The idea behind "Rare" skins is misguided

there was a skin called the singularity and to unlock it you needed 90 fortbytes so basically 90 quests, then to unlock the full armour 100 fortbytes, and the extra colours required doing even more quests. i think this skin would count as a rare skin since you had to have dedication to go do all the quests.

I had FOMO up until Chapter 2 season 1. Before that season I ended up unlocking literally every single battle pass skin. Then when C2S1 came out,I ended up missing out on the Scratch skin's "fully corrupted" style and I was bummed for a minute ,but eventually I realized it was a blessing because I no longer felt the need to have the perfect locker. I mean, I still unlocked every BP skin after that, but their superstyles were no longer a priority.

I think the one exception to what you said is omega with the lights Omega with the lights was not just “oh I played in season 4 and got tier 100 in the battle pass” omega with the lights was “I had the dedication to play so much fortnite that I got to level 80 when almost nobody else did” Technically it’s not skill related but I consider it a true flex because it was so hard to do (I don’t have omega with lights but I have carbide with lights)

Dead by daylight is a very good example. There are skins called legacy they were acquired by grinding the old blood web in 2016 it costed 50 mil just to get through one blood web I believe. Something happened were a lot of people lost there files so the devs suggested too have back up files. This didn’t really help so if you lost these skins in grinding that means they could not do anything to recover them. There are other skins or cosmetic pieces for individual killers and survivors that are” very rare” but they decided to give some of those to the community.

Leveling the battle pass chapter one was a lot harder then doing it now. Now it tells you where everything is. Now I complete all weekly quests in an hour. It also depends on what battle pass skin. Like for example omega, the omega skin isn’t much of an achievement. But maxing out the skin to get the lights was almost impossible to get. So some one who has the omega lights had to really work hard to get them. I wouldn’t call them rare skins, but definitely a challenge to complete

Geralt was kind of a pain in the butt to get if you were only playing the game casually until this point. Eventually, they gave it to everyone who had the battle pass due to an error in quest coding iirc -- my first thought wasn't "BRO THEY GAVE IT TO EVERYONE" but more like "i cant believed i busted my own balls for 3 hours straight for something that i would've gotten anyway 😿"

My first ever skin was Drift. And is by far my favorite skin. However, that account is on the family PS4 account when I was little. So, now older with my own account after 3 years of not playing Fortnite and account merging not being a thing I can never really play my favorite skin. I see where it's exclusive argument has valid points but to me I always find that players would be more happy and Epic would make a lot more money if old BP skins were purchasable. Destiny 2 for example has had battlepasses for a decent while now and I have a handful of the first batch of the exclusive ornaments/skins from the first couple of seasons. Recently they did in fact release a bundle that included the ornament/skin set from the third season BP they made. The bundle was kind of poopy for the price but I saw a lot of positive feedback of D2 bringing back old ornaments/skins.

I think it only works that way assuming the person who wears the skin has actually actively played from every season from that point. I know a few people with Reapers in their locker who only played for a few seasons then quit and then came back a few chapters later. (or sometimes, quit altogether) so it's hard to tell whether they really played super long or just only played during that specific time frame.

the only skins/styles i would truly consider to be "Rare" are things that required an extra unlock condition beyond simply Battle Pass Progress Say for example secret skins, Visitor and such, where you had to do all the weekly challenges from the first 7 or so weeks, or maxed styles of stuff like Omega or Singularity where you had to get to Level 80 in Season 4, or collect all 100 Fortbytes in Season 9

Plus they aren't really rare when you are able to possibly just buy someone's account that is selling it, even though they don't allow it some people still get around that. Unavailable skins are only really "rare" in the sense that they're desirable because they haven't been available in a long time, they're essentially just a statement of when you've played, and invested money in the game. A skin can be considered rare because of several different reasons. For example, when it was last available, how it's obtained, or how difficult it is to obtain it. Agent Peely's golden agent style is a good example of a skin that's considered rare because of how difficult it was to obtain. Reaching 300 levels in any season isn't easy. At the end of the day though, they are all just cosmetics. They only hold as much value as you allow them to.

