Yeah, and he just glossed over how great the community is. The people in there are amazing! MAPS are also another big part of the community. I think it’s a great way for beginners to start animating and another way to bring members of the community together. The Kirby reanimate, the power puff girl reanimate, Dope map, and many others are just a few amazing maps and I highly recommend them! Hell, the “map” Rex duodecim angelus is a animation map the was considered ( and confirmed) to be cannon. It has original music by Toby fox and 45+ artists. Not to mention all the 3D artists. It’s a shame that he just included the story animators and only a few other animators but I guess that’s I can’t do much :p

Some facts are a bit messy about this. Newgrounds did provide Monitization options and things to creators for a while. A huge reason why a lot of Newgrounds Stapled maded KZbin accounts was do to the MASSIVE amount of Freebooting content that was happening in the early days of youtube. They literally where forced to move because people where stealing their content. The only really stayed on KZbin because it gained a huger following, and gave more money... Which now isn't really the case sadly. Still, NG is probably the best place to be found and get out there with your original artistic content honestly.

I think, the problem with youtube animation now is the incentive to make youtube videos isn't creativity anymore. Where before, the most creative, unique, quality videos, that got the most views, got rewarded, it fueled artists to take their time and actually work on their creative ideas. Not to mention it also made that there were fewer videos, that were shorter, that all had some new ideas, that were easily digestible. So there was that sense of community where you knew what was going on. And animation thrived so much because animation is one of the hardest mediums to produce that only a few people could but also the one with the most payout quality/entertainment wise. They even beat skits in terms of popularity. Now youtube went from quality based, to basically a vlogging site. Vlog while you play a game. Vlog while talking in front of the camera. Vlog on a show about memes. Vlog but animate it a bit. The system makes it so you have to have an endless stream of ideas produced within a short amount of time and with good length. A vlogging generator. That's why so many creators are burnt out. Why animation on youtube doesn't feel as 'good' anymore. You can't polish an idea, a masterpiece, and be rewarded for it, so now people just talk about their lives, which is fine but when it's everywhere it gets oversaturated, where you can only follow a few people at once because otherwise you can't keep up. Animation on youtube isn't about series, shows, stories anymore, that whole creative element went missing on youtube across the board. Oh and the political bs, the swear word censorship, demonetization, also dumbed down creators because any form of censorship won't bring out your genuine creative side. Only with outside resources can animators thrive now, like patreon, see: hasbin hotel and alan becker. But even patreon has their own rules and censorship. Well, it's tough to monetize this stuff, but it doesn't mean animation on youtube is dead, there's plenty but mostly non profit

Animations are literally the illusion of movement whether it be drawing, clay figure, or otherwise. If it gives out the illusion of movement, it's animation. I went to animation school and storyboards are considered "storyboard animations/animatics (which are still animations by their own right)" so it's pretty much still animation. I still don't get why people are giving that excuse that "one stiff character telling stories is not animation". It very much is but a stiffer version of it. Basically, if a drawing moves... it's animation.

the solution to the "watch time" dilemma that I don't know how no one has thought of yet: instead of looking at the cumulative time spent on a channel/video, just make the system look at the average percentage of the video watched. If youtube did it that way, animators could do just as well as they used to, because just as people watch the majority of a 10 minute gaming video or vlog, they also almost invariably watch the entirety of a 2-3 minute animation video.

I think the reason why Story time animation channels went big is because of the limited release schedules that the channels are working with. Since someone like Jaiden can only release so many videos in a short amount of time, the audience tunes into other channels doing the same schtick and watch other people's content while they wait for new Jaiden contend to pop up. Which brings a whole new meaning to "cartoon network" where story time animation channels fall into a positive feedback loop snowballing into a bigger whole

I'm not sure whether I sit in a niche here but I love multiple variations on the "KZbin animation" scene. I do follow plenty story time animators (which I'm aware some do not consider to be animators), but I also adore many significantly smaller animation channels who work on MAPs, AMVs, memes and original series. I'm blown away by the content these small channels produce time and time again, with such works as the two MEME MAPs hosted by Chiibe and series such as 'Twelve' and 'Origins' by Petpyves (which I'm aware is an animatic) and 'Overgrowth' by Crowfolly and SOOOOOO MANY MORE! This comment is long enough as is. But I think that there are improvements to be made on this video and ignoring some big hits (e.g. Vivziepop's Die Young AMV and Alan Becker's Animator Vs. Animation series) and the majority of small channels is a bit of a discredit to the community, so I understand people's frustration, but cut him some slack people as covering everything would be impossible, and as the title of this series suggests this is only a BRIEF history of KZbin animation. Further note, not that anyone will read this, but perhaps he could cover MAPs, AMVs, animation memes and possibly even the voice acting community in future videos.
