"Go back to your books and your armchair. Plant your trees. Watch them grow." This was actualy the line that moved me the most. It shows how Thorin remembered every small thing Bilbo said to him. Deepdown, Thorin treasured the friendship between them a lot more than Bilbo could think of.

I wholeheartedly agree. I recommend you all to watch The Tolkien edit version of the Hobbit trilogy, a fan edited it out to make a single movie of 4 and a half hours or less. And it is far better. The only thing it lacks is Thorin's funeral scene but that came out in Extended editions later so he couldn't have added it then. IMO "Tolkien edit" version is amazing.

A lot of people can talk shit all they want about the Hobbit Trilogy but it won't change my mind that this is probably one of the most tragic deaths in the Middle-Earth Saga . Thorin was such a well developed and fleshed out character in the Hobbit films. And to see him die brings tears to my eyes. And when you watch Fellowship after the Hobbit it really brings warmth to your heart. The Hobbit Trilogy may not be as good as LOTR but that does not mean they are terrible films. I love the Hobbit Trilogy for what it did. Thank you J R R Tolekin and thank you Peter Jackson for giving us the Hobbit and LOTR

@Pro_Butcher_Amateur_Human8 жыл бұрын
Even as one of the people who generally hates on the Hobbit trilogy passionately for ruining one of the most amazing books I've ever read, which was a cornerstone of my literary experience as a child, I do agree that this scene was well done. Martin Freeman's acting was, for me, the highlight of an otherwise uninspired and dull trilogy. This was the only scene where I actually liked the actor who played Thorin. I do agree too that Thorin's character was more well rounded than most, but I didn't particularly care for the actor before this scene. The things I hated about the trilogy are, I suspect, the same complaints shared by most of the haters. Terrible and incredibly overused CGI, generally mediocre casting, horrific script writing, bizarre story choices, completely destroying any tension and drama with Smaug by killing him off in the opening scene of the third film instead of at the end of the second, and the comedy dwarf battle scenes (THAT barrel scene, WTF was going on there? Who thought that would be a good idea?!) But yes, I do agree, this scene, and a couple of others, were very well done. Peter Jackson, however, I don't particularly blame for the horrible mess the films descended into. I read something a while ago that said that New Line forced it on him. PJ wanted to do 2 films, they made him do 3, making him have to add all that bloat and filler. PJ wanted to do mostly live action like LOTR, New Line made him use predominantly CGI to shorten production time. It really did and does look like PJ had very little control over the Hobbit films. But then, if you listen to the audio commentaries on the extended edition of the LOTR films, you learn he had to fight New Line for a lot of stuff in those movies too. Did he not fight as hard for the Hobbit, or did they only see a cash-cow and dig their heels in? I suspect the latter. Either way, it's New Line that should get the blame for thr Hobbit. We should just feel sorry for PJ. His career has been damaged, much of his previously adoring fanbase now despise him, and he'll never get to do another Middle Earth project, which had been his dream since he was a teenager, as Christopher Tolkien has said he'll not give permission again after that fiasco.

@@TheUrizen In context of the books, I find Thorin’s death more moving. Bilbo used to be that care free self indulgent Hobbit that built only his own world. However with his travels and the bonds he built, ultimately losing some of his closest friends even right before his very eyes, really tore him apart. When he returned to the Shire, he was never the same Hobbit that left 13 months ago. Thorin's death including two of his kin, ensuring that he left a part of himself at Erebor. It is also the very story Tolkien wanted to tell about world war 1. That when you see your comrades die in front of you, speaking their last words, your life will never be the same again.

@floramathilda9 жыл бұрын
Because people want the movies to be exactly like the books and the fact is...they can't. That's why others need to learn to enjoy the film for what it is. There are things you just can't fit into the film or won't work in a film so you have to adjust accordingly. Many also think there's too much CGI. (A petty complaint in my book.) How I look at it is, these films are great companions to the novel not replacements. These films could be a great way for people to test the waters before going into the novel. What I love about Peter Jackson's work with The Hobbit & LOTR is that he makes it the book and something else.
@jeremyspice519 жыл бұрын
Bookmarks & Wildflowers No it's not that at all. People look down on these movies because it suggests greed and a love of money- rather ironic when you think what the book is about. The Hobbit is a very short book and yet somehow it was stretched out into multiple pointless movies when the book and it's story just isn't long enough to fill out 3 movies. If you wanted it to be exactly like the book it would only be one movie not three. It says to me they wanted to drag it out year after year to make as much money as possible not for the love of the book. That's why people look down on them.

