We always laugh about the holy roman empire not being anything of what their name suggest, but what the hell were the russians thinking by claiming the title of third rome
@denissokolov1990
@denissokolov1990 3 жыл бұрын
@@youneskasdi Like, several reasons. 1. Russia claimed the title of "Thrid Rome" mostly for the religious reasons, not political, this is why they never took the name officialy, unlike HRE. 2. Vasiliy's son got married to the niece of last Byzantium Emperor, Constantin the 11th, thus making Rurik and Palaeologus dynaties to be raltives. 3. They simply wanted to poke Emperor, by saying something like "look, we are equals to you, you claim to inheret West, we claim to inheret East of Rome. Btw, poits 2 and 3 are also the reasons why Russia has eagle with two heads as their coat of arms.

The strategy of Ottomans, on the other hand, should be greatly appreciated: Instead of conquering the city (which was extremely well protected by high wall and seawater) directly, Ottomans had purposely occupied most of the original territories of the Empire first and the Empire thus became much weaker before the final war in 1453. Since the Empire had lost control of most trade routes in Argean Sea either, the 'Romans' eventually lacked any financial and material supports outside the city during the time of siege. The victory of Ottomans was then just a matter of time.

The Hungarians also had a pretty panicked reaction as due to their proximity they now (correctly) predicted themselves next on the Ottoman chopping block. That said, they'd already been panicking about the Ottomans for several decades at this point so it wasn't exactly anything new.

I believe it's important to note that the fall of Constantinople also contributed to Spain and other European countries being more interested in alternate trade routes, because going through Constantinople was a major trading route and the Ottomans taking Constantinople shut down that trading route or restricted it a lot. This helped to convince Spain about 100-150 years later to go along with Columbus's suggestion of sailing west. I think it's important to also note based on this video that Columbus was also from Genoa. Given he grew up there I'm sure he was exposed to the negative reactions of Constantinople's fall and the economic impact that had on Genoa.

@Eric Rogers that's a bit too broad of a statement. I mean, the Western Roman Empire was the lesser half for basically the 4th and 5th centuries, and even after the 476 fall of Rome the "Byzantines" did not experience a drastic change. Sure, they slowly evolved into something different than the 2nd century romans, but even then, the roman empire wasn't culturally stable for it's entire existence either. Also, you need to remember that for it's entire existence as a massive empire, Rome was half Latin and half Greek, so it's hard to pinpoint what "Romanised" really even means.

Actually the lack of reaction from many Catholic states could be attributed to the defeat of Crusade against the Ottomans just a decade prior to the fall of the City, in which Poland, Hungary, HRE took part. Catholic alliance of potentially interested major powers was soundly beaten and one of the strategic goals of the coalition was hampering of Ottoman expansion towards Byzantines. Once the Crusade of Varna failed, Constantinopole was pretty much lost, it just took 10 years to die.

This does undersell what happened in England, as Henry VI slid into a catatonic state a few weeks later and was declared insane and unable to rule, thus setting the stage for the War of the Roses. There's speculation that the one-two punch of the fall of Constantinople (29 May) and the final defeat (for the English) of the Hundred Years War at Castillon (17 July) both contributed to Henry's slide into madness in August.

I live at the point where Constantinople was conquered (Ayvansaray). My house is just below the Roman Empire Palace. I get very emotional when I think of the war and conquest that took place here. When the municipality excavates any street here, the bones of people who fought in that period are still revealed. Right next to us, a 100-year-old house was destroyed and a Byzantine tomb was found under it. We live on a very large and rich history. @@Admiral45-10 Poland was, in fact, pretty popular among Russian nobility by the end of the Rurikid dynasty, and when the end finally happened, the hopes were high that Russia would have a Polish Czar, and would join the Commonwealth as the third constituent party. On one condition though - the new Russian Czar must adopt the Orthodox faith. But the Poles screwed the pooch on that one (along with engaging in other unpopular activities like Lisowczycy raids, and the Poles' general attitude towards what they called "Muscovy" as a territory to be conquered and colonized). So the anti-Polish boyar faction eventually prevailed, and that's how we got Messrs Minin and Pożarski, Susanin, and the Romanov dynasty. BTW, a certain minor German princess didn't make the same mistake some time later, became a Romanov empress, and look how well that turned out for Poland…

