I think your tomatoes may do better being in full sun out of the poly tunnel-there may be too much moisture/humidity in there for them. You planted so much, next year spread them out and plant less-your tomatoes will be bigger and less trouble once you prune them. I love your toilet and basin-they'll look great in your new place. Have a great week!

Not sure if someone has said but it most likely is botrytis mould. Usually caused by poor circulation and the plants staying wet for too long. So lack of morning sun which would dry the dew from the plants and too much humidity being in the greenhouse. Greenhouses where there is little airflow/breeze and too much moisture leads to this as well. So having the greenhouse in full sun with the sides rolled up or a fan going would definitely help. With all the trees around the greenhouse this would also create less airflow. Tomatoes need full sun, lots of airflow, watering from the ground (not on the plants themselves) a good soaking via a soaker hose over night once a week is better then little regular waterings. Some people find adding a bit of epsom salt to your water when you water them helps with the magnesium/calcium balance for the plants. Hope this is helpful

You are right about the tomatoes suffering from an excess of humidity, lack of sun. Avoid watering the tomato leaves- water the base of the plants,- on sunny days. If possible, an oscillating fan , even if at night for short stretches might do the trick. The house is going to be magnificent.

It looks like blight, very difficult to get rid of do not put the leaves or affected plants in your compost. You can spread it just by touching and attacks peppers potato and anything in the same family. When watering do not wet the leaves, you need to give the plants a lot of space. Next year try to buy seeds that are blight resistant and do not plant in the same place.☹️

There are some vegetables that do ok in part shade like peas, radish and lettuce. Google for more. You could have the children help in the garden for an hour or so then spend time with them on holidays maybe. They are such gorgeous children. Good find with the bathroom ware Wilfred. If you buy a wood fired oven look for one that heats water as well, plus a warming for PJ's in the winter season. The ash will be great for the garden. You might be able to harvest the wild oregano seeds and throw them in other areas to cut and come again.

Hi, the tomatoes look like they have blight. You said it was hot rainy hot rainy this could have caused high humidity in the tunnel and caused the blight to begin. You may need to improve air flow in the tunnel and also do not water the plants water the plants at the roots. Water early in the morning only and do not over water. You are doing the right thing by cutting away the diseased leaves do not panic the plant can lose 30% of it's leaves and survive. Sterilise your tools and wash hands prior to touching treated plants. Dispose of diseased leaves in bin off property do not put in compost. You must rotate the area next season so no tomatoes in the greenhouse. There are lots of treatments I suggest follow the local knowledge. Good luck following you all from Australia.

Hey it's all a learning curve. You should be soooo proud of all you've achieved so far it's amazing. The tomatoes had a great start not enough calcium does lead to the bottom of the tomatoes going black but i don't see that. It does look like mould/mildew a treatment of,'Bouillie Bordelaise' i use here in France (french- google translate perhaps) uses for fruit trees vines & nuts also. This is a great homemade concoction for calcium not only for tomatoes but for most veg it's essential - save all your egg shells wash & dry them, pop them in a blender until a fine powder, pop into a good sized bowl add a couple of tablespoons of cheap white/clear vinegar. It will froth & react with the egg shell to release the calcium. Give it 20 mins & then add a couple of scoops to a full watering can & apply to soil (the vinegar does no harm & will be well diluted) Voila . I hope this helps. Revel in your successes ❤ Thanks for sharing....beautiful familly.

And that is the trouble with solar power. It's dependent on the sun shining all the time, and that just isn't how life is. It's a similar issue with your tomatoes. They have to have much more light or they will not thrive. This leaves them susceptible to disease. You live and learn and guys, you are so very young still. You have a lot of living and learning to do and you will 'get there' because you are determined and have a great work ethic.

