I grew up with Killing Time, Escape From Monster Manor, Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, Braindead 13, PO'ed, and Rise of the Robots. Those were my favorite games. Then my dad bought a Playstation and let's just say I can't stop seeing my parents playing Diablo any time soon.

***** The 3DO had a 3 year lifespan. From October 1993 till late 1996. Capcom did a fairly perfect port of Super Street fighter 2 turbo (with amazing CD quality sound) for the 3DO. There was even a special capcom branded controller for it.

Nice video, The 3DO was my favourite console from the 90's - so many good games!! On another note, I can't believe that I missed the 3DO Blaster - what a fantastic piece of kit.

I loved my 3DO. I purchased it at a pawn shop near the end of it's life cycle, and stores in the mall had tons of games in bargain bins with huge discounts. I'm pretty sure I owned more games for that system than I did any other system. Although dated now, I personally loved all of the interactive video content. It is what made the system so different from the other systems of it's time. I have owned all of the mainstream systems dating to the NES, and I get the most nostalgia from 3DO.

There is one slight inaccuracy; The 3DO wasn't the most expensive console ever made. The Pioneer LaserActive was released a couple of months earlier and cost a whopping $970 dollars ($1,601.93 in 2015 dollars). But it flopped even harder than the 3DO.

I admit that at first I knew what I was going to comment before I watched the video. I was going to say that the 3do was nice but the price and the only launching title crash n burn would of left me as an angry customer. Hearing the hype and then beating the only game twice would led me to think I just bought an over priced cd player. Your comparison of out of this world quickly changed my mind. I loved that game on snes and seeing the beautiful finish the 3do gave it and sound. It blew me away. I doubt I'll ever be able to find and collect 3do in the near future. I tell myself that I can just watch play thru but we all know that's never the same. Anyways thank you for this video!

I bought an FZ-10 brand new in 1998 for $90 mostly to play audio CDs. Since the games were on clearance between $5-$10 I figured why not buy some? Well about $200 later I walked out with a new system and depleted the remainder of Best Buy's stock of 3do games. Great review and I really enjoyed playing Killing Time as well.

I've recently become interested in the 3DO, as I never owned one back in the day. I had the PlayStation and N64. I've seen some well-done retrospective videos on this system on other channels, but this is by FAR the most comprehensive look at this console. Very well done, and excellent for those with very basic knowledge about the 3DO.

From what I read in an Edge magazine article, originally the 3DO would be upgraded to the M2 through the expansion box shown in the video. But it was decided that the M2 would be better with a 4x speed CD rom drive, which ruled out the possiblity of the 3DO upgrading to the M2. When 3DO announced this just before the PS1's launch, people stopped buying the 3DO as they were not prepared to pay $320 (for the cheapest Goldstar model) for a console that was going to be replaced the following year.

Hi! I really like your video. I had no idea it was this powerful in the time it was released, and the comparison of Flashback was mindblowing. Whenever I heard of the 3DO, I only thought of Plumber Don't Wear Ties, but now this really changed the way I think about this console. If there had been better support, this could have changed the course of videogames, maybe one whole generation ahead! Thanks!

The high price tag made the 3DO nearly unattainable for most gamers, unless they were well off or saved their money for a rather lengthy period of time. By the time that 3DO prices came down, Sony's PlayStation console had taken the video gaming world by storm, retailing at less than half of what 3DO had originally cost to buy initially. Big-time video game publishers like Konami and Capcom were never interested in doing any research and development for the console, and even with the strength of Electronic Arts behind it, the 3DO died a quick and fairly unnoticeable death about two years after its release

We still have our Panasonic top loader. Bought it back in 1996 unknowingly it was on the way out because 3 months later I found out. I was bummed but managed to get a bunch of games super cheap.I never even heard of 3DO at the time but decided to take a chance and get it because of the built in memory. At the time it was about the same price as the PS1. It`s all sitting in the closet now but still works. I thought about getting rid of it in a yard sale but changed my mind.

