Thorin got downed on the battlefield, he never chased azog up to the tower, and then fili and kili stood over their uncle as he lay mortally wounded and defended him until they got downed aswell.

honestly to me it was more justifiable in the movies, with the azog storyline added. i was always so upset about his death in the book because he just died from battle wounds, and so did fili and kili....and we didnt even get to "see it", which made it feel impersonal imo. his death is still so unfair to me, but at least they gave it another meaning in the movie - he died fighting azog, and made sure to kill him as well before he went, so that he wouldnt be a threat to his and other people...it sort of gave his death a grander purpose, other than just fighting for erebor i guess, but thats just my opinion.

All that acknowledged, erebor isn't just as it appears, for the dwarrow, it is so much more. A Home, Prosperity, Revenge, Reclamation of their birthright, the ancestral home of Durins folk. a physical representation of their return to power, to return to the greatness that the khuzd always had.
