Btw, as a Catholic, there's a legend about St. Nicholas. When he was at the Council of Nicaea, there was this guy named Arius who said that God the Son (Jesus) was created and not truly divine, which would basically make him a heretic and the heresy of Arianism is named after him. St. Nicholas lost his cool and slapped Arius right across the face. He had his bishop vestments removed as punishment and was imprisoned. He eventually repented and reobtained his clerical vestments. I will warn you that it may not be 100% accurate. Anyways, Tugg, let me know if you see this.

Because of the "santa clause is coming to town" song, I thought santa could hear me like god could lol. So i prayed to santa when i was 7, asking him to put a little chocolate in a decorative pocket on my Christmas stocking, to prove he was real and listening. So yeah, there was no little Hersheys kiss or nothing in that pocket and i was crushed. The next year i stayed up and heard my parents whisper cursing at each other trying to lay out Christmas presents lol so by 8, i was for sure santa wasnt real. Then i had to reckon with my thoughts about god lol

On the topic begging for food and drink, that is actually still practised in a slightly more convoluted and entertaining way in Newfoundland, Canada. It normally called 'Mummering' and involves getting a group together in costumes to conceal identity, then, you go door to door (of friends and family) asking to be let in. If you are let in, you normally do some kind of song and the host tries to guess who you are. After you normally have a drink or snack and go to the next house.

Fun fact, La Befana is Italian and she doesn’t eat kids. She was an old Italian lady often depicted as a witch with old torn clothes. She was cleaning her house when the three kings came to ask for directions to see baby Jesus she waved them away because she was “busy cleaning”. Later she felt guilty and started going around the world leaving presents and treats to children hoping one of them was Jesus. Italians celebrate La Befana after Christmas, and in some regions in Italy parents have their kids choose which toys they want to keep, and leave the rest out for La Befana to give to less fortunate children around the world.

I live in a small town in Belgium (I'm American) and they still do the black Pete festivities, but most people who dress up as him just do the smudges on the face thing that you showed- they recently added to the story that while Sinterklaas was travelling on his boat from Spain, Pete, who is black because he's covered in soot, apparently (despite also canonically being a Moor), fell off the boat and so some of the soot washed off, so that's what they tell kids now if they ask why his whole face isn't black anymore, though I doubt the kids really care, they just want speculaas and candy. You do see some of the full on black paint, red lips and gold earring stuff, sometimes, though. And it was definitely wild as an American to just wake up and go outside my first Christmas here to see a full brass band of black petes walking down the street. Love when you throw shade at the Dutch, though, my partner laughs a lot when i show those bits to him :)

Honestly, with modern-day toys, manufacturing, and modern economics, I feel like there is no need to lie to children. I actually find it so ironic that the kids who feel betrayed and believed so hard in santa (raised by Christian parents) only for him to be fake also drop their religion because they were also told to believe in a god they could not see and can do miracles much like a Santa. Nobody talks about this, but I find it slightly funny as one of those kids.

Shamans dried these mushrooms in stockings by the fire and entered homes through chimneys when snow blocked doors. Reindeer, central to Sami culture, ate these mushrooms and "flew" (hallucinated), possibly inspiring Santa's flying reindeer. Fascinating blend of folklore and tradition! Great video, Tugg. However, Clement Clarke Moore wrote, "A Visit From St. Nicholas" in 1823. Washington Irving wrote "Bracebridge Hall" in 1822, which basically takes place during Christmas at an English Manor House. Love your videos. Have a very Merry Christmas.

Fun fact: Mari Lwyd is a Welsh tradition (pronounced marry loyd) where a group of people stick a horses skull on a stick and put on garlands, go to peoples houses and sing/give poems requesting entry to houses wanting beer and food. The residents have to refuse but by singing/giving poems. If the residents lose, they have to give Mari Lwyd food and alcohol. It’s essentially a bunch of dudes rap battling random people.

Yeah, I moved in Northern France near Flamish Belgium, where Sinterklaas is still commonly celebrated, as a 5th grader, and I learned about Zwarte Pieten (8:55) in Dutch class, and I found it kinda weird, not gonna lie.
@EftelboyTVАй бұрын
It is weird, but a very sensitive issue because most of the Netherlands consist of older folks wanting to keep that tradition :/

Around here, it's baby Jesus who is getting us gifts 😔 on his own birthdays!

Controversial statement: I think we should ban Christmas.

Becoming adult just means it's a time of year we're suppose to give our neices and nefews gifts to show love. 😂

@IntrovertRedacted Dude, they have names for people who don't like christmas. Grinch or Scrooge. They need a scapegoat to villify to justify themselves celebrating a holiday. That's fucked up.

I know in some places in the world it isn't santa that brings the gifts, it's instead Baby Jesus that brings you gifts. And something about that is hilarious.

I never believed in Santa because from early on my parents just straight up told me "Santa ain't real"
