Hyundai's quest for constant improvement means that it's set a high bar for itself with the third generation version of its smallest car, the i10. Jonathan Crouch drives the revised version.
Ten Second Review
We're going to see far fewer citycars on the market in the coming years, which is welcome news for Hyundai, who has reaffirmed its commitment to the segment by introducing this third generation version of its popular i10 tiny hatch. It's billed as the most hi-tech citycar ever.
Background
Sometimes, the stars just align perfectly for a car manufacturer. Such was the case back in 2009 when two largely unrelated circumstances coincided. The introduction of the government's Scrappage Scheme saw a number of tired old cars being taken off our roads and resulted in a commensurate quantity of buyers with a modest sum of cash in their hands looking for something to buy. Fairly new onto the market and having just replaced the underwhelming Amica was the rather appealing Hyundai i10. Sales skyrocketed and for a short while, the i10 was the country's best selling car. It didn't last. While i10 sales continued quite strongly, the end of the Scrappage Scheme saw buyers return to their usual buying habits.
Since then, Hyundai has tried hard to keep citycar buyers interested. It rejuvenated the i10 in second generation form in 2013, but it still didn't quite have the quality or the fashionable appeal of rivals like the Volkswagen up!, Skoda Citigo and SEAT Mii triplets. But this MK3 version, launched in 2019, has done better and here, has been usefully upgraded.

Popular i10?! I’ve never knew these still existed!! The i20 in Australia is even discontinued, I thought the i10 would have no chance of selling. The i30 is the only “i” models of cars being sold in Australia, and it does quite well in selling!

I have owned both the i10 and the Suzuki Ignis. The Ignis is by far the better car,even if some people don't like it's looks. Far roomier, much better mpg, and totally reliable. It's quirky looks won me over. Who needs all the hi tech, in a small city car?

I own a second generation 1.2 SE 2018 model year and I am pleased with it. However, I woulde gladly trade the rear electric windows for an intermittent rear wiper and some rear coat hooks!

We wanted the N Line i10 and ordered one last month, however Hyundai sneakily dropped the power to 90ps despite the UK website mentioning 99bhp four times in the main description. It was only when you built the car in the configuration that the reduced engine output was shown. I called two dealers who appeared unaware of the change and Hyundai UK did not get back to me! It was only when I emailed Hyundai UK and explained they were misleading with their description that by the evening they had radically changed the description and removed all references to the original engine and its perky performance. We have ordered the i10 N Line and can only presume it’s the emissions pressure that has forced them to surreptitiously handicap the prime feature of the “sporty” model!

You could factor in an extra £299 and have it re mapped. Completely undetectable unless a full on forensic look at the ecu. We had a 2017 kia rio 1.0turbo with 99bhp. 1 remap later and with 140bhp it was the car it should have been, pulled so much stronger in 2nd and 3rd gear, also had no negative affect on the mpg.

It’s for my wife who’s a gentle driver. It’s not a massive reduction and maybe they’ve rebalanced the torque and gearing. Every bhp counts at this level though. I just think it’s underhand of them and I don’t know how long ago the change was made as I can’t find any auto sites mentioning it in the news.

@joe80ss the ignis is not under the same category or size as the i10. Cimpare it with the picanto, vw up and peugeot 108 and similars but not with the ignis or the aygox. Completely different cars, designed for different purposes

They don't seem to be making much effort...no manufacturers deposit contributions at all..... My daughter ended up getting the new Clio!

The road tax on the 1litre auto start/stop is £190. Very very slow and poor MPG. A disappointing car compared to a Corsa.