That’s a great topic, but your video has a couple inaccuracies 1) It wasn’t like the Italians or even Europe only knew about the situation after the city had already fallen. They were aware of the siege, but for the most part had faith in the famous walls that had defeated so many invaders. Since they were unaware of the Ottoman canons, they thought it was just another failed siege. And the Italians, include the Pope himself even sent a couple soldiers to help the Byzantines. 2) When the city eventually fell, it wasn’t ignored by Europe. At least by all of it. King Afonso V of Portugal gathered a large army and was ready to lead the crusade, but had to cancel his plans since no other major power joined and he was in the opposite part of the continent. So at least Portugal *did* react, it simply hadn’t the means to do anything alone. The Europeans were confident in the mythic Walls of Constantinople. The use of canons was something relatively new to them. They only full understood the danger of the Ottomans when Constantinople fell, and nothing could be done.

And this is why the video IS WRONG - there was other reaction in Europe but since nobody care about the European countires which didnt speak French, English or German nobody bothered to look up for what their thouht. Just a few quick example: -Kingdom of Hungary (where the king had the second biggest income only overshadowed by the King of French at the time) all of a sudden stopped the almost 50 year long civil war between the Pro-Habsburg and Pro-Jagello faction, strated to strenghten the border fortress system in the southern border and started a military campaign against the Ottomans (which culminated in the Battle of Krusevac in late 1454 and aimed to push the Ottomans out of Serbia and create a safe route of communication between Hungary and Albania) -Bohemia and Poland also supported Hungary in these Anti-Ottoman endeavors both financially and with raw manpower, so their acted too - just more indirectly. -Portugal de-facto started the whole "explore the unknown regions and hopefully get India with a boat" endeavor because of the Fall of Constantinople. But all of this is not fit into the western-europe centric historical revisionism, i know, i know. We are just useful idiots who didnt do anything until the Horde come for us and beg the West to save us in the region all the time - its not like we fight against the Horde to from the getgo or anything while the "enlightened" West have the luxury of ignoring everything happening in the world. Being the Bulwark of Christendom is really a undervalued and ungrateful thing... Hundreds of Millins died to protect Europe didnt even make it into the side note and counted as "everyone had more pressing issues" or "just didnt cared". The Ottoman issue WAS the main issue since the second half of the 14th century till early 18th century in the Kingdom of Hungary - just saying.

Well, it should've added that Balkan rulers from Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Wallachia, Moldova, Albania and Latin principalities in Greece were horrified, since they truly were next. Also Hungary, as one of the leading European powers, was scared that they'll have to face Ottoman invasion alone. And indeed, Balkan was fully conquered by the end of the XV century, while Hungary lost its independence to the Turks by the second half of the XVI century. Thus, when in Western Europe XV and XVI century mark the beginning of renesance and new bright age, for people of Balkans and central Europe XV and XVI centuries mark the beginning of centuries long Ottoman occupation and (both metaphorical and real) slavery!

Second, if you insist to you use it, the "Dark Ages" lasted longer in the East than in the West, simply because most of all invasions to Europe came from Asia (with the exception of the Almohads.) West Europe is an extremely protected position. The East is not, so it took many centuries more to stabilize. France was prospering while it supported Ottoman rule which put the Balkans back hundreds of years. You cannot even compare the two situations

Ivan III (who ruled after the blind prince in the video) later married a Byzantine princess, Sophia Palaiologina, who brought with her the court ceremonies of Byzantium. Ivan styled himself "tsar" (caesar) and adopted the symbol of the Orthodox Roman Empire, the double headed eagle, which is still used in Russia and many nations whose territory was once controlled by Byzantium, and which symbolized the symphonia, or harmony of Church and Empire. The idea had developed during the first 500 years of Christianity that God had providentially made the Roman Empire His chosen vessel for bringing the world into the Church, and so the idea of an Orthodox Imperium became very important in Eastern Orthodox thinking. Thus Russia became the continuation of Rome's legacy as an Orthodox imperium.