***** Well if you hated the Hobbit as a book then I would imagine that your view point on it would be that the movies can only be better. I however loved the hobbit and hated the movies. I don't have a problem with movies changing the storyline slightly as not everything in a book can be filmed nor would it necessarily make a good movie if you stayed 100% accurate to it. But the way they dragged the hobbit movies out to me suggests that the producers were focusing on money rather then giving us one good movie.

You know, I felt sad when Boromir died, when Faramir was riding off to certain death, when Theoden died in Eowyn's arms, and when Frodo left Sam, but nothing else in Middle Earth has made me cry actual tears as when Thorin dies. What a tragic figure--perhaps the second most tragic Middle Earth character on film. Whatever issues I have with The Hobbit and PJ's version of Middle Earth in general, this is one note they hit better than all expectations: the complicated, shifting, ultimately immensely rewarding relationship between the humble hobbit and the proud dwarf king. Theirs isn't the only poignant friendship in Middle Earth, and other iconic friendships may get more fame, but for my money, no other friendship stands out in such a dramatically tragic and beautiful way as theirs does--building respect, trust, and closeness due to choices made actively and understandings earned with difficulty (which is refreshing and unique among Middle Earth friendships depicted on screen--generally either born of childhood friendships or lightly developed from a certain ease of companionship, being similar characters with similar goals on the same side of good vs evil). By the time we follow Bilbo and Thorin to this point and see how their story ends, it is emotionally devastating and genuinely haunting. Very well done by all involved.

I never understood why people hate this trilogy. I've read the book probably 30 times and I adore it, but I've definitely watched the movies more times than I can count. I absolutely love these films and Martin Freeman is an international treasure.

Same i love this trilogy too! And i guess after rings of power more people will value this trilogy
@TurinStark5 Жыл бұрын
I think it's the many additional plot tines which were unnecessary, the videogame like battles against the goblins, the barrel scene, etc. However I do agree that some of the fan edits ranging from 2 to 4 hours really make the Hobbit a fantastic single film.
@Tippotipo3 ай бұрын
@@TurinStark5 Some people find a way to complain no matter what. The Hobbit Movie blog clearly mentioned some additional part will get added from Appendice of LOTR with some extra embellishments no different from LOTR trilogy. The only difference is the time constraint imposed by WB and their interference.

So much like star wars. People needed a dose of sequel trilogy to like the prequels and appreciate it for the right things it did even though it was quite flawed.@@winxclubflora8446

I love how Martin Freeman acts Bilbo's reaction to Thorin's apology over what he'd said at 0:33. Without saying a word, Bilbo's expression says "no apology is necessary." I don't think Bilbo ever resented Thorin for anything - he was only concerned and afraid for him, and nothing more.

Seriously, I was sad at Fili and Kili's death and everything, but I was starting to think that I could get through this film without crying since it was very meh in quality. However, as soon as Bilbo started crying, it's like he turned on the faucet and I was sobbing till the end. I can't take hobbits crying. Seriously. It's an even more potent trigger than chopping onions.

This scene is truly heartbreaking and genuine. Both actors are brilliant in this. What fascinated me the most was those almost invisible little changes in thorins face as his life was fading. So many death scenes are just like "close my eyes turn my head, boom I am dead now". But this... holy cow I sobbed. Just the way his expressions flatten like this... I have seen the moment of death a few times irl, and this was just so accurately played.

This is actually a more tragic friendship than Sam and Frodo's. They started as strangers, Thorin disliked Bilbo in the beginning, but in the end he realized that the hobbit was the only true human among them gold-seekers. Always bring tears this line, 'if more people valued home above gold, this world would be a merrier place'. This is the best line in both trilogies, it's a tragic epilogue, for a dwarf that had the sickness of gold in his mind his whole life, he was obsessed with it and in the end he lost all his kin and his own life because of that. Tolkien is a brilliant story-teller, even if Hobbit was written addressing a younger audience, it has a lot of hidden gems of wisdom in its pages.
