Oh this is so sad. She seemed like a genuinely kind and lovely young lady. It’s terrible that her killer got away with this. Why did no one suspect Mr Greenwood’s friend? The one who “found” the letter…. If only what was believed about the eyes reflecting the last thing she saw, were true. RIP Sarah Jane Roberts. Thank you for sharing this one BC.

I think the guy that visited and found the letter, was the one who delivered it. It seemed quite coincidental. Then if he asked her if it was from a suitor.... This is such a sad case. It was extremely brave of Mrs Greenwood to go downstairs like that. What an awful shock, especially as she seemed fond of Mary Jane. I would like to know how much money the pair of suspects had on them at the time they were stopped in Plymouth, and the cost of their fare to Australia if it had already been paid. It seems just possible to me that one or both were paid for the deed. Mr Greenwood's business partner would be of interest to me. He knew one of the men, that the parcel of land mentioned was owned by Mr Greenwood, and it was he that found that dodgy letter and handed it to Mary Jane. Perhaps he had been giving her unwanted attention, or he believed she had overheard something unfavourable? There are many reasons, and many other willing but rejected suitors. As for the weapon, a man's walking stick, so fashionable at that time, with a heavy metal top, may easily have been sufficient. No one would have thought twice of a man carry one, and the darkness would hide any blood stains on the clothing. It is so sad that the case was never solved, especially for Mr Greenwood, and Mary Jane's family. Fabulous and compelling work as always Brief Case! 🙂
@pimpozza2 жыл бұрын
Excellent points you make here, Anna 👍 I was wondering about Mr Greenwood's business partner too. Such a sad case..
@con.troller41832 жыл бұрын
Yes, the partner, William Cooper, should have been closely examined. The suspect had very particular knowledge of the household and its habits. The contradiction in the letter (claiming ignorance of the address it was hand delivered to), and the fact that it was "discovered" in Cooper's presence, is very suspicious. I would suggest that the property was just a clumsy ruse to get Mr. Greenwood out of the house so the killer could be alone with Sarah Jane. She would likely not have admitted a casual visitor, especially not a young suitor, but might have welcomed Mr. Cooper without question. This would also explain why there was no initial commotion when the visitor came in. The struggle might have ensued after he made his unwelcome advances.

Totally senseless murder of poor Sarah. Life cut too short far too young.❤️🌹
@vanessathomas74372 жыл бұрын
@Anna Gettings, You are on point about the walking stick! I didn't think of that and neither did the police. That's why the weapon wasn't found...the murderer took it with him, you would be a great detective, right up there with Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downing, Jr. version😁) I was suspicious of the business partner too, the way he alluded to a letter from an admirer. A "respectable gentleman" would not have said something like that to the "hired help" back in Victorian Era.
@spacecowgurl572 жыл бұрын
Heartbreaking. To have led such a short life and be hardworking, simplistic yet dutiful, the demise of a lovely young woman left still such an impression upon death. ♥️
@TheKulu422 жыл бұрын
I agree with some other commentators here that Mr. Cooper should have been questioned more closely. The fact the letter was "found" while he was there is suspicious, and there is that point when Mrs. Greenwood thought that she heard two people downstairs. Sarah quietly admitting Mr. Cooper, a man she knew, perhaps? He could have said that he was looking for Mr. Greenwood, and when told that he was out, Cooper said that he could wait for him. Perfectly innocent. Another commentator suggested that a walking stick, common in that era, was the murder weapon. A lot of those sticks were designed to be weapons as well as fashion statements.

When you said the surgeon just cradled her in his arms, I realized how hard and helpless and frustrating it must have been to be a doctor back then, being able to do so little to help a lot of people. At this point in time, medicine had already come so far throughout history, but still so far behind now. Makes me happy to be alive now. I just turned 40yrs old, even just 150yrs ago, I'd be nearing the end of my life! It seems like a lot of doctors in the past could only provide comfort care a lot of the time, sad. This poor young girl didn't deserve this. She probably was as pure as she seemed. So sorry for her.

This is a heartbreaking case! Poor Sarah, she seemed such a lovely young woman with so much ahead of her. Mrs. Greenwood was undoubtedly very fond of her to brave the stairs and possible intruders. She’s a victim as well to the sots responsible. Mr. Greenwood must have been beside himself to have left them and lost them in such succession. His business partner needed to be looked at much more thoroughly, but then again perhaps the police didn’t know the full details of Sarah discovering the letter to begin with. God knows who committed this wretched crime and has handed out his judgement. Cheers BC, for keeping them in our memories and showing such respect to them. You sound a bit stuffy, I do hope it’s just the allergies all around. I’d make soup and post it but Ireland isn’t fond of such things going through it’s post! 🤗

This was sad all the way around. That poor teenager. I believe the business partner had a hand in this. Maybe he was spurned by her. They're just so many unanswered questions. Tragic just tragic. Only God and Sarah and the business partner know what happened and I believe he's 1000 percent quilty he may have even committed the horrible unthinkable crime himself! I also believe he was writing her those letters that mysteriously disappeared maybe he wanted those back so his wife wouldn't find out or maybe she threatened to expose him! So many unanswered questions. Once again great job BC.keep them coming.

You always have the most interesting stories for us! This one is so sad. She seemed like a sweet young lady, and it's sad that they never found the killer, and that it impacted the Greenwood's so much, that Mrs. Greenwood never recovered. Such a good one. Too bad they never knew who did this terrible thing. Thanks Brief Case!

Such a tragic case! Too bad there wasn't fingerprint technology then (I believe it would be several decades later). Luckily, Mrs. Greenwood wasn't murdered! The letter was definitely a lure to get Mr. Greenwood from the home. Mary Jane obviously knew who it was to let him in, and when she asked him to leave, he killed her. I believe the person wanted to take advantage of Mary Jane with her employer out the house. Enthralling narration as usual. Look forward to your next installment, Brief Case!❤

As u say,fingerprints tech wasn't really known then.But I watched a Bonanza episode recently where one of the boys was accused of murder & Hop Sing explained about all prints being different.Something the Chinese had known about for centuries.

The way you say "Mr. Cooper" is exactly how I say it whenever I see the name on caller ID. (Mr. Cooper is the name of a mortgage company)

Brief, you are beginning this story with the innocent one. Not the one who committed the crime. To me, this is another way you keep telling interesting stories. I need to pay attention to your story telling to comprehend the whole of what you are saying. Good stuff. Thanks
