Thank you for acknowledging Saint Seiya’s popularity in other parts of the world: aka Mexico, Central America, South America, and large parts of Europe and Asia. Someone on Twitter said a USA Saint Seiya fan is rare like a shiny Pokémon and it makes me laugh every time since I’m one of them.

Saint seiya was pretty huge here in brazil, no one from my generation (90's) hasn't watch at least one ep, i had all of the VHS movies. And the toys was amaizing, you had those dolls and the armor could be on or you could take it out to do your own "armoring up". Lot of memories of this one. I must have know that you would be getting at this because i'm literelly on volume 2. Great video as always trentin

As a huge fan of Saint Seiya, I just want to say thank you for recognizing the work of Masami Kurumada. It deserves so much more love than it gets in the US.
@TrentinArt5 ай бұрын
No problem!! Kurumada was such a huge influence to shounen manga and overall I want to give every manga some justice and a spotlight! While I personally don't love Saint Seiya a ton I really like some of his early works like Ring ni Kakero and Sukeban Arashi. He's a really cool artist!
@justatoaster74765 ай бұрын
I think part of the appeal of Saint Seiya for many was similar to ones I saw listed for Ring Ni Kakero. The protagonists were young boys around the age of jumps readers contrast to the older and more macho characters of series like Fist of the northstar, and have contrasting personalities that allow any reader to see his/herself in at least one of the boys. And despite the storylines being pretty simple it sells a sense of overcoming overwhelming odds very well and embodies the spirit of the magazine sincerely at all times. To a kid or a lover of battle shonen in general its very appealing. In short, it and Kurumada's works in general are unapologetically "shonen".

Saint Seiya is like, super huge in Brazil. Kickstarted an anime fever in the 80s.
@kafiri4 ай бұрын
Finally caught up with this historical series of Jump. It's been a blast! Since this is a historical talk about Jump, I would like to add a little bit about the influence it has on Brasil. I can safely say that Saint Seiya (Knight of Zodiac here) is THE MOST IMPORTANT title for Brasil. It's the fundamental stone about everything regarding anime/mangá. Brasil always had the Tokusatsu culture kinda present since the 70's, but mostly during the whole 80's it was basically the only pop culture from Japan, with Jaspion and Jiraya being very popular during 1988, year of my birth. Saint Seiya would only broadcast here in public TV in 1994 at a smaller channel called Manchete, that only acquired the right cause bigger channels did not wanted to buy it. Manchete claimed it free of charge but having to broadcast commercials of Saint Seiya's merch during their tv schedule. Little to know the anime was an ABSOLUTE MANIA here in Brasil and I can state it cause I lived it. There was almost every product you can imagine. The famous toys with the armors, candies, magazines, clothes, every children related product. It was so successful that Manchete quickly owned the broadcast rights for more years to come. Also it's good to mention that the dubbing of the anime was LEGENDARY (I felt really sorry for this horrible english dub). Saint Seiya was the first BOOM of anime here in Brasil and it opened the door for THE MOST LOVED title in Brasil: Dragon Ball, debuting in 1996 in a bigger public TV channel called SBT. Also with a legendary dub. The high quality of dub that every title had here in Brasil and how they localize the gags and everything else so perfectly helped to boost the popularity of every title. Yu Yu Hakusho dub was a great example of that and it also exceeded here around late 90's. Dragon Ball Z first aired here in 1999 and it's the undisputed favorite anime of all time in Brasil. I myself love Saint Seiya and the importance it has, if I still read or watch it today it will feel ridiculously awesome to me, but I understand that the nostalgic factor counts heavily in it, and someone new to this title today, in 2024, would struggle to catch it's soul. Differently from Dragon Ball, which I'm re-reading after Toriyama's passing and it's insane how it actually still manages to be fresh to this date. I think anyone can easily enjoy even today. Such a genius mangaka Toriyama was. 1999 onwards we started to get a few more popular titles here such as Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokémon, Digimon, Sakura Card Captors. It was around this year that mangá culture was starting to create roots here, with the publisher Conrad bring titles such as Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya and Hadashi no Gen. The mangá boom took some time to actually happen, cause people here was still more anime oriented. One Piece was first published here in 2002 by Conrad but it didn't managed to succeed as the other ones. Around this period, the anime mania wasn't the same, so the new titles weren't been published or broadcasted here at public TVs. And as you could see by the years I've mentioned, we were getting stuff with a lot of delay (although we did got it first than many countries), we first saw anything Saint Seiya related only 8 years from the manga release. Dragon Ball was 10 years after the mangá release... but 2005 onwards as the internet grew stronger the same did brazilian's love for anime and manga, we started to DIY. This was the beginning of fansub culture here in Brasil. A lot of fan made websites and foruns were created to translate anime and also mangá chapters and it was a period were we would get our late animes/mangá like this or with non official fan made DVD. This marks the era of Naruto, which is probably the second most loved title here in Brasil. It was insane how quickly it rose by the fans itself and how quickly cable TV decided to bet on it too. With oficial dubbing taking place, the anime being broadcast at public TV and also the actual boom of mangá happening, in 2007 Naruto skyrocketed here, also with merch everywhere. This is when publisher Panini officially started to release Naruto here. Panini and JBC it's still today the two biggest publishers of mangá here. From that year onwards we always got good titles and were as closest as we could get to Japan release titles. Bleach was published quite after Naruto and although it was commercially successful, the anime never exploded at TV here. But basically every major Jump mangá at that time somehow got to be published here. And even if it didn't, as Gintama for instance, people manage to create an online community for it and fansub culture never lost it's strength down here. By 2012 One Piece started to be published by Panini and this is when started to rise it's popularity mainstream. It was already VERY strong online with the fansubs, but the manga was not continued by Conrad back then and the anime was never seriously invested at TV. We've got a good first dub, but it was also discontinued. But we can say that from 2012 forward the mangá alone helped the popularity of One Piece mainstream wise, which helped the anime to get a new dub in 2018 and since it landed at Netflix we can finally say that One Piece is undeniably huge and mainstream here in Brasil. And it's exponentially growing since then. It's very fulfilling to look around and easily see a lot of friends just jumping into One Piece's boat right now while in here from more than 16 years already. Well, this was longer than I thought, but I hope I managed to contribute just a little bit on why historically Saint Seiya is huge in Brasil. Crazy to think that someone deciding to broadcast this anime way back in 1994 would lead to me falling in love with this culture, to learn japanese and even being here today writing this very comment. Thanks for your videos. Needless to say I'm enjoying it a lot and learning tons from them!

