I like the introduction, too often is the Roman heritage of the Empire rejected or ignored, both by Greeks and Westerners, for their own propaganda purposes. The (Eastern) Roman Empire of this period was a wonderful mixture of Greek and Roman cultures, politics, way of life that led to the development of one of the most interesting civilizations of the Middle Ages/late Antiquity. We Greeks should be proud to have been the true last standing parts and peoples of this (about) 2000 years old Empire, instead of rejecting it.

At 1:11, 611. Phokas usurped the crown starting a massive war with Persia (Khosrau has been friends with the previous emperor, Mauricius). 1:14, 628. Yes! Heraclius saved the day! Did someone order a new religion? Oh, Heraclius, you would be remembered as the greatest if you hadn't lost so quickly to Islamic invasions. 1:18, 646. It's not like the Eastern Mediterranean and Egypt were providing huge amounts of wealth, right? At least, Carthage is still there! 1:28, 698. It's impressive they kept Carthage that lack, but it's gone now. (sad noises for a while) 2:02, 871-876. Retake Bari, a small emirate in Italy. 2:12. 913-927. War with Bulgarians. Ow. 2:20, 963-969. Nikephoros II. Take back the east! Got murdered by his nephew, who still did okay. 2:24, 976-1025. BASIL II THE BULGARSLAYER!! Bam! Armenia. Boom! All the way to the Danube! Even the Croatians pay tribute! 2:42, 1071. Battle of Manzikert. Ow, just ow. 2:45, 1081. Start of Kommenid Dynasty. (Not great at first, but it gets some of Anatolia back) 2:48, 1096. First Crusade. 3:05, 1185. Bulgaria's back. 3:10, 1203. What are you doing Fourth Crusade? What Alexios IV promised you riches for toppling his relatives? Oh sure, just take everything. 3:22, 1261. Michael VIII retakes Constantinople. Time to reboot. 3:31, 1302. Battle of Bapheus. Most of Anatolia lost again. 3:34, 1321-1328, 41-47, 52-57. Multiple civil wars. 1453. The end.

The Byzantine Empire lost slowly Sardinia after the Arab conquest of Sicily which made communication between Cagliari and Constantinople impossible. The Byzantine governors became autonomous and gave rise to the "Giudicati", independent principalities that lasted until the 13th century when they were conquered by the maritime Republic of Pisa. The last Byzantine possession in Italy was Bari, conquered by the Normans in 1071.

I think that during Alexios I, Ioannes II and Manuel I, all the land that is now Croatia, Bosnia& Herzegovina, Slovenia, Serbia and Kosovo were Byzantine provinces. Also, at Ioannes' and Manuel's ages all the south Asia minor for Cilicia to Antioch were Byzantine provinces. There are also some mistakes...

Reading the comments that blame Serbia or Bulgaria for the fall of the empire, I think it is important to clarify: in the 14th century the Byzantines fought among themselves and one of the groups called the Ottomans [as allies] to fight on European territory, very clever...

From what I know of history, The Western Roman Empire (in the 5th century) was like a a bad player playing the game on hard mode. The Eastern Roman Empire for most of its life seemed like a relatively good player, playing the game on nightmare mode.

France actually holds the rights to the throne and crown of the Roman/Byzantine empire, since it was sold to the French king in 1496 by Andreas Palaiologos, successor of Konstantinos palaiologos, the last Byzantine emperor.

Justinian is the greatest Leader in Eastern Roman History. He managed to Conquer The Vandals, (Northern Libya, Tunisia, Northeast Algeria) Italy from the Ostrogoths, But sadly, everybody dies. Thats when it all went downhill. :P
@andreasb.16067 жыл бұрын
I am not saying this in any negative tone, but his conquests cost the empire vast resources and seriously reduced Roman presence in the East, which led to deadly, bloody and indecisive wars with the Persians and the eventual conquest of the Middle East (both Roman and Persian) by first the Arab tribes and later Turkish tribes. While his conquests can be considered great, in the long run, in my opinion they proved more of a costly disadvantage for the territorial integrity of the Empire.
@rockstar4502 жыл бұрын
@@andreasb.1606 the view that Justinian bankrupted the empire is falling heavily out of favour. The plague is what crippled the trade and military which could have easily held the conquest up. There are also massive climactic shifts which created famine. Justinian’s civil administration shows he wasn’t just a conquerer. I used to question the reconquest but read into the aforementioned reasons. The Italian holdings kept them connected and trading with the west. It was the Arabs. Plain and simple, and the conquest of Persia shows nobody saw that coming/
