Honestly when will that man child of a Pres. Step down from office? This has gone on more than long enough for us all to know he needs removed before he causes irreprible harm to our nation. I am sick of that oompa loompa stroking his own ego and having little to know understanding of how politics work and a country should run. For now he has imposed nepotism, lies, and too much focus on his social media to even have me believe he is capable of any real work.

We knew what that slob was like well-before he became a candidate. The other presidents we found out about after they were elected ... I didn't know that Jefferson bedded at least one of his slaves and had multiple children with her. Oh, but that wasn't against the law back in them thar good ole daze, eh! I wonder if I was born and raised in those times if I would have still thought such behavior was wrong - especially if I was the wife of that president.

Jefferson was a widower at the time. As for other people, if we'd been born in that time, we probably wouldn't have thought terribly much about it. My guess is that die-hard abolitionists would have been upset, but most of us, having been raised in that environment, would have thought, well, it's one of those weird Southern things, and hey, he doubled the size of the country, so we'll just look the other way. There is a possibility that they felt some real affection for each other -- the problem being, of course, that we'll never know if she ever just wanted to walk away, because she didn't have the option.

Actually when Jefferson was envoy to France, they lived together over there along with Sally's brother James (who was Jefferson's chef). Because under French law at the time, slavery was illegal, so Sally had the option of remaining in France and gaining her freedom. However, she was pregnant with Jefferson's child at the time, and she agreed to return with him to America if he promised to free their children once they reached the age of 21. I'm not sure if there was a real affection, or if Sally wanted to avoid being a single mother in France without support (and never see her mother and siblings again), but she did technically choose to go back with him. Doesn't make it right. Disturbing fact, Sally Hemings was actually the younger half-sister of Jefferson's dead wife Martha. Jefferson sort of kept his promise to Sally, though his daughter Beverly was 24 before she was sent to live in the free North, followed by her sister Harriet. The two girls declared themselves as white and married in high society. His sons Madison and Eston were freed and married free women of color, and Eston changed his name to Eston Jefferson. All four were educated as children and even given violin lessons. Their son's would later fight in the Union army during the Civil War; where Madison's son Thomas was captured and died at the infamous Andersonville POW camp.