As a new fan of Saint Seiya from the US, it's nice to see another English speaker talk about his work and influence. I know the story of why it wasn't popular in the US but why wasn't it popular in the UK?
@TrentinArt4 ай бұрын
I can't tell you for sure but anime is definitely a relatively new thing here, nobody where I'm from got to see anything like Dragonball or naruto even since our television blocks are quite different, so Saint seiya is even further down that pipeline and I doubt its something that crops up much in conversation here even now. The most anime you'd get for a long time in the UK was just 4kids pokemon and yugioh tbh But overall I'm a big fan of Masumi Kurumada and his works overall, really influential mangaka who deserves more praise!

Just a small correction, Cosmo is not bestowed by Athena, it´s the life-force of every human, and all have the potential to awaken to it through training. Saint Seiya is, like you said, a very influential series in latin America, where it stands alongside Dragon Ball in popularity and relevance to this day. People find it appealing because as a series it showcases perfectly the three pillars of Jump: friendship, effort and victory, remarking on the prowess of the Saints to never give up, no matter how lost everything looks, always fighting against impossible odds and defying the divine intentions of the gods with a very rebel and young spirit. Sadly, the series never found footing on America due to an early 2000´s shit dub that got aired waaay past it´s prime. The series got remade as an americanized version on Netflix to try and captivate a new audience, but it botched the entire lore and most of the early story, even going as far as to change names only keeping Seiya´s (Shiryu became Long, Ikki is Nero, Hyoga is Magnus, and Shun, the most sensible and yet badass man, got turned into a woman, cause pink armor equals girl. The director tried to excuse this change as triying to make a more diverse cast, but it ended up coming out more as him reinforcing stereotypes about sentimental men and femeninity).

Guan Yu is more famous as a character in Chinese classic novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms". I recommend you to familiarize yourself with it, because it's been crazy influential for Japanese culture. I have question Trentin: Dragon Ball manga had mostly 13-14 pages long chapters throughout its long run, but why is that? I guess Toriyama had the privilege to make the chapters shorter than your average WSJ chapter?
@TrentinArt5 ай бұрын
I can't say for sure but the best theory I've heard is because it started out as a gag comedy manga. To supplement this Dr.Slump was similar, it had a lower page count of 13-14ish pages so maybe whatever contract Toriyama made with Jump/Suieisha had that as a stipulation and he kept it going into DB even when it shifted to be more Battle oriented! That's my best guess anyway
