Commenting on every video before Arakune BBCF combo trials, video 117. Having a local scene that you hang out with and play with every week is genuinely amazing. Supporting your local scene is possibly the most important thing you can do, not only does it help you but it also helps others.

I remember my motivation to get (moderately) good at DBFZ was my friend with 70 hours on it who would constantly beat my ass. I got the game, grinded, we had some good matches, and when I finally beat him 3 - 2 in a friendly Bo5 I popped off so hard. After that, we travelled to another city for an international tournament happening in our country (Bolivia), and watching Tekken live was one of the most amazing experiences I've ever been a part of, alongside playing DBFZ in tournament even though I went 0 - 2 (it was close tho). Also, getting 5th at the Smash Ultimate event, further validating my belief of me being good at the game even though i don't like it/play it anymore (I was ranked top 4 in my city back in the day).

I lost my fighting game competitive drive many years ago, and it's because of the loss of rivals/community. Most of my people quit, moved on, got married, etc. Myself included. And every time I've tried to get back into it, it's just not the same without those guys. I'd say get rivals, and always work to make new ones. Never know when they'll step away.

This is why locals are a godsend for anybody trying to improve. It's a completely different experience sitting next to someone as you play and talk to each other. Compare this to trying to talk to people online, in communities splintered across 500 dead Discord servers, being heavily moderated and with some rando who's going to stop playing next week or actually doesn't play at all because he thinks having a Neco pfp makes him FGC.

With 2XKO and the new Virtua Fighter both trying to bring something new to online play, this video has got me wondering what could developers do to foster or encourage this kind of interaction between players. I'd be curious what other people can think of. Off the top of my head: After a ranked match, you could have the option to challenge the other player as a rival (if they're close to you in rank). If they accept the challenge, the next time you two fight in ranked it'll be for double points, increasing the stakes for the winner and the loser. Only problem is, that makes it more likely you won't meet again after that, if the difference in rank becomes too big.
@phabiorules
@phabiorules 3 ай бұрын
Instead of making it for double points, you could just have a screen that shows what rank your rival is after every win/lose. If the gap between you two becomes too big, then a message would appear saying “you have outgrown your rival” or “your rival has outgrown you.” And then you can get a new rival. Alternatively, if they outgrew you, then you could keep them for a one sided rivalry with the hope they will want to rival you again. If you surpass them a message could say “a former rival has surpassed you, would you like to rival them again?”

I was thinking this for myself recently when I watched your BBCF sets against Bobby. BB's become a bit older now and although it still has a community, I think a rival really helps a gem like that. Like it helps to be around someone who's really into a game that's less talked a bout, you know?

Used to play SFIV with a school buddy of mine for hours every day and it was fucking amazing. Our skill level was identical and almost every match went to the last round. It's kinda crazy how the social aspect is the best part of a 1v1 game.

its funny because when I played tvc, there was people in my city that played, I didnt got the game before they do, because pirating was a thing, so I didnt have the early boost they had, I didn't consider anyone a rival, and it was my first serious marvel like game, the only other thing I took seriously was melee, while I had people to play with, I didnt see them consistently to play for long sessions, the other thing is that marvel 3 got announce too quickly and everyone quick almost right away, I was left alone to my own devices, I played a ungodly amount of time by myself in training and survival, refining my technique to absurd levels, one day I took to online, even if it was wifi, it was still somehow ok practice, I realize that I knew so much that I had no one at my level, and the people strong enough still fall to me way to easily for me to consider them rivals, some years after that, pandemia happen, I finally got to play on dolphin with other people, granted I was rusty, I still feel like im not at my peak to this day, but once I got to a good level of de-rust, I won everything, I don't feel like I ever got a rival, I accomplish everything I wanted, beat everyone that needed to be beaten, while I didnt won frosty online, I know there's no one that can face me in actual irl enviroment, the stuff I can do without lag is worlds apart, considering that kbeast goes even to dawadawa, one of the other zero players that I left as part of my legacy, if he can't beat him consistently, then he has no chance against me, still, I agree having a rival is great for improving faster, but it doesn't make you grow stronger once a certain level is reach, everyone has limits, and most of the time, you or that other person would reach a level you can reach by just playing, at least that's how I feel it, because I have a friend who I teach all the zero stuff I know, he reach a level of power similar to mine, but the knowledge gap was too big, and he couldnt touch me pass a certain level, knowledge can be a determinating factor in someone explosive growth, but it does take longer, just playing with a rival would make you improve, but you will improve against that person, not neccesary against others.

@@ANIMEILLUMINATI I mean I can agree with that, but the few times I got to play with kbeast online we where mostly even due to lag and such, and the person I mention lost consistently to him in online enviroment, while I certainly never got the pleasure of playing irl with either because I live in mexico, I don't have any regrets on retiring on that sense, right now im more concentrated in getting my mojo for granblue because I being having so much fun with nier, and I want to compete again to feel that rush of excitement I once felt when I play tvc.

Dude, my group of FGC friends has been going through this. For a long time, all of us played GBVS and Strive, but now it's like...some of us play Rising, some of us play SF6, some are on Tekken, some are still on strive, and one stupid-ass (me) had the bright idea to enjoy DNF Duel and Uni 2. So, lately, when we get together, we don't even play fighting games anymore. Let's pray that 2xko saves us.

Luckily me and my friend got into fighting games around the same time 2 years ago and have been consistently playing to one up each other ever since, Played a lot of USF4, SF5, DNFDuel, BBCF, and now SF6 with him, when we started playing SF6 on release I had no plans to try to make it to master since I didn't see myself being that good but every time he'd rank up and we'd fight in a match I always had to get good enough to be at least a rank or 2 higher so I can be the one bragging. Recently we both reached master and are hyped to see what season 2 of SF6 is gonna introduce, also Akuma was my original main in sf4 so I'm ready to learn the most disrespectful things known to man to prove I'm better. (I am)

In some ways I think it’s ok. Getting older - in sports or career or family or anything - a lot of us transition into support roles like coaching or organizing or consulting or mentoring. You’ve achieved many of your goals and instead spend energy helping other people achieve theirs. I’m not saying it’s a 1:1 replacement but I do think it’s a natural progression that most people experience.

My rival is a friend I've played just about any fighting game with, but he's never really that serious in getting better so most of the time what happens is I get decent by practicing combos and getting kinda sweaty, but he doesn't practice nor does he like just sitting down in training mode and figure things out, so I'm always a few steps ahead and he never catches up, and so he gets bored and doesn't want to play anymore and waits for a new release to play that, only for the same thing to happen again. It's been like that since Accent Core got rollback.

I think it's partly because you're now a family man, you're in real endgame content now with more important responsibilities. I used to play blazblue in the arcades after college almost daily and the same salary man will put his suit case on the floor and sit on the other side after he gets off work, then I proceed to lose 10 rounds straight.