@@JustGeridan It's just that basically every major European power saw themselves as the successor to Rome, including Italy, Russia, Austria, Germany, France, Turkey and (Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece). Austria and Germany had a Kaiser, the modern Form of the Caesar. Anyway, it made almost everyone's claim kinda ridiculous and the only Empire where it really mattered wasItaly, since that was their excuse to grab more territory. The other European nations just saw themselves as the protector of Christians and the faith
@JustGeridan
@JustGeridan 4 жыл бұрын
@@blueangel4ever370 of course, even America has pretensions of being "Roman", just look at the architecture in DC. I think the difference with Russia is 1. Continuity of faith, as an Orthodox empire, and 2. The passing down of the court rituals and Byzantine forms of government in Ivan's court and legal codes. Those other nations, like the HRE, might have laid claim to be the successors of the Roman Empire, but were their governments really reflective of it? I think it's a pretty easy case to demonstrate that the way Russia operated as an empire is the most similar to how Rome was post-Constantine. The key distinction is the view Russia (and Byzantium) had for themselves in history: as God's kingdom on Earth, protectors of the Church. In the West, there was a similar idea in Charlemagne's "Christendom" but it was wrapped up in the Papacy, and the Popes became greater in temporal power and authority than the Holy Roman Emperors. In the East, the Church remained in the spiritual realm, while emperors remained the highest temporal authority.

@@JustGeridan Well, there is a difference between the eastern and western roman empire. I think the "protector of the faith" part in the English monarchy should be scratched, this title was awarded when England was catholic. I think you can look at different factors, historically, France and Italy were the last countries with a real claim, since the Ottomans granted the protection of the Christians in their empire to the French and well... Italy is just a top candidate for the succession because of the pope, Rome, etc. I actually don't think the Russians are the closest, they explicitly separated their church from the eastern Roman empire and never wanted to become similar to Greece, they have no geographically claims at all, not even a remotely similar language, and the symbols were used by many nations, including Austria

Heresy usually meant schism, but the schism between Catholic and Orthodox Church was unique in that it was first solely a question on authority. There did not really exist a real schism until it began to be solidified with the failure of Council of Florence, fall of Constantinople and Russian opposition to healing of the schism. Even then it was not so clear cut, the eventual schism we know of today is a long historical process. @@Daedalus_9 Orthodox still hold to Papal Primacy, and essence energy distinction is not a ground for heresy, similar thought is found in Franciscan Theology. To not forget about Eastern Catholic Churches who venerate St. Palamas as a Saint and still mainly hold to his theology. The differences are mainly in the nature of papal authority, filioque, immaculate conception and purgatory. Emphasis on "nature of", since Easter Catholic Churches has no problem accepting these in view of their own theology that differ from the Latin thoughts of St. Augustine and St. Aquinas.

Maybe I missed it but if I didn’t, you forgot the most important thing. The fall of Constantinople is considered the end of the medieval period. The city's fall also stood as a turning point in military history. Since ancient times, cities and castles had depended upon ramparts and walls to repel invaders. The Walls of Constantinople, especially the Theodosian Walls, were some of the most advanced defensive systems in the world at the time. These fortifications were overcome with the use of gunpowder, specifically in the form of large cannons and bombards, heralding a change in siege warfare. Countries understood with fear walls won’t protect them. That is the most important result of the fall.

It's crazy how Rome was at the center of every major european events, even at their fall. The fall of the ERE (or byzantium as called by those people in the HRE) sparked the exploration and colonization of the entire world.

Good ol' days. Also, 1:16 "Rome and Constantinople were making great strides in fixing their schism" is total Ottoman horse shit, the schism was only getting exponentially worse, and many Byzantine christians grew fond of me for providing them with maximum protection under Ottoman rule against their catholic counterparts, who went as far as executing an entire crusade against them in the past.
