Yeah a lot of buildings don't register explosive barrels being contained within their walls so any unlucky sods on the 2nd floor or just outside are in their blast radious!

The carpenter is a naval thing. Iunno why he's in the land mode, but the name is accurate as in reality he would be on a ship wedging holes, improvising new yards and so on, hence the axe. (And the blunderbuss, although not specific to one man on a ship, would be used for repelling boarders.)
