He played 90 minutes out of position. He effed up the team's balance by not playing on the wing where he should have been. Every time a teammate got the ball and looked to pass it to him in his normal position, he'd gone AWOL, having not got back from some little adventure into someone else's area of the pitch. He didn't stick to his position and he didn't stick to his assigned role. If he'd played on the right wing, like he was supposed to, England would have won at a canter. Greece had never even scored against us from open play before that match, but the unbalance caused by Beckham being out of position gifted Greece two goals.

At the time a lot of people were still a bit bitter towards him after the Argentina red card in 98 (myself included, still a fickle teenager at the time). This was the game that cemented with the fans that they had to put that behind them. Previously there were suggestions he was more interested in being a celebrity and took his talent for granted. His passion and determination in this game showed everyone there was nobody more committed to their football and to the england team than he was. And how valuable he was.

@@alkaholic4848This recent Beckham documentary reminded me how bad it really was for him for a while after 98 Lmao. My cousin influenced me into absolutely despising the man as a young kid, didn’t even fully watch the bloody Argentina game I was out back playing football myself 😂. 2002 however I was sat for each match England played and Beckham’s effort alone won me over. he had too few guys show up that year for sure

Players that attained the status of "legends" tended to be the ones that worked hardest. Beckham and Cantona would practice free kicks when everyone else had gone home. At Scunthorpe Kevin Keegan would do the same sort of thing in order to improve because he knew there were parts of his game he needed to improve.
@Cefdfsacq5 жыл бұрын
I think it was universally accepted that he was an incredible long field passer and set piece guy. You brits should have played him in the middle. Every time I saw him play there he dominated long stretches of the match. He was such a team guy that he acquiesced when they narrowly Defined his role. Overrated? Beckham was underrated. With the clock ticking.....the toughest pretty boy in any sport

I remember this being one of the first games I watched in the pub with some friends. Greece were excellent the whole game. Very strong on the tackles and brilliantly well organised though they gave away a lot of free kicks which is where Becks was such a powerhouse. It was just that touch of class from a couple of players that made the difference to Englands comeback. Definitely one of my all time favourite games!