At this point I would want Epic to just release old battle pass skins, if people want to show their og status just use umbrellas if they care that much. I agree with you that outfits don’t really mean anything other then them being rare, but the reason they have so much value is due to the same reason pawn shops and auctions are still in business. Yes they’re meaningless in an objective way of looking at it. So why do people value them? This is probably one of the most even mannered reasonable sounding videos / takes on skin rarity that I've ever seen on this platform. It's very refreshing and I can relate to 90% of what you say. I like skins only because I like what they look like and I don't really care whether they're still obtainable, or haven't been in the shop for a long time or even have been blacklisted. I'm sure the comment section is going to be riddled with people talking about the skins that required more effort than just completing levels, but at the end of the day, it really just boils down to you played the game, you got the skin, if someone else didn't, so what? I skipped a lot of battle passes just because I simply didn't like the items in it, the ones that I completed were more because I had a lot of free time to fill, but definitely not so a few years down the road I can parade around in front of other people at party Royale to show them what they can't get. I know you mentioned that people aren't necessarily toxic about skin ownership and other cosmetics and emotes, but definitely there is a large percentage of people that are. I've been in lobby with people all they talk about the entire game is how they have this skin and how the other people in the group are trash because they don't. It's kind of sad. I've seen people who wear a certain skin for ages that hasn't been in the item shop for a while and then all of a sudden it comes back, and all of a sudden they never wave it again. What changed? Nothing, nothing at all, I personally wouldn't care if they brought back any battle pins that I have and put them in the item shop like a lot of people would. If I have it, I'll be happy that other people will get an opportunity to enjoy it as well, if I don't, it's probably because I didn't want it in the first place. Cosmetics should be about the wearer, not everybody else. If more people understood thatthey would enjoy the game a lot more and worry a lot less about what they think other people are thinking about them and their locker size/rarity.

I feel like Omega is the only tier 100 who really does matter because the other ones were just getting xp or getting to outlast opponents a certain number of times, don't get me wrong, it did require you to get xp to get his styles and lights but for him, it took a lot of playing to earn his styles while for other tier 100s, you just had to get xp and even if you didn't complete the skin during that season, you could complete it next season anyway (which btw, was a great feature). But that's just my take on this problem.

I got his full armor but never managed to get his lights. I would say getting his helmet was a miracle, I started on Week 4 or 5 of season 4 and it was a massive grind to reach level 100 back then, I think the only reason I even got to his helmet at level 55 or something was because I played a LOT with people who had the 125% XP boost... sure, I wish I had the lights but y'know. it was basically impossible for me.

I sort of agree however, I’d say that there is at least 1 more skin that could be considered hard to get from an early battlepass: ragnarok, for context the Xp needed for omega’s maxed out lights was around 532000 XP to get to it’s final state, however with ragnarok you would need 500000 XP for it’s final stage with his glowing skull, this makes me think that even if it was easier to get ragnarok it would still show a lot of effort being put in to accuire the final level of the skin just like omega did

I had a conversation with my friend when red knight came out and even though I wanted since I was 12 I didn't buy it. Talked about how people only wanted that skin because it was rare and not that it actually looked good, paying 20$ worth of V-Bucks for that and got RDR2 on steam in stead. When that "rare" skin re-releases, it isn't cool anymore. This is what happened with skull trooper, and this is why nobody wears it. People let rarity of skins cloud their mind when nobody cares, not gonna stare at your renegade raider skin i'm gonna shoot it to win the game. That simple. Ironically enough to the point I argued, if dark knight released i'd buy it.

