I have to wonder what the events occured in my life to quick on a video about NSNs so urgently.

Haha, I'm glad I'm not the only one.

When I was deployed, I found the NSN for an M1A Abrahams tank, and put it in the order log. It made it through our base, and on to the next level. Whoever that was, called us up asking how they want it shipped to us, and also why a USAF aircraft maintenance unit needs a tank. I got yelled at.

NATO: For once in your life can you just standardize with the rest of us!? US: *Screaming demonically in the back of the car*

It's bizarre that the US both came up with the idea of NATO & is also incredibly resistant to actually adhering to its protocols, e.g. the adoption of the M14.

I'm a 13J (artillery nerd) and part of the stuff we have to keep track of is the "plotting set." There are 11 different NSN'd pencils we have to identify and count when inventory comes up and the most detailed description we'll get from the supply NCO's paperwork is "Pencil, Pencil"

This is a really informative video. I have a pistol with a NSN on the frame.

This is a fantastic idea for a video. Something very niche, and not covered by other channels, but vey useful to watchers.

So the answer is actually NSNs aren't particularly significant since they aren't always sequential/grouped together. Except of course useful bits like being able to semi-reliably date a US item if the contract label is missing (pre 74 or post 74) or, even before that, being able to tell what country a national item is from (if included to begin with, first digits are sometimes omitted, among others) even if it's labeled in a foriegn language

As a 92A this is really eye opening for me

Clearly having an NSN doesn't mean the item is standardized among NATO members. It just means someone wants to be able to buy or sell it through NATO channels. Though having an NSN doesn't guarantee that is a possibility either. I once heard a story from an American veteran of a supply clerk (don't remember the actual title) mistyping an NSN when filling out a supplies request for the overseas base they were at. I don't remember what innocuous item he was trying to order but the code he actually put in was for a nuclear weapon. He, and several people above him, were subject to some very uncomfortable conversations as a result, fortunately because they noticed it was an odd request before they tried to fill it.

This was a focused and detailed video. Thank you! I have a few obscure West German produced small arm accessories from the 1950s that I'm trying to research.

Excellent video 📹. Very detailed. We had to pass a NATO Tac Eval every year when I was at the 50th TFW Hahn AB, W. Germany 1987-1989 🇩🇪.

Fantastic as usual, I would love to see some more content regarding a lot of the issued gear being sent to Ukraine. Specifically loadbearing equipment and uniforms.
