I really think this game is the way it is thanks to it switching from being a live service game late into the development. Even the morality choices might have been a consequence of it. The dialogue choices might have been created last minute and rushed, so they stuck with linear options so that it wasn't anymore time consuming. The game doesn't even have any death animations or scenes when you fall off a ledge. Even the character creator could have been the result of a late production shift. Originally the live service game was going to use hero characters but when it changed they quickly had to create the features for the character creator. Who knows, but the late shift does explain a lot. In which case it is possible that the next Mass Effect game will be OK but we will have to wait and see. If Mass Effect turns OK to be OK then we know that the problems with Veilguard were largely due to EA and their push for live service.

If only it was just 'too light' as the comment above states. But no. The entire game is sanitised in more ways than one. Everyone on the Net talks about the inoffensive dialogue and watered down elements, and rightly so. But as I've said, the lore itself feels bleached. The game *talks* about slavery in Tevinter and how it's bad but we don't actually *see* it. I don't remember seeing a single slave in Minrathous, and I've tried a completionist run. Am I to believe that a society built on the back of slaves and second class citizens keeps both in the basement like its something illegal and to be hidden? Ah, right, ask no questions, consume product. Do you remember how you couldn't visit a town without stumbling upon a chantry in some shape or form in older games? I'm using plural here because its not enough to compare it to Origins. In every game if you make a drinking game every time your hear of Maker or Andraste, you'd die of alcohol poisoning in the first act. In DAV you'll be sober. Why? Don't ask and consume, that's why. Where are the Dalish and the Qunari, two factions that were very interested in Solas's reveal and stopping a world ending event respectively? We only see their reskins. Veil Jumpers and 'rebellious' Antaam. Neither of them elaborate on what their race at large is up to. What do the Dalish at large think of the old gods they revere physically manifesting in this world? Why do the Qunari do nothing with both the rampaging blighted gods and rebellious Antaam? Why is Thedas, *especially* Tevinter, not look at an elven/qunari Rook with an ounce of suspicion or negativity? Fuck you, that's why. Nobody in Tevinter makes their status of a Magister a point of pride compared to what they would view as 'oppressive South'. I've already said my piece on how the game barely talks of Andrastian faith, and its aspect of heavy anti-mage bias is no exception. The cherry on top is that we don't even learn of the Divine and whether or not the status of mages have been uplifted in the world of Thedas, or at least in the South. You'd think will a literal return of the Blight *someone* would be talking about ancient mages being responsible (and technically they'd be correct, since the Evanuris are mages). Ah. Wait. We're not supposed to think. My bad. The whole game is like that. I'm torn between thinking that the reason is lack of fucks given or deliberate gaslighting into thinking that the lore was always paper thin. And that's not even touching on DAV's whitewashing crusade of everything remotely gray. From serious offenders like Antivan Crows to minor things like Solas now despising blood magic or Dorian apologising for his Inquisition self's view on slavery in the codex (yes, it exists, I'm as baffled as you are).

@@RawrieatChu01 Leliana being a lyrium ghost only occurs if you import a world state into Inquisition where she was killed by the warden during the urn of sacred ashes mission in Origins. Is it an interesting way to work around including Leliana in Inquisition while staying faithful to player choice? Not particularly. But don’t blow it out of proportion, the number of people who kill Leliana in Origins and transfer this world state into Inquisition is so small that it becomes statistically irrelevant. Willing to bet a good 90% of the people who read this won’t have a clue about what we are talking about. Red lyrium is not evil and it does not grant you superpowers. It is blighted lyrium. Just like the blight itself, the lyrium corrupts the things around it. Also just like the blight, most people can’t withstand exposure to it for extended periods and their bodies become more and more corrupted and they are literally turned into red lyrium. like how darkspawn are created. ALSO like the blight, some people have some innate immunity to its corrupting effects, and can turn the power it grants into a weapon. The red templars, including Samson, are essentially a corrupted form of the Grey Wardens. Just like the Grey Wardens, these red templars are essentially already dead though, the blight works slowly on them, but it WILL kill them in the end. Like… have you even played these games? Veilguard has a ton of flaws, it makes a number of big blunders in its storytelling… but the things you complained about were established in either Origins or Dragon Age 2. In these examples, the writers aren’t trashing established lore and world. It IS the established lore and world. You just aren’t paying attention.

