It’s funny but also depressing when you go back and play the retro games from the 80s/90s and they have events in far away sci-fi future of the millennium and think there is space travel and hovercrafts and aliens, in reality basically nothing has changed.

I first discovered this via a Colecovision emulator in the mid-90s and had no clue it was an arcade game (I was barely four when it first came out!) However, learning its arcade origins, finally getting to play it on MAME (and later purchasing the XBOX 360 official release) I confirmed what I liked in the Coleco version was true to form. I also didn't know that there was a Gyruss connection! I had a love of Gyruss via Showbiz Pizza and the NES conversion, and now it makes sense that is why I felt an affinity for TIme Pilot discovering it so much later. Thanks for the schooling, Pat!

I have this on my Switch. It’s been a favorite since I first saw it way back in 1982! It’s another one of those games that’s more complex than it first appears. But mostly what I loved about it as a kid was how many bullets you fire! You know with Galaga and other games like that you fired one or two shots at a time. But Time Pilot was one of the first games where it felt like you had a firehose for a gun. Made it so much more fun!

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries likewise. I was barely able to pull off a stunt on my birthday in 1987, or possibly 1988, when I got my first NES for $80+tax. and I did some underhanded stuff to achieve my goal as I handed out invitations to my Birthday party and mentioned on the card to please not buy me a gift (usually costing approx $10) but add $10 to my goal (NES) thereby I bought it that day and I cannot express how much flack I caught from other kids mothers saying how I "shouldn't make a business out of my birthday party" Which I get, yet, who wants a bunch of $10 presents when if you combine the total and "unite the funds like Voltron" can play NES till your dead. Then I'm willing to get spoken negatively about. The Vectrex tho, it looked so cool to me in the first half of the 1980s, and I considered it far superior to any other console of that time. IMO. I wish they had an emulator available. I own a "Retron 5" which is great regarding the diversity of consoles and cartridges it handles. I would like to buy a Vectrex.....if I knew that the console was like a Retron 5 in mint condition and I had access to the games or carts. My greatest fear regarding buying a Vectrex is the controllers having been damaged and worn down. I am sorta shocked as to how IMO under-appreciated the Vectrex was. Peace!

This game wasn't as popular as I thought it was. It's probably one of my favorite arcade shooters of all time.

14:58 That X6800 version almost makes me nauseous! It's cool that it has a parallax thing with multiple levels of clouds. And it's kinda cool that they gave it a little depth by making the vertical axis scroll more slowly, but I think the developer was lazy and the X axis is always moving the same speed whether you're going left/right or diagonally. You have 16 directions you can travel in, so it just needs some hardcoded math for how many pixels each axis travels at +/- 0°, 22.5°, 45°, 67.5°, 90°, but they seem to have taken some shortcuts. It's just one of those things that fascinates me, like "How did they f* that up like that?" but I can't look at it anymore it's giving me a headache. 😂

I love this game, I played it on my MSX at the time. But seeing a B-25 and a B-52 in those small sprites is quite a stretch of imagination.

I think it's worth mentioning that although the Vectrex had a built-in CRT, it was not a CRT capable of displaying images like most people today would think. A vector display was more like an oscilloscope capable of drawing lines, but not pixels as such. Battlezone and Star Wars are good example of this technology used well. You could get smooth first person 3D animation during an era when this was not possible using conventional pixel tech.

So we have the same all time favorites for shoot'em'ups :-) Galaga and Time Pilot. Maybe you should have a look at "Eyes" - I totally got hooked when I discovered this rarely known arcade gem last year.

Quick note: The first parachutist you “rescue” (ie crash in to) is worth 1,000. The second 2,000, etc up to the fifth and subsequent ones worth 5,000. A good way to get high scores is to spend the first level getting as many as you can. But the value reverts back to 1,000 after you die.

Sometimes you play a game for a little bit and then you stop playing it and go play something else. But after knowing that a guy work on the game 21 hours a day and he hide the project from his boss taking the chance of getting fire to make that game that makes that game very special!

It sure is, and he wasn't at the company that long when he defied his bosses. I would say he was working there for less than six months.
