Imo, he’s like Clint Eastwood for example. Simply put, he’s just there to act and knows at the end of the day that it’s a job. Doesn’t mean one can have passion and skill for such though, and he shows it.

Whilst first watching “The Holdovers” I was very aware that I was falling more and more in love with it, which is the type of unique experience you can only get from an instant classic. I’ll always be grateful for this film because, given the ideological, lazy drivel that passes for contemporary filmmaking and storytelling, it reminded what a wonderful and life-enhancing medium film can be. Thank you Reaper for both your thoughtful review and drawing attention to an exceptional example of cinema.

Wow! An ACTUAL good movie that doesn’t berate, pander, annoy, enrage and/or lecture people about what they should or shouldn’t like or hate for the sake of pushing anti-escapism and instead does what a REAL movie should do and entertains its audience with good writing, good pacing, good story, good directing, good music and good characters? Consider me perplexed!

Bravo, David. More genre-redefining, trope-subverting, atmospheric, dark and eerie, emotionally draining, gut wrenching, aesthetically heavy craft by post-horror auteur with an arthouse edge, dread-inducing, suspenseful build up with strong character development and gradual feeling of escalation, bone-chilling slow burn with “say more with less” approach and soul-shaking, blood-curdling, skin-crawling and nerve-wracking exercise in persistently looming dread where tension and anxiety permeates every frame as movie reaches its nail-biting, jaw-clenching and paranoia-inducing final climax, free of any cheap gore or cartoonish CGI drama film, truly elevated kinography.

Completely agree - it was easily the best American movie last year. Payne is going to find himself alone, the last of dead breed, as a writer-director who still cares to make rich human movies, by humans, for humans. I was worried for a minute that Payne might have caught the woke bug, but he just flat ignores it. The Holdovers is a movie from another time (as Payne cleverly emphasizes).
