With regards to track suits, I think the connection to the collapse of Yugoslavia bears more discussion. In many ways this was the west's first real exposure to that type of gopnik culture as well as its association with military endeavours (NATO intervention). Various militia members wearing assorted civilian clothing like track suits mixed with JNA and imported western uniforms very much now invokes certain images and associations.

Synthwave and Vaporwave were styles from fictional universes. The real world never really looked like that. Most of the world during the early to mid '80's still looked like the mid-late '70's because no bothered to update anything until the late '80's and even then the '90's were arriving, so we associate the pinks and teals more with the early '90's rather than the '80's.

IanPat is hilarious. My first encounter was in a general XCom 2 Camo mod, where it was hidden among real patterns, so I was quite gobsmacked when I saw it. And someone who thinks up something like IanPat will definetely not say no when a clothing company asks him if they can put it on a garment for real.

When I was an officer in the US Army in the mid 1980’s, officers who had been stationed in Korea had the white shirts they wore with their dress blues tailored so the collars, cuffs and the placket down the front were white but the rest of the shirt was a Hawaiian print. As long as you had your jacket on no one knew you were wearing a Hawaiian shirt.

i was just thinking about, specifically the day before yesterday, going down the rabbithole to try and find the headwaters of vapor wave. because so much of 80"s media has this familiar pastiche of common styles. i didn't live in the 80's but my parents stayed stuck in them for a bit after they were gone (probably because, compared to the 80's, the 90s looks like malaise, no more coke and lasers now it's about heroin and flannel) and i remember so much more media and music that incorporates the same aesthetic. "new wave" and "post punk" lending it all an ethereal specious quality. i'm glad you did the work for me and sated my curiosity.

There has been a little corner of the paintball world ( MCB ) that embraced Hawaiian themed clothing and camo a long time ago - namely the hibiscus patterns, sometimes in subdued colors, sometimes bright. There was some consternation there when the boog stuff started to take off, because it felt like a fun and irreverent bit of joking that that already irreverent bunch of paintball folks had embraced was being damaged by it. Plenty of custom clothing and gear had been already in use for some time by those anarchic and anachronistic paintballers. Thanks for another great video!
