The Hobbit - Bilbos Speech - Why did you come back?
Thorin Gandalf and company escape off and out of the mountain only to find Bilbo is not with them. To their surprise moments later, after Thorin says he knew he would run, to the joy of many in the company, some wondering how he escaped (not yet knowing about the ring). Thorin asks Bilbo why he came back. Biblo replying that he thinks of his home because that's where I belong, and that is why he decided to come back, because they don't have one.
Finding the ring is a BIG turning point in Bilbo's fortunes and bravery.
This is also in the scene a point where the dwarves begin to respect the Hobbit far more, and becomes a stronger character, the ring sort of helps that. Gandalf is right to bring him along after all. :)

That's why I'm so disappointed in Battle of the Five Armies, when they deleted the scene where just when it looks like Bard is on the brink of giving up during the battle within the city of Dale, Bilbo helps encourage Bard to keep going on living by planting the acorn he took from Beorns garden and planting it in the city square, illustrating Gandalf's point about Hobbits and Bilbo, that the simple folk with kind hearts and acts of love are the best hope against the darkness. Nah, we need more extra scenes with Alfrid, or Grima Wormtongue 2.0! Oh, and more shoehorned in scenes of Legolas, 'cause remember, he's gonna be in Lord of the Rings! 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️Studios, man.

When Bilbo chooses to return to the group I can't help but think of Sam's line from The Two Towers. "Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turnin' back only they didn't." Bilbo had all the chance to head back to Bag End only he stayed with the dwarves. The courage of hobbits never ceases to amaze me.

I loove Thorin's humble looks after Bilbo said such sweet, selfless words. A battle-hardened warrior of royal blood with an ambitious quest for glory, to be humbled by a reclusive hobbit living in a small village his entire life, is just sooo inspirational. I wish Peter had taken a shot of Bofur in this scene. I wanted to see his reaction, after Bilbo had implied earlier that Dwarves were used to not belonging anywhere.

You also have to keep in mind that this is probably the first instance since Erebor was taken from them that anyone actually offered them sincere help. It's not great kings or mighty armies bound by oaths or fealty coming to their aid, it's a scared little stay-at-home who has never fought a battle in his life before, and he wants to help them out of the genuine goodness of his heart.

Hobbits will always surprise you. Simple folk they may be but they don't stop when they're set to a task. They will long for the comforts of home but will press on forward faithfully. Bilbo gave his word to help Thorin and Co return home, Frodo gave his word to destroy the ring, Sam vowed to protect Frodo while Merry and Pippin not only swore to follow Frodo they gave fealty to a king of Rohan and Stewart of Gondor which they faithfully served. Small in size but giant in heart and loyalty it is wise to never doubt a Halfling.

I feel like Thorin resented Bilbo’s constant complaining about missing his home because Bilbo wasn’t appreciating the fact that he has a home to miss. Ben Stott (Balin) has a fantastic piece of acting right here in this scene. He's in the background and not entirely in focus, but he's hanging on Bilbo's every word, just as interested in his response to Thorin's question as Thorin is (even though we don't see him [Thorin]). And the slow spread of Balin's smile as Bilbo tells him, "But I will help you take it back if I can," completely validates the trust that Balin always had in Bilbo to begin with is perfectly timed as though Balin (Stott) didn't know those were the exact words that Bilbo (Freeman) were going to say. Yes, a great speech and I give great credit to Martin Freeman for his delivery of them, but I would just like to take this moment to applaud Ben Stott for his great performance, too.

I think what makes The Hobbit different from The Star Wars prequels is that you really feel for the characters and they all have different personalities. Tolkein's works have always been about the strength of the meek but loving. They are quintessentially christian, raising love above the masculine virtues, above all other virtues, and they are so brilliantly written that a person can not deny that there is real truth in them. I am not Christian but in Tolkein I still find testimony to the existence of the spiritual.

I will not have truth censored or silenced because some people have bad attitudes. I happen to find Christianity abhorrent in fact, but I love LotR and respect Tolkein enough to respect why he did what he did. LotR extolls Christian philosophy and virtue through a means that can be recognized by people of any religion. Would you have me avoid religious discussion on a Narnia vid? These things are ABOUT religion, even if LotR is less preachy and exclusive than Narnia.
@KingAslan4

waldoman7 I appreciate what you have said! I myself am a Christian, but what I cherish the most about what I believe in are these beautiful virtues that Tolkein has so wonderfully placed in his books. Love, Courage, Mercy, Forgiveness, and Kindness! We are all in this world struggling together to live our lives as best we can and to fulfill our destinies! God bless you all:)
@Garthock
@Garthock 10 жыл бұрын
You said it yourself, any religion can understand and respect these the traits and morality of Tolkien's work. So explain again how this is uniquely "Christian?" Sorry. The respect of humility and kindness goes farther back than Christianity. It just seems too convenient for Christianity to just claim every single good attribute of a human being. Christianity didn't create these traits or is even responsible for it. It just adopted them and touted them. In fact, I've always seen Tolkien's work as a direct criticism of depending on superior power or spiritual beings to save you from the brink of hopelessness. It's only in man and the common person that we can find any hope - not in some divine being or some belief in a predetermined fate (the Elves commonly "foresee" the fate of Middle Earth).

I know I'm a bit late to discussion, but can't agree with you here. Actor, who played Frodo, was excellent. It's just that Frodo himself was really different person, compared to Bilbo. Remember that line in Rivendell: "I'm not like you Bilbo"? But character wise, Frodo was also very interesting one, so it's more like apples vs oranges.

Anyone noticed how action scenes get over a million views and scenes like these only around 200.000 views? I'll tell you why! People who see the depth in these stories know that it is not action that makes a story. The real salt of the story comes from little quotes from little people, such as Bilbo, that humble the strong and proud, such as the Dwarves.

I loved this scene, and in my opinion the light of it is a bit different from what many think. Thorin didn't trust Bilbo, that much is a given, but I believe that all the other dwarves didn't think much of him either. Here in this speech, the dwarves, loyal as they are, find a different kind of loyalty. Not one coming from being a follower of the king or from sharing a similar struggle, but one born out of empathy and genuine care for someone that doesn't have any bonds to them. Here when they see this loyalty and genuine care, they feel bad about what they though about Bilbo and truly accept him as a friend.

It's frustrating to see these films receive so much criticism. For some reason it's now 'trendy' to be a nihilist and hate everything you watch. People seem to forget that The Hobbit was originally a light-hearted adventure for kids/young adults. Is it as deep and nuanced as Lord of the Rings? No, but if you have a problem then take it up with Tolkien. If you simply allow yourself to sit back and get whisked away on an adventure then you'll realize that the films are great fun. I'm not ashamed to say that I honestly enjoyed this trilogy

That's it. That's the scene. This right here is the essence of why my heart sings the tiniest bit louder for the Hobbit movies than for the LotR ones. I wish more people realised this simple, pure form of humanity; of helping someone lost and uprooted find their home again, even though it would have been so much easier and convenient for them if they hadn't. As much as I love and adore the LotR movies, this quite literally, hits a bit closer to home for me.

Sometimes I think he wanted to prove Thorin wrong, but I usually truly believe what he said; although, wanting to prove Thorin wrong was probably part of it. Most people aren’t going to stick around when the main guy is an ass to you constantly, no matter how well everyone else treats you. Thorin wasn’t really toxic, just stubborn, untrusting of anyone he didn’t know and determined, and for the longest time not realizing that he was falling down a toxic path. Sometimes you need a friend there to humble you, remind you that the world isn’t all bad.