@@Extreme96PL that’s the issue I have with newer rpg type games, they attempt to shoe horn everything in a first playthrough just cause a few players won’t replay the game again and it’s just really annoying cause why even play the game again at all? When I played FNV for the first time in 2019 I replayed the game again after completing after realizing that I missed so much content and that really made me excited to do it again and try another loadout. When I realized that you can basically experience everything in cyberpunk I only did like 2 playthrough one for male (my canon V) and another for female and never tried a 3rd again as it doesn’t change anything and did it again after the new update which revamped everything but even then I only go to the last few mission and didn’t bother to do PL. Yes, in my case it's the same for CP2077 and FNV, KOTOR and Mass Effect. The only difference is that I didn't like CP2077 that much, and my "canon" V is femV from E3 2018 thanks for the mods on top of that I like femV voice acting more and she can romance Judy which I consider best romance in game. I like most of the first act, because the quests in those acts are the best and I think the story is also the most interesting in the first act. Some side quests like Peralez's questline, Judy's questline, searching for Rivers' nephew were okay, but that's it. GIGs were boring because it's almost the same as DAI, which means MMO fetch quest style. I liked Phantom Liberty a lot more, not only was the story more interesting overall, but they also made the choice Reed vs. Songbird a mini Witcher 2 Roche vs. Iorweth style choice, which means that it changes completely after this expansion's story. The side quests were also great, and even the GIGs are a significant improvement over the GIGs in the base game, as they feel more like the contracts from The Witcher 3 with their short stories, instead having you do the job and return for a reward.

It's just the same boring attack loop intercut with companions doing jack shit. They can't even die, the only stake is player health and most companions can heal you meaning you don't even have to collect potions. It's very brainless fighting, i had more tactics and strategy in both origins and da2. In veilguard i spam attacks and dodge when the enemy comes near, rinse and repeat. Play on underdog difficulty and fight a revenant and tell me you aren't being put to sleep. I was playing mage, too. The most interesting and least nauseating of the classes. i would set up ambushes in origins, I would set up traps and use poison bombs, I would have to rely on my ranger finishing the fights sometimes because the rest of my party didn't heal in time. It was a lot more engaging than stallguard. because that's what all combat is: stalling until they eventually die.

Lies is something pretty common on this game before it's release if you think well. -They said your companions could leave for a time if they didn't like your actions: that can happen only once with the character (Neve or Lucanis) that had their city blighted. Half truth half lie -They said they didn't want to invalidate our choices. Well, at some point in the game Morrigan states she's the vessel of Mythal and she was afraid about being controlled at first, but not. Based on that is clear that the devs choose Morrigan to be the one that used the well of sorrows in Inquisition. Not to mention all the choices they ignore for lazyness. -They said the Inquisitor would have a big part. Well, the Inquisitor did hack shit lol. At least on screen. Don't know about the female romancing Solas version, maybe the only thing they thought about the Inquisitor doing in this game involves that specific state. Which sucks. -And they said the romance would be "spicy". Which makes me have a severe concern for the future lineage of each of these developers families, because if they consider that "spicy", I'm sure their family tree will end with them. And this is just some of the things I came across. Bioware giving Todd Howard a run for his money in the sweet little lies department.

Pretty early in Veilguard there's a conversation with Neve where you're given the option to comment on something regarding Tevinter (I don't remember exactly what) and the game gives you a few options, one being something along the lines of (well they're an expert of "Evil Magic") and then there's 2+ other choices either making a joke or I think being sad about something. I almost always RP my character as being a power-hungry, morally flexible mage, and gladly bargained/worked with Demons/agents of Tevinter in Origins. So given the choices of commenting on how Tevinter mages were experts on "Evil Magic", or literally any other choice, my character chose one of the other choices, as they were quite excited to maybe learn some of the powerful (if maybe a little forbidden) Tevinter magic. So I choose one of the choices that makes a slight joke about something, and at the end of the alternate option, can you guess what my character says? something about how mages of Tevinter are experts on "Evil Magic". This statement, while breaking the illusion of choice, is doubly ironic, as both Neve, AND my character, are Tevinter mages themselves. The way I have always RP'd my characters, none of them would ever blanketly label any kind of magic as "evil", just perhaps risky/dangerous. So the game gives me an option not to comment on how a mage from Tevinter would be an expert on "Evil magic", so I take the option that "Doesn't" say that, and at the end of the comment, my character STILL says it. A real Bruh moment.

Dislike this if you want, but it is disingenuous at best to compare punching/talking down the First Warden at Weisshoupt to the Mage vs Templar choice. You should be comparing the Mage vs Templar choice to the Minrathos vs Treviso choice. Both happen at about the same narrative beat, and both have the biggest ramifications on the rest of the game. I would argue that the Weisshaupt choice is better compared to either choosing how to deal with the wardens or choosing who rules Orlaies(sp?) in Inquisition. Both inquistion choices result in some cutscene flavor/cameos in future missions (who is helping you invade the elven ruin) and some wartable missions. Notable, but still minor.
@Artjuice2 ай бұрын
Even the Minrathous Vs Treviso questline has less consequences than you would expect! Sure, Lucanis or Neve's companion quests are slightly altered and one of them can't heal you, but the main quest continues exactly the same way. If anything, there's no reason to actually pick Treviso as you lose content (no Shadow Dragon quests), while saving Minrathous actually doesn't change Treviso too much as it's important for later main story quests.
@mahumia2 ай бұрын
That questline actually got me fuming. It is presented as a binairy choice: two evils, which would have similar weight (lose one city, get a reputation hit with a faction). However, choosing Treviso does indeed mean you lose content AND get a bigger hit in reputation than the other way around. Not to mention that Neve won't stop complaining about it. Choose Minrathous, and Lucanis will come around and understand that you had to make a tough decision... But it goes deeper than that, in my opinion. Hmm, have an already bad government taken over by a coup by more bad guys (Minrathous) or save a city from being poisoned and people die in droves (Treviso). Morally, I think that saving Treviso should take priority, as that will 100% kill thousands of people. But no, mingling in politics is what the devs want you to do... get your real life politics out of my fantasy game!

