairs, and I went down there, and happened to see, a scene from my favorite episode of season two, and season one not what he seems, and I loved Mabel heroic act of trust for her what I soon to know great Uncle. ❤️ ever since that i’ve taken a high interest in watching this series and in a hole it is beautifully well done. It has hard farming lessons lessons on being there for your sibling lessons on. not always succeeding at what you want always having to fantasize it when fantasizing it isn’t too bad. Your imagination it doesn’t cost money. 💰. There are even lessons about growing up, and acceptance of your story. I feel that I have a whole new perspective of this show. I feel that it mirrors my own story, and how I would feel when having to look to the future. This show is not just about two twins who go on mystery adventures or journals what is actually about personal growth, and accepting yourself so you can continue your story.

The opposite of masculinity is NOT femininity, but rather boyish immaturity Masculinity and femininity are both a progression of maturities of their respective starts, not wholly counter ideologies There can be actions that can be seen as both masculine AND feminine. Protecting children for example, but they can be shown in different ways. Two instruments can play the same note yet still sound different.

I love gravity falls and I’m so glad you made a video on it, fight fighters and the last mabelcorn are some of my favorite episodes from the whole show. I never really realized how deep it was when I first watched it, but watching this video put into perspective how much thought went into the show.

I think something very important about the message of “Dipper Vs Manliness” is that it’s not just about standing up for what you believe in, and doing what you think is right, it’s about not letting other people define what masculinity is for you. The beginning of this episode defines masculinity to Dipper as chest hair and strength. Two things that have nothing to do with masculinity. However, he begins to feel inadequate because he doesn’t possess those things he’s been told define being a man. Then, of course, he meets the Manotaur and chooses to adapt their version of masculinity because it fits the earlier narrative Dipper was shown. But their version of masculinity is wrong. They’re dumb angry brutes that thrive off of the admiration of the other Manotaurs and shun and outcast people who don’t live up to their standards. They send a dipper to kill the multibear not because he did anything wrong, but just because they see him as a wuss. So standing over the multibear Dipper makes the decision that if being masculine means being dumb and angry and brutish and mean, then he doesn’t want to be masculine. Making the right choice and turns down the Manotaurs and refuses to do what they ask and they outcast him. But the part of the episode that matters the most is when Dipper comes back and tells Stan what he did he supports it. Earlier in the episode, Stan mocked Dipper for his lack of masculinity and it hurt Dipper because looks up to Stan as being one of the manliest men he knows so when he confirms that Dipper’s choice was the masculine choice and that what he did was good it matters.