24:21 That's the same sound effects used for horse character "Montaro" in MK 3 and Ultimate MK 3, interesting. Also to note, I begged and begged my parents back in the mid 90's for a 3DO but that price tag along with 50/60 dollar games just didn't fly.

I like your videos, I subscribed, and i will continue to watch more -- but this video on the 3DO does get some things wrong. I'm not going to complain about the details, but this review really seems like it comes from someone that didn't buy it when it was initially available. There are things you bring up, that weren't really factors at that time. But i still like your work, and i wish I had a store like yours to work/own. And i have a lot of envy for those 3DO systems you have - they look brand new, no dust or dirt anywhere! I wish my two 3DOs looked that good today! I'm sure you have a lot of knowledge on games that i don't, but its hard to know everything about some of these consoles unless you had one back in the day. Keep up the good work, i really do respect it. Not many people even know the 3DO was out there, so it always nice to see videos about it.

I got my First 3DO in early 1994. (I was 21 years old back then) I found a used one for $400. It was a pretty good deal at the time. (considering it's retail price was still $700. Great video. I hope 3DO games source code were released in order to port to other consoles and do know its catalogue because a 3do today is very hard to find. I remember in 1994 a school friend invited me to his home to show me he was borrowed a 3do by a friend of him whose parents earned very well. That friend has lots of expensive things and this console it was a Panasonic F1 and It was a rare console even at that time, we both had Sega MegaDrive and that new thing was unreachable for us. When I was younger a deparment store called leachmere that was in a mall that was near where I used to live used to have a playable 3do that usually had full games & not demos to play/ Anyway my mother used to go shopping & I would spend hours playing games on the 3do. My favorite games that I would play on the 3do in the store where called crash & burn, need for speed, & I think road rash. It was a blast to play in which I wish that I had owned one, but the price for it was out of the question

Wow this video really took me back to early 90s and the fun times playing this system....I'd purchased the first version of 'R.E.A.L.' 3DO(FZ-1) in '94, for over 700.00....yes it was very expensive....but Crash 'n' burn, Killing Time, Escape from Monster Manor, Gex, Samurai Shodown, Myst, Return Fire, Demolition Man were all just great, pure wonder and I loved the graphics-colorful and quite detailed for the time-the Full motion video in Killing Time really stands out....Loved your video, thanks for going into painstaking detail about 3DO. My regret is selling it to a kid in the neighborhood and using that money to buy a PS. I think I will have to find a used one and collect these games again....thanks for reminding me how much fun this system was and also talking about the other add-ons to the system, history and the reason the company went under.

Low licensing fees is a double edged sword. Either the 3DO could have received its own Tomb Raider or it could have received even more games like Plumbers Don't Wear Ties, which could have still hurt the system's reputation further. Also, consider the fact that three companies were licensed to create the consoles, and it would seem reasonable to assume that if the system became successful more companies would be contracted to create more consoles.
@dgray5100able
@dgray5100able 11 жыл бұрын
Well keep in mind I'm not here to hate on the console, as it doesn't deserve it as much as it tends to get. Also this might be quite long and feel free to correct any mistakes I make. Now, it only cost a few dollars in licensing fees to make a game for the 3DO. However, the system did suffer from the Wii Syndrome, where a console has several good titles but suffers from a bad reputation because of the amount of shovelware and badly made games it has in its library.

The Jaguar did bad in part because it was really difficult to program for the Tom and Jerry 3D graphics cpus. It had a Motorola 68000, as a 'controller' but many companies just ported Amiga games over to work on this processor and ignored the other ones. It was cheaper this way. Some truly awful games were released for Jaguar like Trevor McFur.

That was very interesting. Because I never heard much about this console, never seen it and only watched videos of FMV games which I don't like, I never consider it good. But seeing more of the history, the games, I reconsider about getting one and try some. I remember playing the Another World 20th aniversary that had more detailed background and thought it was the first time. But I was impressed they did it already on 3DO and the sound is amazing too. Wow! Also, Alone in the Dark one of my favorites on PC. I really want to explore this system now.

