Bedards stat lines are insane for this season if he can transition his game from the whl to the nhl I believe we will see a 160 + point season eventually. In my opinion 92 goals will never be done again since the implemented the gretzky rule things changed 70 is the new 90 I dont think anyone can get 90 without them taking the rule out.

There is nothing more poetic than Ovechkin scored arguably the greatest goal of his career in his rookie year with kid Auston Matthews in the stands watching him live and Wayne Gretzky coaching his opponent. The fact that all three of them from three different generations were all there at the same time is one of the most poetic "coincidences" in the game... The only thing I was confused about is that I thought the NHL was formed because they hated the owner from Toronto and they couldn't kick him out so they found their own league. The WW stuff was more applicable to talent and other parts. But I haven't looked into it as much as you so not doubting or anything. Thanks for the vid!

You mentioned that the NHA broke up because of WWI, but that's not really why. The main reason the NHL was formed was to get rid of Eddie Livingstone, the owner of the Toronto Blueshirts.

Love the Goldeneye music thrown in there. I think Matthews and McDavid are most likely the next guys to try and break the scoring record if they can stay healthy and avoid suspensions. Otherwise, Ovechkin may have the record for a couple decades if he manages to surpass Gretzky.

I really like Matthew's don't get me wrong. And I think the league is trending in a direction that will be beneficial to his style. But can we please pump the brakes a bit. You've already mentioned his time missed early on. Everyone gets caught up with 60 that we forget last year was the first time he even touched 50. Last year was also the first time he managed more than 80 points on a season. I know this is a goal scoring video but that's worth mentioning I believe. I really hope he maintains his health and scoring ability and who knows, maybe in another 10 years or so we can have the "Will Matthew's pass Ovechkins record" conversation. Either way I love where the league is heading. Fast pace, goals left and right. Really fun to watch having grown up in the dead puck era myself.

Ovi does have a shot, but with the type of game he plays (I mean the physicality), I have a hard time seeing him make it to 40 or more and still playing in the league at a high enough level to put up enough goals to beat the record. Wear and tear always start to hit you more each year as you close in on 40 (trust me on this one), so I foresee a drop off in his goal production the next few years by quite a bit. I would be shocked if he was still hitting 20 goals or more when over 40 given how good he is, but I like I said, one bad hit and he may be done in the league. As I side note, I will say I was lucky enough to see Ovi's over the head goal against my Yotes live and it is still the most amazing play I have ever seen. I still remember everyone in the arena trying to figure out what the hell happened and then when we watched the replay, even the Yotes fans were cheering that one.

The idea that Matthews is a threat to any of these records is pretty funny, he dropped to 40 goals again this season. Other than his anomalous 60 last season, he hasn't topped 47 and has averaged 42.7.

wayne was a great player but only once after he left edmonton did he hit 50 he played 1487 games, ovechkin will take about the exact same amount to tie him. he is still a beast and not slowing down. signed a 5 year contract, there is the law of diminishing returns, barring serious injury he will break it

i remember when people wee talking about jagr having a chance. then he hit a wall going from over 50 a year to well under 30 and this year while early looks to be that wall for ovi. hes -6 with 2 goals, leads in shots and 3rd overall in ice time these arnt positive stats. hes goana burn out. the only thing to save his chances is with this bloated league of 32 teams will give him more then enough games against mickey mouse teams to pad his stats a bit, like vancouver.

I just can't ignore the sad state of goaltending back in the early days of the NHA/NHL. Not trying to throw shade at the greats like Howe, but man, goaltenders were just placeholders. I understand they didn't want to drop down on their knees because of the lack of a face mask, but it definitely shows why goals were so easy. I'll go out on a limb and say half the goals scored wouldn't have occurred with current goalies.

Mathews is a lazy player so he won't be setting any records and i see his career coming to an end sooner than most superstars.A lot of these stars also were aided by very good linemates but never given credit as such,Gretzky's linemates were insane VERY good top level players including others whom he got on the powerplay.Two stars lemieux and Gretzky BOTH had Paul Coffey a superstar Defenseman with amazing speed and ability to go end to end.It so happens th enon skilled Esposito also scored his abundance of 76 aided by another superstar D man in Bobby Orr.My point is that your top D man makes a huge difference your not setting records w/o that sueprstar D man that can rush it end to end. Many also forget the great Mike Bossy he had another legend in Dennis Potvin back on the blueline the many cups won by the habs aided by Robinson and Savard.