@@NitroMatti I'm kicking myself for not getting V bucks in season 1, because I got a PlayStation gift card, and I ended up getting need for speed 2015 (absolutely terrible game) with it instead of V bucks, those were the two things, I just wasn't sure if fortnite was gonna be a thing in a few months so I didn't, but I totally could have gotten renegade raider or the pickaxe for that skin (which I actually really like) same thing with season 2, I didn't get the battle pass because I didn't know how long the game would last, but I actually got to tier 70 in season 2 I just never bought the battle pass. And nothing in the battle pass super wows me to be perfectly honest, except for the fact that the black knight is a Monty Python and the holy grail reference.

However, the cosmetics of the old battle passes are a thousand times better than those of now, before at least they had a specific theme, but now they seem to put random stuff making them hideous and without a particular theme (especially chapter 3/4)

@@NitroMatti oh yeah for sure, season 3 - 7 were all really good battle passes and those were the ones I grinded out, season 8 I never finished and then I didn't get 9 or 10, which was the point I stopped playing for the first time. I came back around the release of chapter 2 season 2 because it was covid and I had nothing but time, and I really loved that battle pass. I think it's the last really good one they ever did. And the next battle pass I grinded out was the OG one. Which is okay, but not amazing. And I just had the V bucks sitting in my account so I figured there'd be no harm in getting it and then earning them back.

Rare often means older, so a lot of really rare skins is when they hadn't reached peak designs in the slightest. All of my favorite skins are from season x and above. Azuki is a blue rarity skin with 4 styles and I think everyone deserves to have him.

There are people who count their cosmeitcs by number there is even a person on this comment section saying (i have over 1600+ skins, more than most people), how could you not burn out from buying cosmetics when you can just look at it make your own world and then leave it be without spending a dime. To me fortnite prones me to become burned out, i need someoene to care bout me having some certain cosmetics to keep coming back at the game and to look at that locker once again, this is why partily some people are here on youtube reading comments and writing comments to justify their spent money, i dont think i will spend more money on this game if i allready have charcters, the only problem to me is what if i fall in lvoe with a character for example i didnt want to buy triarch aurora level up pack from last season but after i bought it i fell in love with this skin and now its one of my mains.

Another example: imagine a man going to the gym every day to get buff, and he has been doing it for a long time for the soul purpose to brag how big he has gotten over time, and/or he thinks it helps women like him better. Now imagine someone else coming along and trying to take a dump on his joy/pride by being smart about how he's ''doing it for the wrong reasons'' and ''should be doing it purely for the benefit of his health'', and how they'd ''be the same shape he is if they started at the same time and grinded enough XP'' ... so to speak. Something you spent time, effort, and money on, are always something you can value, no matter what shape it takes. And yes, just like anything, this too has a boundary until it becomes an unhealthy addiction. Dopamine, after all, is a drug. As for your question, how I was able to deduce this? Simple. I have had it happen to me before, and I have tried doing it to other people, just because either they, or I, were trying to feel like the better of us. Which is pitiful, I know. But I would not be surprised if this entire video was a result of someone going on this youtuber's nerves about their skin being worth a lot just because they were in the game before he was. If there are people suffering from some sort of addiction due to skins, this will not help them in the slightest, because they probably won't watch the majority of it, and the creator should know this. Again, I feel this could just be an attempt to find gratification in seeing others agreed with him so he can be proud of his own opinion rather than actually change someone else's and help them enjoy the game in the way he deems proper. Good argument and here is a little more psychology, people also wear skins based on the stereotype around it. For example a good ammount of people who are good at the game use the season three reaper skin and then a stereotype of skill becomes attached to that skin same as for max Omega and purple skull trooper. People also think the older the battlepass skin becomes, it acts as a veteran card. but that fallacy here is that there has been so many battlepasses, current players begin to forget what battlepass that skin is from or how the stereotype changes of the skin henseforth making the idea of "RARE" skins misguided. *this is a supporting thesis*