However this person was not the only one having standoff with Ghilan'nain, two combat followers were also there and were not tied up by tendrils, why couldn't they move together? Maybe that could even make Ghilan'nain too distracted and no one would have to die. I could even make both candidates show up in the scene by choosing one as 2nd team leader and the other as combat follower, and then still only one of them would attack Ghilan'nain and die. Then a pop shows up and remind me that is because my choice before. How would that make sense?

Since finishing Dragon Age 4: Veilguard, I remain bitter, with dissatisfaction clinging to me like a shadow, especially over the illusion of choices. Minrathous, a city of power and wonder, deserved better. My hope to stand as a Mage Noble of the Imperium, shaping its destiny, was cast aside by the narrative of the game. Instead, I was left to play as a member of the Shadow Dragon, a street faction, forced to settle for being a plebeian mage seeking justice against slavery. I tried to accept this and move forward, choosing to believe in the strength of my city-Minrathous, having the floating Archon Palace as its fortress, impenetrable, and the city guarded by golems and Juggernaut, ready to obliterate any enemy foolish enough to attack. Lore-wise, it stood as a symbol of the Imperium's might, for 300 years it is the only place in Thedas that is not able to be conquered by even the Andraste and Qunari. But in Veilguard? It crumbled. My choice between defending Minrathous or Treviso turned out to be meaningless. Regardless of my decision, Minrathous was destroyed. This isn’t a choice; it’s a farce. An illusion of agency that mocks the player, dangling consequences that never materialize. It stings deeply to see a city, so deeply rooted in the grandeur of Dragon Age lore, reduced to nothing but ashes for the sake of a shallow narrative. The promise of choice in Veilguard is a cruel hallucination-visible, yet empty.

Older Bioware games had a tendancy, often, to give you the illusion of choice a lot of the time (saving the concil or not, in ME1, was ultimately a meaningless decision, as was choising between Anderson and Udina) but they at least had enough meaningfull choices that you could wind up with plenty of unexpected consequences for your actions. First time I played Mass Effect 2 I did Miranda and Jack's loyalty missions super early and, when I got to the scene where they were fighting, I had to choose one because I didn't have enough renegade/paragon points. I chose Jack, naturally, and lost Miranda's loyalty. When it came time to send someone back with the Normandy crew (which was just Dr. Chakwas because I finished other loyalty missions after getting the Reaper IFF) I chose Miranda since I thought her being unloyal could get her killed or fuck up the mission somehow. She died on the way, and thus was not in my ME3 playthrough. Incidentally, I didn't do some of the ship upgrades and Jack also died as well 😭😭

IF you don't have the feather, she kills Assan. This would all be due to punching 1st Warden, him later being delusional about it so not mentioning feather needed to convince Isseya. with Assan dead, Davrin loses 2 of his 5 combat abilities and the griffons get blighted, continuing the Gloom Howler boss fight, needing to kill all of them for good. This would have consequences, all avoiding from NOT punching 1st Warden which I'm sure many player did especially 1st playthrough.

The titan storyline is buried with her.

Choosing Minrathous or Traviso should have made Neve or Lucanis turn on Rook. Depending on their bond level they would either attack Rook or leave the guard forcing you to decide not only what town to save but if your companion lives or dies on that choice.

You know when a shill and kinda very cautious person like Dan actually is critical about something that its REALLY REALLY bad. After couple reviews and seeing some parts of the game I faced the most influential choice in DA Veilguard - should I play it or refund. The more I see about the game the more the refund sounds good.

This reminds me of a joke on the trolley meme. "Three people are about to be hit by a trolley. The lever is not connected to anything and will not change the outcome. Do you pull the lever?"

"Nothing controversial!", I've seen this echoed by so many people. How is it not the most controversial BioWare game ever released, and for all the wrong reasons? Ever since the character reveal trailer it's been mired in controversy. This same studio is making the next Mass Effect: current BioWare's mismanagement, incompetence and 'message driving' agenda will mire ME5 in the same controversy, and produce another piece of garbage.

In BG3 choices are more wild and impresive. Is a shame that Dragon Age, the franchise that inspired Larian, comes to this.

I genuinely didn’t think I’d ever skip a major entry in a BioWare game yet, here we are…
