Apparently the young Don Van Vliet (later to find fame - infamy? - as Captain Beefheart) once sold vacuum cleaners door to door. He'd ring the bell, the lady of the house would open the door and he'd announce, "This machine sucks!"

Interesting. I love hearing about early jobs. Some off the top of my head: Many future Seattle grunge musicians worked for Muzak’s bureau there in the early ‘80s; Philip Glass was a cab driver & plumber in NYC; Alex Chilton was a tree cutter in New Orleans; Bruno Mars was an Elvis impersonator; Amy Adams was a Hooters girl; Charles Bukowski worked at a post office; Kim Gordon was an art critic...

According to Brian Johnson on the Howard Stern show interview, he recorded this commercial and then, on the same evening, went to the AC/DC audition. The audition was already scheduled and AC/DC would not have been able to hear this commercial yet so I'm not sure how it "helped him join". He said the audition went well and they didn't even want him to leave. This commercial was released later. He mentioned he made 350 quid for this commercial and considered not going to the audition at all. I could certainly have something mixed up. After all, this is Brian Johnson TV, but that was my understanding and how I ended up here after searching for this. For the Howard Stern Show interview, search: Brian Johnson's Audition for AC/DC (2011)
@ryanwelu54883 жыл бұрын
Brian wasn’t sure about auditioning for AC/DC at first bc he had no money to go or whatever. But then Hoover called him up to do this commercial, he accepted and then told AC/DC he could only audition on this day. That’s how it “helped him join” bc if Hoover didn’t offer/pay him for that, he wouldn’t of made the trip down and wouldn’t of been across the street from AC/DC. Like it wasn’t the published commercial itself that got him to AC/DC, just the fact that the two studios were right next to each other. At least that’s what I’ve read about it.

It was fate that the buddy of Brian’s made the call that day in 1980 the same day AC/DC called after what sadly happened to Bon Scott it was sad but at the same time good fate for Brian that he made that decision to sing Tina Turner’s “ Nutbush city limits “ instead of Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the water” and that he decided to walk across the road to vanilla studios to meet up with the band the first time. After making this commercial/advertisement . I think it would be awesome to get to know Brian just once to meet him crack open a beer or a soda in my case cause I can’t drink alcohol cause of my seizure medicines? Just once in my life . My dad knew AC/DC he was part of the road crew before he died he said if he was alive still he would have been part of the road crew but cancer is a b and took him and they found out via the autopsy sadly.
