A couple of things that are not often mentioned when talking about Art Deco is that the style was also a reaction to a previous one, namely Art Nouveau: that style was very ornated with a lot of shapes inspired by nature, plants, flowers (which itself was a reaction to more traditional 19th Century styles). Art Deco broke away from this by simplifying everything and introducing sharp straight lines and geometry. And this was very much inspired by African design styles, patterns, motifs and materials, to give a flair of luxury and exoticism. This is where all the Art Deco wallpaper patterns and gold details come from for example.
@nellel25543 жыл бұрын
Very cool. Thanks for sharing!
@eljaykayaye11863 жыл бұрын
Art Nouveau broke away also, inspired by Japanese woodblock and trade with Asia, Egypt etc. Globalism is not new just tech advanced. The trade routes, we were always exchanging, borrowing, merging ideas even if not openly. Not saying this always went smoothly. 🤔
@beckerderbacker49763 жыл бұрын
Art Nouveau was also very organic and feminine and was sort of the last hurrah of the Gilded Age. Art Deco embraced industry, progress, a search for a new future not defined by the decadence of the 19th century--but ironically, decadent in its own way.

Thank you for mentioning the sustainability side of maximalism! As someone who has studied art, I’ve always loved the layering of multiple textures, colors, and patterns, but was hesitant to call myself a maximalist due to the negative stereotypes. I’ve made an effort to curate my pieces and buy vintage or used when possible, so it’s great to see the recognition that you can have a maximalist aesthetic without contributing to overconsumption.
@Nick_Lewis3 жыл бұрын
Definitely an important part of that style for sure.

@katherineparis82083 жыл бұрын
I also want to clarify that my definition of maximalism may be slightly different than the actual technical definition. While I love the aesthetic of mixing multiple textures, design styles, colors, and patterns, I still try to only purchase items that I either need for a practical purpose or (for my art or purely decorative pieces) that I know I will love and enjoy for years to come, and I choose invest in “fewer, nicer things”. I love that even without a ton of individual items you can create a very maximalist space by choosing a couple of statement pieces that contrast in style, texture, size, or color. I think that maximalism can be overwhelming and go pretty extreme, but that it can be implemented with many other design styles by just “turning up” the contrast a little.
@Draggonny3 жыл бұрын
@@katherineparis8208 He chose his examples of maximalism wisely. So many maximalists have so many clashing, bright colours and patterns it makes your eyes want to bleed but his examples were bold, statement pieces tied together through colour palette or shape. Loud but not aggressive.

Hearing Nick mention that there's such thing as “our own signature style” is removing a heavy weight on my shoulders at the moment. I find it hard to renovate without a designer to guide my choices... Hopefully, thanks to this channel i master the basic concepts and feel more confident in my expenses. (For example, i've FINALLY bought a new lamp yesterday that i've been loving for weeks, to go over my antique dining table. It's a designer's "modern interpretation of a classic silhouette." Based on the pictures you're showing, one of the differences between Japandi and Warm Minimalist is material. Japandi leans into natural material or natural textures, while wam minimalist has more metal and even surfaces. Moreover, Japandi design is "down to earth", literally. Furniture are low and hug the ground and most have no legs/clearance underneath. This is echoes traditional Japanese lifestyle: you sit on the ground, eat on the gound, occasionally cook on the ground (floor hearth), and sleep on the ground. The floors are straw-based tatami, which means any furniture with legs would damage it overtime.

Personally I prefer the blend of warm and cool neutrals blended together in aesthetically pleasing ways.people considering “maximalism” need to consider the longevity and upkeep, cleaning, of having many objects around. It is possible to have a maximal sensory experience without clutter depending on the colors, textures, and geometries of what you choose.
@zakosist2 жыл бұрын
I think I already kind of did maximalism style before knowing what it it, at least I have a lot of different decor I show of. Lots of different colors withing it too. Mostly paintings (many I actually painted myself), some posters and small sculptures, I think they go well together and is sort of "intentionally messy". I also got an aquarium last year and that adds some work of course. But I dont think there is a lot of extra cleaning with that style. There is some dust collection over time but that isn't overly visible and very quick to clean anyway. Longlivety isn't really an issue, I think those objects can last for many years. Furniture will probably wear at the same pace regardless of your style. Actual clutter comes mostly from food (including the container) and secondary clothes. My home is honestly never perfectly tidy (but also nowhere near what you see on some extreme hoarder pictures), but I do clean up on a regular basis and have mostly clear floor space

You could maybe try to do different rooms in different styles but keep the colour palette cohesive throughout your entire home? Or keep the colour palette not entirely cohesive and have one extra colour "allowed" in specific rooms and give a bit of a bigger nod or focus to one style in each space. Lets say you like red and want it to be a main theme: red and pink palette could make for a really nice cosy and textured maximalist art deco bedroom, while a more minimalist living room could be done in a warm beige and red, with some intentional japandi choices and one post modern center piece. Maybe the other way around with a minimalist calm sleeping space and an inspiring maximalist living room would suit your needs and personality more?

I love you how you break it all down and used words like 'hearken' ;)

oh my gosh... i hope art deco does come back! But I think that it's best for public places and not into the home because I get the impression that if a home's interior design is art deco styled that it would get old fast? Either way, it's gorgeous! It's like the entire space is art and lux.

When you said Art Deco I had a major OF COURSE moment. I've been trying to figure out what I have been seeing on Pinterest and thinking about while redesigning my own room because I like midcentury modern but there is definitely a distinct new Thing I've been gravitating toward and boom it's totally art deco.

I just love ya, Nick and could watch you all day. The Japandi and Art Deco descriptions were so informative and inspirational! Thank you for taking the time to go into such great detail of all the "trends." I try not to be overly "trendy", mostly because I've inherited so much of what I own, but I do live in the world and am influenced by the era I live in just like everyone else; so I live for and love to see what is current! Thanks again!

I’m lucky to have some authentic art deco pieces from when my grandparents were newly weds in the 1930s. I hope I’ll be able to integrate them into the decor of my new country house.

Great video! 13:35 the mauve/pink color of the walls is my bedroom (Benjamin Moore “Hidden Sanctuary”), which I compliment with eggplant, lilac, burgundy, and antique walnut (shade) bedroom furniture, a John Singer Sargent portrait painting (“Lady Agnew of Lochnaw” which haunts me with its stunning beauty), and another Victorian painting, all in appropriate period frames. So I’m combining Victorian and cozy minimalism. When I get my own apartment, rather than this house, I want to do that combo throughout the whole place. (I discovered, I love the Victorian florals on black backgrounds…very sumptuous.)

We're about to begin a reno of our unit. Thoughts on the longevity of navy blue kitchen cabinets? Gold or bronze hardware in kitchens or bathrooms?
