as a summary (and from what little i know of the musical), the protagonist is a General, just having conquered a major city and eliminated its ruler (Prince Hector). A god comes to him and says he needs to kill the Prince's infant son, or else the child will grow up and seek revenge on the protagonist's family (most notably, his wife Penelope) several years later. So the protagonist feels torn about whether to kill this baby in order to save his wife and child, or let the baby live and know that his family will face a horrible death in the future.

Greeks really love that generational conflict. Though honestly often notice that most of the time the conflict exists because the individual gives into the fear of the next generation. Cronus gives in and eats his kids leading to Zeus having to fight to save his siblings, Oedipus was abandoned leading to him killing his dad who Oedipus assumed was just a rude stranger, Achrisius locks his daughter in a tower leading her to eventually birth a demigod hero. And I wonder here if Odysseus did just bring the child in then maybe he could have avoided blood on his hands in general. Generational conflict in Greece feels like a self fulfilling prophecy and is only fated to happen because people believe it will and do something that guarantees it will

He does. In the story, he’s told by the gods that it’s either the baby or Odysseus and his family/kingdom, so he ultimately chooses to throw the baby off the side of the balcony
