Be proud of the milestones only you can achieve. Let's be a nation of tall poppies - proud to be seen and unafraid to be heard. Wow, such a powerful message! I used to struggle with imposter syndrome (sometimes still do) and I wish I had believed this message in my early career. Thanks for sharing and it's such a blessing to know you personally and walk this journey together! :)

I wish I had seen something like this many years ago. I am 73 years old and am just starting to allow myself to be 'me'. I have hidden my intellectuality for similar reasons that Shamane expressed and also my spirituality for fear of 'the men in white coats' appearing.

@@inimacam3945 Dear inimacam, Thank you for your lovely reply. I am being more myself and they think I am really weird! I don't care! I would love to dance but, due to severe arthritis and other problems with my back, The only place I can dance is in my head. I used to be a P.E.teacher and I specialised in contemporary dance! I laugh a lot - I think it is very important under the present circumstances. I don't feel any fear but there are a lot here who do(I live in a complex with others of a similar age and they are very frightened. I maintain that you can't feel fear when you are laughing! My love and thanks. Eleanor

It all starts somewhere and it's better now than never. ;) Rooting for you to continue sharing your own personal story, bit by bit, to uplift and encourage the people around you. Keep on sharing your voice with bravery, in wisdom and in grace. Take care!

Loved this so much! It's crazy, you always feel so alone in these issues but you realize that everyone goes through the exact same thing. I'm done cutting down my own poppy, it's time to give weight to my own thoughts and desires, instead of giving so much weight to the thoughts of others.

Great talk! If there was only a way to get past some of the "poppy cutters" that are often times your managers in the work place. After all, Robert Greene's "First Law of Power" is "Never Outshine the Master".

Even in Australia, I find a lot of asians succeed because culturally they are pushed to work really hard in academia and be model minorities. Entrepreneurship is also common in small business with mothers and fathers owning bakeries, massage parlours. So that trickles down to the culture and children. In my Primary School, all the highest achievers were asian, and there was one white dude. Not because of smarter or intelligence, but because of the expectation from family members and pressure to succeed academically and get into Melbourne University, and the the big four accounting firms. It was always about aiming high. It's a very hierarchical, confucian, conformist and hyper-competitive culture.

Branding the culture as conformist is doing it a major disservice. The whole idea is to be non-conformist and succeed to be the best at the top. Tall poppy syndrome is the definition of conformity.

Ethos of mediocrity? That's a farce. Australia simply doesn't want a class divide. A lot of the cuts are simply made to ground a person and prevent them from forgetting not to step on others or forget the less fortunate once they have "success". The issue with Tall Poppy Syndrome today is because we measure success by wealth. Even the successful people in ancient Rome were reminded as they received their laurels that the were but mortals. The imposter syndrome was a purely personal issue that the speaker here came to overcome.
