Forest Haven was a state school for children and adults with intellectual disability (ID) located in Laurel, Maryland and operated by the District of Columbia. The site was opened in 1925 and closed on October 14, 1991, by order of a federal judge after years of alleged abuse, medical incompetence, and several deaths...

That Forest Haven video from several years ago has always haunted me in a certain way… especially knowing that those were ACTUALLY screams of terror Sam and Colby caught on tape, not just kids fooling around. I’m glad this is finally getting somewhat of a revisit!

@@MattRobertsonArt Maybe most people would not run towards the screams... its still a failure on their part. They showed cowardice in a moment that they may have been able to do something. I'd feel guilty and like I failed if that were me... and its very possible I would have done the same thing as them a few years ago. I can only hope that who I am today is capable of understanding that those screams were real and that I had an opportunity to save someone.

This video has done two good things. One is it has helped make it so that the patients who suffered and died in these institutions, did not do so in vain. This was done by helping educate the public of the history of the institutions and hopefully helping avoid a repeat in history. Secondly, this video bring awareness of the need to better address these invisible diseases. Mental health affects more people than you can imagine and our societies need to put more focus upon this issue. Intentional or not, this is awesome work Josh.

I worked at foxboro and wrentham state schools back in late 80s the stories omfg…horrifying …foxboro is now apartments, a friend and i saw people outside stopped and asked hey do you think this building is haunted? The looks on their faces said all, they had no clue it was a former state school dormitory nor that tunnels run under..used to be a haunted attraction back in the late 80s and early 90s…ik you know these places josh..your close by! Love from Attleboro

It wasn't just advances in medicines that caused the majority of mental institutions to shut down. It was also the realization of many patients not belonging there due to being admitted from misdiagnosed or falsely diagnosed illnesses, as well as the realization that the environment of the institutions themselves were exacerbating many of the patient's conditions. Governments also didn't like the cost of running the institutions and being that they never privatized, means that they were not capable of being profitable.

The psychiatric hospital i worked in had a small, 4 person, morgue in the basement. I worked Palliative care on the second floor. Only once did I escort a body and sadly, it was in a normal elevator, down a hall, then down another elevator to the tunnels. The nurse said, 'her eyes are closed, it looks like she is sleeping so that's all anyone would think". Now when I am in any hospital, when I see a person sleeping and being wheeled by me, I look at their chest.

I'm so weirdly happy to see you went here Josh! My mom was a patient there when I believe she was a teenager because she had epilepsy all her life. Back when she went which might've been close to the 80's. she went there for a procedure. Not to try to invite myself to things but if you do end up going there again for either exploring or a ghost hunt and want to bring a fan along, I volunteer! It would be like a weird sense of closure to me. Happy to talk further about that in private. Great video as always! LOVE YOUR FACE!

I have a son with down syndrome and I was born blind. Back then we likely would've been in places like this. It's horrid to think someone as amazing as my little boy suffered such horrible atrocities. It's heart breaking. I was told by many I could put him in a home bc I was 17 with a child with mental and physical disabilities and the thought just horrified me. Idc what was considered the norm. This is disgusting. They didn't put kids here for the kids well being. They put them here to hide them from society. Disgusting! I was sent to a government ran facility for kids with disabilities and suffered nothing like this and still left traumatized. I just can't even imagine. This place deserves to be destroyed! Something put up in dedication explaining what was done to them.

I hate the fact that places like this existed. I've seen way too many documentaries about different ones. So gut wrenching knowing how those children were being treated. I did volunteer work as a teenager in a home for ppl with pretty severe disabilities. There were both adults and children living there. I'm so thankful that the place I worked at was nothing like any of those. The residents were treated with kindness & I felt honored to be there.

I applaud you for using stealth! Too many of these videos show explorers yelling screaming and making all kinds of noises! You are very wise to avoid other explorers! You never know who is out there! You cold be robbed, beaten or even killed! That's one reason why I don't explore by myself anymore. If you hurt your self there is no one to help you but if you are robbed and beaten, maybe stabbed you could die out there and it could be weeks or even months before someone finds your body. So again I applaud you for being cautious, quiet and smart in your explorations in this place and other places. Be safe!

You got the date it was abandoned wrong. It was abandoned on October 14th in 1991 not 1971. My grandparents went there as a kid and I heard many stories about the life style. Even though they were there for 8 months they still came out different from how they went in. My grandmother has told me many stories about what they had done and how she was treated. It’s crazy how they thought they were doing the right thing.

Dude, love your exploring haunted places. Just started watching your videos. You are loco, but awesome. Did anyone see that shadow as soon as he walked in that room and saw that "adult baby crib," it freaked me out. That shadow could be a ghost or could be a person.. OMG! Scared the crap out of me

Honestly? For a foreigner it is so cool seeing this and get the clips you've put in on how it looked back then and getting some history to this place as well. I mean I don't need a lecture about everything that went down there, but seeing and knowing the most important events that happened really helps to understand! Thank you for that, you really have a perfect mix of fun and facts!

So scary doing it on your own, Josh. Good explore, but I was anxious as I watched it.

Really good explore Josh. The place looks an Urbexxers dream. The sound was fine without the mic mate, don’t stress it.

Great explore. Fascinating place. Spooked me a bit at around 12.56. Something at the very far end of the corridor moved across from right to left. Having watched it a few times I don't think it is anything, but gave me the chills to start with.

It's funny how you mention the colour of the tiles. In scary movies, the walls are also green. Even interrogation cells are almost always a greenish colour. Another great video. Thanks Josh! 💜🖤

I wish I knew you were coming here. I would love to give you a tour. All the underground tunnels, something’s that are hard to find. I know these buildings inside and out. I believe I even emailed you about this place.

Absolutely heartbreaking. The people that harm defenseless people should be given life in prison and never ever go free. They don't deserve freedom.

Sad to hear about the things that went on here and happy this place no longer exists except in ruins. Thanks for exploring and sharing the history behind these abandoned places for which a lot of us would know nothing about or that these places ever even existed.
