During the Second World War, there were thousands of people who were executed inside of Nazi Germany. Many people who defied and resisted Hitler and his government were executed on devices such as the guillotine, however during his time in power there were some executions in Germany which were performed by axe. Execution by axe was a medieval method, but Baroness Benita von Falkenhayn was convicted of spying and she was accused of passing on military secrets about the future German invasion of Poland that began World War 2.
Benita von Falkenhayn was a wealthy Baroness, but she had an affair with a polish officer who utilised her to obtain these secrets, and Benita was performing spy work. However she was arrested, and a few years after Hitler was in power she was sentenced to death and was executed by axe inside of Plotzensee Prison. After her execution, Hitler banned execution by axe inside of Germany as he was fearful that people would view his regime and government as medieval and barbaric.

The German beheading axe was shorter and heavier than the English axe. This meant that it did not have to be lifted so far in order to achieve the force necessary to cut through the neck. This in turn made the stroke more accurate. People don't realise that the third Reich probably guillotined more people than the French Revolution.

There is a forum called something like "Beheading in the third Reich". It runs to something in the region of 500 pages. On page 1, it gives a figure of 16,000 to 20,000 beheadings. This is possibly expanded on later in the forum if anybody cares to plough through it .

Something interesting in this, which I checked elsewhere. Beneta first came under suspicion in 1932 before Hitler came to power... This implies that German plans to invade Poland were well underway before 1932 never mind sometime prior to 1939. "In the late 1920s, Falkenhayn became friends with the Polish intelligence agent Major Jerzy Sosnowski, whom she had met at the horse races, and became his lover. He made her socialise with employees at the Ministry of the Reichswehr to obtain secret documents concerning the preparations for a German Invasion of Poland. At least from 1932, her activities were monitored by the Abwehr intelligence agency..."

It also means the baroness was a spy and a traitor to Germany before it was a Nazi state, thus removing the moral cover of being anti-Nazi. Until 1933 that would make her just a traitor and a dupe for the Polish intelligence service. Of course there's still 7 intervening years that make up for that.

I missed a visit to the ancient town hall in Ghent where all the ghoulish instruments of punishment were on display. Rats. Cheers all.

@TheUntoldPast There were far more brutal methods of execution than the German ax or richtbeil. It was a far superior instrument than the unwieldy ax in the Tower of London which you showed in your video. The haft was short and the ax head weighed about 12 pounds with a much larger cutting edge than the English ax. It was a well-balanced instrument and very fast and efficient. Because of the short haft and heavy blade the ax did not have to be lifted high and did not have to be swung with force as the weight and sharpness of the blade did most of the work. The protocol for the execution was very different from descriptions of English ax executions. Descriptions of German ax executions say that once the victim was handed over to the execution team of several men things moved very quickly indeed. There was very little blood seen because of the way the low bench on which the victim lay was positioned against the high execution block. It is worth noting that in previous centuries beheadings in the various German states were generally carried out with the sword. However, this required great skill which meant that executions were sometimes bungled. The ax was equally efficient and easier to use and so it came into use. Unlike the ax in the Tower of London it was designed to behead people and it did the work very quickly and well.

@@markgrabowski8662 The @ sign at the beginning of my comment tells you to whom it is directed. As to the why - well their videos about executions are usually entitled The Brutal/Horrific etc execution. That strikes me as click bait. The fact is that executions are not pleasant but the German ax was extremely fast and effective, and the executioners who used it were very skilled. The whole process from when the victim was handed over to the executioner's assistants to the moment the ax fell was very quick. Hence I don't think the word 'horrific' was appropriate.

@@DarrenMalin I would think though that a 'pleasant execution' would defeat the partial purpose of a person being executed for a crime in the first place... Most people who don't understand cryptocurrency talk about precious metals a lot, but they refuse to expand use-case (trade it locally so it's seen as acceptable currency and it's trade value is known). They also tend to understand how bad CBDC would be, but don't seem to realize that saying "nuh-uh, I don't wanna!" will do absolutely nothing to stop it (that is in fact how to usher it in), and that the only battlefield there is to fight it on is by utilizing cryptocurrencies which can't be centrally controlled. It's like an enemy has invaded your nation and convinced you that you're too smart to fight back because "battles are dumb". Smugly allowing the worst outcome to just happen while you point out that you protested weakly the whole time, as if that mattered.

Has to be one of history's more idiotic statement that Hitler didn't want Nazi Germany to be seen as medieval. Among other things, the medieval age ,while sadly far too often brutal, gave us art ahs music&,the underpinnings of the modern world. Nazi Germany moved things backwards, it set civilization in the country back a thousand years or more, the barbarian period.

Damn kid, that's some stupid statement. Just 1000 years? Why not 10000 years?

@@BesoffenerIslamist 10000 years ago ppl in Germany were still in the early stages of settling into permanent villages, they likely were more civilized or at least peaceful than 1000 years ago. No gluttonous church corrupted by power, no petty kingdoms killing each other over what kind nobleman got some 9 yr old princess as a bride.

Some of us believe there SHOULD BE executions, and that they SHOULD be public, VERY public, and BRUTAL. Maybe shitheads would not be so eager to beat to death, rob, rape, and so on.