TL;DR I agree and I don't think things like this should effect people's enjoyment of a game since it mostly boils down to bragging rights, even though there are some really nice "rare" skins out there. I've been playing Fortnite since... roughly around the Infinity War event. I 100% agree with what you just said, basically every "rare" skin is gotten either thanks to luck by getting it in the item shop on time or it's thanks to you getting the battle pass and playing for a certain amount of time. I've gotten a few rare skins and styles over the years, be it battle pass skins like Drift, Fortnite Crew skins like Zero War Wolverine and a few item shop skins like Travis Scott and World Cup Fishstick (and Demogorgon, up until recently). Whilst yes, there are rare skins I like and there are rare skins and emotes that I missed out on (my only regrets in fortnite are missing out on Orange Justice and Peely), almost every Fortnite cosmetic is... cosmetic, almost none of the emotes and skins actually have an effect on how you play, and the ones that do are quickly fixed (such as the Toy Soldier skin). Whilst yes, there have been a lot of BP exclusive skins that many people would desire (especially collaboration skins like Darth Vader, Superman and Optimus Prime), you shouldn't let it get to you because, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter. At best, you're wearing a skin because you really like it, at worst you're wearing a skin because of bragging rights. And obviously, this isn't to say rare skins are only worn purely for bragging rights. My main skin is the Season 5 secret skin, the Enforcer, there are people who play fortnite who wear skins because they like the skin. Heck, when World Cup Fishstick was in the shop, I didn't really think of it as me getting the skin because of the new Fishstick style, I got it because I wanted Fishstick and the new style was the cherry on top (although I do like to run with the World cup style, since it's a nice style you don't see too frequently in lobbies due to it's rarity). Many people like certain cosmetics, simply because they're nice and wear them not to brag about how old of a player they are, but rather because they really like the skin they're using. Of course, many people unfortunately missed out on some really nice skins and wish they had them, and that's fine. As stated prior, my biggest regret was not getting peely due to how much of a fun skin he is, but again it shouldn't effect your enjoyment of the game, as again, at worst owning a rare skin is bragging rights. Play the game not because you didn't get a rare skin, play it to have fun, be it in a casual or competitive sense. Almost all "rare" items in Fortnite do not have a major effect in how you play and whilst there are some really fun skins, not owning them shouldn't dampen your enjoyment of the game.

its not about showing a resume about your skill and age on the game because you own an old battlepass game, its that if something is older and its slowly becoming something that isn't seen as much as time progresses then it automatically can be considered rare (example being renegade raider, black knight, omega with everything unlocked, elite agent etc) even though it cant be traded or sold so it has no real value therefore its pretty harmless it seems to me that there isn't an actual issue with the logic behind it, but that you just don't care and decided to explain why other people shouldn't.

I agree with you. Personally, for me I buy and use skins because I like them. How others perceive skins, mine or others, is none of my concern. Yes. I like playing as Princess Lexa, but I didn't get crew because I wanted to hold that over someone or because I'm a sweat. I just liked her vibe. People act like BP and Crew skins are some kind of status symbol, when they really aren't. It's dumb. I don't care. No one cares. The issue is that people think there's value in things where there truly isn't. Its a coping mechanism to justify the time and money they spent, nothing more.

I agree with most of your comment, however I disagree with the there isn't value to a skin part. I've scrolled past many looking for group posts on Xbox were someone would buy your account just for having a couple of rare skins or someone offering to sell their account for a lot of money. People are crazy for those rare skins, I once saw a post offering $250 just for a Black Knight skin, maybe more. Now I don't browse the LFGP anymore, but I'm fairly certain people like that still exist. People be crazy

I own Takara, a skin that hasn't appeared in the shop for close to 900 days and i don't think nothing special of it, i use it sometimes like any other skin because i like it's style but i will be happy if it appears in the shop again so that more people can appreciate it.

when you say that battlepass "rare" battlepass skins wasnt really a grind so there wasnt anything to "put your name up" i hope u werent refering to season 2 battlepass getting those 70 tiers is the hardest thing ive ever done in fortnite.