I was fed up trying to find games for my old consoles, PS1, Saturn, to realize I have to mod the console :P p.s. I am curious why Doom was so slow in 3DO. My guess is it was a fast port of it's software renderer and not using the GPU. But the GPU of 3DO reminds me of Saturn, it's just a rasterizer of quads (but now with more features than saturn, like gouraud shading and blending). Maybe converting the column rendering of Doom to utilize the quad rasterizer of 3DO needed more work and that's why it was not good in either 3DO or Saturn. However I have seen the latest 3DO games and I know the machine was powerful. If they make much better version of Quake on Saturn (with proper good programming and use of the GPU) then they could do better stuff on 3DO too. Sorry, technical discussion :)

Optimus6128 LOL, you lost me at "rasterizer of quads" LOL. I have to admint that I'm not that tech/spec savvy. :) But I agree, it could have been better.

Great video and while it's very late, you should consider Project Firestart, from Dynamix, for the C64 the first true survival horror game.

Interesting. I have never played it. I'm looking into it now. Does it follow the survival horror rules of limited health and ammo? Of course the topic itself is subjective. We may all define and categorize what we consider the first survival horror game to be a little differently, but I would totally be willing to change my opinion on the matter if it fits my definition. Well, I'm excited to try it out. Sadly, I do not have a C64 to play it on. I will absolutely give it a shot eventually though. Looks like exactly my kind of game no matter what the genre. LOL Thanks for the heads up!!

interesting knowledge about the 5 disc variant but technically some models the goldstar ones as a example actually did have copyright protection.

As far as I know, none of the 3DO consoles have copy protection at all, Though some tolerances to certain CDR's may be a factor.

***** know i read about it someplace, may of just been some of the later models. Supposeably its encryption has been cracked though sometime recently Defiantely has a bit of region protection. If you own one of the Goldstars give it a shot, burn a game of its region and attempt to play it and see what happens.

patg108 I have a burned copy of Lucienne's Quest. As I recall, I've played it on my goldstar. But to be sure, I'll try it again. I did look for information on this and some people say that there are some types of CDRs that don't play on the 3DO consoles. I couldn't find anything definitive though. There's no region lock out on any of the 3DO models, but a few Japanese games cannot be played U.S. 3DO consoles due to a special kanji font which English language consoles can't read. Sword and Sorcery (The Japanese version of Lucienne's quest) for example, will not play on A U.S. 3DO for that reason. But most Japanese games will play on any 3DO console :)

***** Also would be a good idea to try it on any non panasonic 3DO models you own of that region, would be more conclusive. Is there a listing of models? wouldn't truely be able to tell unless each was tested individually 1 by 1.

I have the goldstar, the FZ-1 and the FZ-10. I'll try it on each and see what happens. As I look more and more, I'm seeing that it should work on all of them. but the actual test will of course be to try it out.

while i can't speak for Sam Sho, I can assure you Super Turbo was not arcade perfect. alot of animation frames are missing and relpaced with recycled frames, CPS1 chains are possible for some odd reason but the biggest problem with the port is that the hidden "Super" versions for the whole cast are missing. Otherwise, I really enjoyed your video. great stuff!

Kinda sad the M2 never came out. I get insane nostalgia thinking about old EGM and gamepros with everyone talking about how the M2 could possibly come out and take out the 64. The technology, like the 3DO, would have been very ahead of its time. Sadly, they waited far too long.

@L1Games well it was the best home port simply because it was the ONLY home port. The omissions that the3DO suffered from would even qualify for "virtually arcade perfect" either. Add to that, the default 3DO controller was simply not suited for the, which surprised me you made no mention of the bizzarely designed yet awesome 6 button controller capcom designed for the game. If you plan to do more vids of this caliber, PLEASE do one for Dreamcast soon!!!

The games console industry is different from other markets, like televisions or radios, because platforms are competing with other platforms, something that generally occurs with competing media formats. If the 3DO had paired up exclusively with Panasonic and adopted a model closer to that of Sony and the Playstation, it might have done better.
