The carpenter is a naval thing. Iunno why he's in the land mode, but the name is accurate as in reality he would be on a ship wedging holes, improvising new yards and so on, hence the axe. (And the blunderbuss, although not specific to one man on a ship, would be used for repelling boarders.)

Carpenters were part of armies back then, they were paid for things like gun stock repairs, even furniture repairs for officers. Its odd they included such a specific thing in a war simulator game though, because its not like they included a prostitute class
