We installed our pickups in 8 of Timmy's basses. A thrill, as you can imagine. Tim has a bit of the the tech bug in him and likes to experiment with his electronics. For those basses we created custom versions of our Big Man and Big Single pups for him and installed our 2b preamps as well.

Elliott Henderson My first live band ever was RATM when they opened Lollapalooza 1993 and I wasn’t ready for the sound as I had never even heard of them before that. One of my top live show memories hands down, and that bass tone was easily a huge portion of it! Tool was on the side stage then as well with another monstrous bass tone. Man, I actually was doing same stuff for Russian fans of Megadeth and I just know how happy you get when you nail down one more mystery by either founding a better photo or some unknown crap that is connected with the rigs, strings etc. Shaking your hand for the effort since I know the struggle and remembered that Tim always was super secretive about his rig. Even though I'm not a bass player (and acutally a die hard of Tom Morello, if we're talking all the bands since RATM), that was super informative and it really felt like common territory to me on the "getting facts and info straight" side. \m/

Got an ad for Tom Morello’s Masterclass at the start. How fitting. Anyway, fantastic video again my dude! You really knock it out of the park with these rundowns. I think I may have two corrections for you though: 13:05 I’m pretty sure the SVT 2-Pro hadn’t been released in 1993. This leads me to believe that Tim was probably using its slightly simplified predecessor, the SVT II 19:40 If you have a quick listen to Township Rebellion off the first album, you can hear that there is some kind of wah effect on the bass during the verses, so I doubt Tim only had the two distortion boxes on his board. Hope that helps!
@WhichBass5 жыл бұрын
Thanks A.D I appreciate that! Ah I hadn't considered the date of the SVT's good point. It's so difficult to get any release data from Ampeg bah. Re: Township rebellion I think it was an envelope filter or something. I didn't find any solid sources so left it out just in case.

That Way Huge pedal looks to be a Conquistador Fuzzstortion. Noting the matte black brushed enclosure, blue led, red font and the helmet overtop of the first initial. You can see the helmet in the black and white image more so than the Purple Platypus. I don't think its the Red Llama because it has the green led and the Green Rhino doesn't fit the colour scheme. My deduction could be wrong but that's as close as I could get.

I'm a drummer and Brad Wilk's huge fan, but I've also spent my years of being a Rage fanatic digging into Tim and Tom's rig. Fantastic video, thank you for that, Sir! Three small adds : Tim used the Olympic White Fender Jazz Bass and the Sunburst even for the 2007 Rage reunion shows. He first used Lakland in 2008. You also say we don't know why he uses some bass or another. It's true we never know why he changes his rig, but we can see on many tours that a given bass is for Standard Tuning, another one for Drop D. To mess with us or to use his basses equally in the setlist maybe, he uses the D bass for a song in E (example on "Fight The Power" live performances wuth Prophets of Rage). Finally, he has more than 10 Stingrays now, he got some new ones recently with grey buttons... Which I find a bit ugly compared to the ones he got in 2017.
@WhichBass5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback DarkCook, glad you enjoyed the video. We know he changes tuning frequently. But typically you would have 1 or 2 basses for that. I mean't he has a handful of basses fulfilling the same role. That and the basses each have their own unique features. One would be a maple neck, one with different aesthetics etc. In that sense there was no specific reason for switching basses. I'm sure he has plenty of Stingrays but at the time of publishing, lets go with the safest number of 10 ;)
@MrDarkcook5 жыл бұрын

Been really enjoying your videos. Thank you :] I would love to see you discuss Brian Gibson of Lightning Bolt. There is info out there on his amps, basses, and pedals but the exact string gauges and tunings have never been very clear.

The Stingray special didn't come out until last year. Unless he's using them now all his Musicman basses are the old ones
@WhichBass5 жыл бұрын
That's right, the bass didn't come out until last year. I think he was using beta models. Brian Ball suggests there was a period of testing with Tim prior to the release. ". Tim’s a great friend and was involved early as we were beta testing the redesigned StingRay Special ..." www.reddit.com/r/Music/comments/8xdbhw/hi_im_brian_ball_president_of_ernie_ball_music/

Awesome stuff as always. I even ordered a curry just have watching this, well worth it. Here's a left field suggestion - How about YOUR rig? :) Ever thought abouot doing a 'Rig Rundown' series with bands nearer to you? Considering your accent makes me think you're from somewhere between Bristol, London or even Sussex, you'd probably be inundated with choice, right? :)
@WhichBass5 жыл бұрын
Hah! Josh, I hope the video was a worthy entree to your curry XD. A few people have asked for my rig. It's not very interesting really. With that said I have drafted up a script I just have to get round to filming it. Never say never! My accent is from North London. Thanks for the comment!

@@WhichBass I'd be lying if I were to say I don't set some time aside to sit down and watch the videos with some goodies. The detail and the videos, of course, are absolutely brilliant. Right down to the detail too! See if you can get into doing 'rig rundowns' if you're near anything. John Bollinger and Rebecca Dirks haven't got squat on this.
@WhichBass5 жыл бұрын
Haha thanks Joshua, that's really nice to hear! Dude you flatter me! I'd love to do a similar style to PG. I just don't have the contacts like they do. Plus that's their style I wouldn't want to copy that. They look at the musicians current rig. I like to get the whole story. That's why I started making videos. I wanted to see bass rigs of my favourite players that didn't exist!

Does anyone know what year Tim’s original natural Stingray was built? He bought it second hand for $300 and was a 2 band EQ, he mentioned that it sounded different to his black Stingray. I am trying to work out if it was a Pre-Ernie Ball Stingray from 1976-83, in which case it was either built by CLF or Grover Jackson. If it had a 3 bolt neck it was CLF, if it was a 4 bolt neck it was GJ and if it was 6 bolt neck then it was an Ernie Ball.
@WhichBass2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you know more than us Jon 😅

If anyone has any clear pictures of Tim’s Stingray, especially the headstock and the bolt on neck I can approximate the year it was made.

Thanks for this, very entertaining and interesting. I don't know why you'd think he had "too many" stingrays... How can anyone have TOO MANY stingrays? Well... I suppose they're pretty well and consistently made so not much variation but wouldn't you?! Seriously though, great detective work and CHEERS!

@@WhichBass Silly reply? To colour coordinate with the set! Serious answer - I've just discovered flatwounds and I'd LOVE to have one bas with flats, one with wirewounds!
@WhichBass5 жыл бұрын
I tried flats once and I was intrigued. I'd love to give them another shot. What type of music do you play with them?
@garideb5 жыл бұрын
@@WhichBass My first time using flats and on a MM Stingray it's an epic sound. I'm getting back into it after decades away and also recovering from a hand injury so not very proficient, but the fast attack of the 'ray with the low emphasis of the flats makes for a very dark and silky vibe, think Bernard Edwards. It's much more punchy than the James Jameson elastic vibe.

I have a new mission for you, should you accept the challenge. Have you done a project on Chuck Rainey? As one of if not, ‘the’ most recorded bassists Im sure he’s gone through a fair amount of gear. Then again, his sound has been relatively consistent over the 50+ years of being in the studios so, there may not have been all that many changes. Regardless, with his accomplishments he I’m betting most bassists would be interested.

In all of my touring, I’ve only covered up the identifying features of one pedal manufacturer, but it’s wasn’t to keep tone secrets: their product rep was a real asshole so I didn’t want to give them free advertising 😂. They sound great though, so black tape made me feel better about still using them despite my negative experience with the brand.