GARDENING!! Am currently bingeing on what is now my favourite KZbin channel - just loving following you guys and am sooooo envious of your fabulous property - it's sheer heaven!! I'm commenting here because of your late tomato blight - a disease that can strike at any time and is caused by soil living pathogens which have been transported by insects and birds. This is one of the reasons I keep advising people, regardless of the vegetable in question, is to mulch, mulch, mulch! There's no cure for late blight but you can spray with hydrogen peroxide (3% solution) - it's just water with an additional oxygen element, so it's safe and organic. It can be kept in the house for first aid purposes as it's not only antifungal, it's antibacterial too. To prevent the spread of diseases, always keep you garden shears and knives etc clean - again HO2 will do the trick. Apart from mulching to prevent the spread of pathogens there's a few more things you can do for late blight - don't water your leaves, get really good air flow in your poly tunnel - lift the plastic skirt up if you can, or create flaps all along the base that you can roll up, because preventing moisture build up is important, and this goes for most plants. And don't water veggies from above - always at ground level. Now, back to mulching - it not prevents those pathogens from being splashed up, it suppresses weeds, conserves precious water, regulates soil temperature, prevents soil being blown or washed away, and feeds soil life. As you'll have seen on your beautiful walks, Nature never leaves her soil uncovered - she's constantly adding to the compost that forms in her forests and meadows - she feed the soil , not the plants - it's the soil life of microbes, bacteria, fungi and worms etc that feed our plants. I'm a 76 year old organic gardener originally from England but now in Australia, and have grown in various climates - this advice applies no matter where you live or what you grow. The best mulch is a 2" layer of compost as slugs are not attracted and if course, there's nothing better to feed the soil, but leaves or straw are good too - I use chopped sugar cane. Avoid hay as it's usually full of seeds and weeds. The only addition I make to my soil apart from adding compost on top each year is a sprinkling of chicken manure pellets - I don't ever need to fertilise - I just improve the soil. Never use fresh chook poo as it'll burn your plants - add it to your compost heap! That goes for any other waste - so please don't listen to people about egg shells, coffee grounds, fish heads and banana skins - get the most out of them by composting because it's absolutely teaming with life! If you ever get the time (I can hear you laughing) - check out Charles Dowding's channel. Oh, and don't break your back digging - you're not only destroying the soil life web beneath your feet, but it creates a haven for weeds. Nature doesn't disturb her soil - she just drops stuff on top and let's the life beneath do all the work - easy as! Phew! Sorry that was so long, but I hope you will consider taking some of it on board when you come to starting your new veggie patch. Lay down cardboard ahead of time to kill the weeds then start adding organic matter on top to build your beds, finishing off with that 2" of yummy compost! A couple of tips: plant beans, peas and carrots directly in the soil. Lettuces and most brassicas don't like too much sun - dappled or afternoon shade is good, or plant between rows of corn. Plant corn in blocks and fairly close as pollination relies on the breeze. When sowing carrots water very gently afterwards then cover with a plank until they germinate and have grown a bit - 1 to 2 weeks. They'll look a bit weedy but will soon bounce back. Absolutely love how you grew the cress - I used to collect it from the edge of a stream when I was a child. All the best - even I'm excited for you all on this fabulous journey in this wonderful region - keep those videos coming. Love seeing the kids having a childhood like mine, and esp to see things like your youngest whittling with a knife - we seem to have forgotten how to trust our children - even if they do pull off your magnolia branches!! Their life is idyllic - well done to Mum 'n' Dad! Hugs from Oz.

The tomatoes have too much humidity in the tunnel. They like hot dry heat. Don’t plant them in there again as it looks like blight. Great job on clearing your land !!

It does look like blight. Try growing tomatoes out of the tunnel. Air circulation around the plants is critically important. You should have plenty of warmth where you live to grow them without a tunnel.

Think green! You need a robust wood chipper/shredder. Mulch with wood chips. It suppresses weeds and puts the carbon back in the soil. Burning wood puts CO2 back in the air. I believe it’s the way of the future..you have a dream property!

Weel, it is clearly time. Time to seriously consider getting a small diesel tractor. You have more than enough land that you can use the help a sub-compact or compact, like, for example, Kubota B01. Bugs: first off, you need some ants near your garden. Ants are one of the best bug controls you can use. Yes, they will install aphids, but they grow aphids. They won’t put so many on as to harm the plant. They will also keep a lot of other bugs off your plants. Also, diluted dish soap will strongly discourage most other insects. Healthy plants will resist almost any and all fungus. Almost. Healthy plants begin with healthy soil. Your soil has been neglected for a long time. Likely you need to begin with a structural reformation. Native soils support native plants. You are growing garden plants, they require a different structure. Charcoal: garden soil benefits enormously from charcoal. You should be able to buy good clear charcoal like they use in charcoal grills. Not briquettes. But hard wood charcoal. Break it into little flakes and mix with your soil, it needs to go at least 12” down, so a good bit of graft. In the end, you want to see some charcoal in every handful of soil. When the soil is damp, grab a handful and make a tight fist, open you hand and you should have a ped, a small formed blob. That ped should break into chunks when you touch it. If it crumbles to sand, then you need some clay (rock dust, you can get it from rock quarries that make gravel, sifting the gravel out leaves the rock fines). If the ped dries quickly you need to add organics: compost, grass clippings, rotted wood, etc. This is the basic of soil structure. When weeding, you can lay the pulled weeds on the surface of the garden bed around your plants to retain moisture and add organics. Also, household compostables can be added directly to your garden beds, bury them 6-12 inches deep. Just weed before the weed goes to seed. top dressing your growing beds with vegetable meal, canola, alfalfa, etc,,provide slow release balanced feed. Things like chicken manure are higher in nitrogen and need to balanced with “brown” organics (organics that have dried and turned brown, rather than green). For example, can be top dressed on top of pulled weeds. Planting: every plant has a root depth. You can plant things together if they have different root depths. Raspberries and mint for example.

If it’s calcium they are lacking, you can use egg shells and put them in a food processor with a bit of water and whisk them into a smush, dilute with water. Also to help ripen the tomatoes you can leave banana skins on the ground around the plants.

Gardens are certainly worth the effort, but effort is needed! You might want to start your next planting off by putting down weed cloth; it will prevent weeds growing up between your plants (you burn or cut holes in the cloth where you want to plant something...). That will save you a lot of weeding work, and prevent your plants from needing to compete for nutrients.
@THESCOTTERS
@THESCOTTERS Жыл бұрын
Yes they definitely are a lot of effort but worth it as you say looking forward to having a little more time to put in to it ☺️ great idea about the weed cloth we will definitely do that!
