BTS song production, one of the things I'm proud as an Army when people wonder why I love BTS so much..they're so intricately layered! They dont just put the song together, so much thought is put in the making of, BTS in house producers I like to think of them as part of BTS as a family :)

Thank you, Andrew, for drawing attention to Life Goes On, a beautiful, hopeful (and overlooked) song. One of my greatest joys has been singing harmony in various choirs, ensembles, church groups for most of my life, but I've never heard such an enlightening explanation of the emotional impact of different intervals. Wow! When I listen to BTS, I zero in on the harmony vocals, and, like you say, sometimes they're featured and sometimes they're hidden. I have a blast picking out the harmonies and "singing backup." 💜

Oh wow! This song breakdown is so insightful. Early on in my rabbit hole journey, it came to a point that I was so intrigued about how their music can feel so real and so right, that they can elicit such strong emotions from the listener even without knowing Korean. So I found out that Pdogg (their main producer) majored in music education in college and he also majored in vocal performance in arts middle school and high school. And that explained it all. There is such strong music theory application in their songs and with Pdogg putting most of their music together and also teaching and exposing the BTS members to so much music during their trainee days, it just all made sense. It is not so much that they are my favorites but I can honestly hear something very different about their music compared to other kpop acts which really sets them apart. Fandom wars and all and people can make as much noise as they want to but there is no denying that BTS produces well-crafted and "smart" music and that's the bottom line, it should come as no surprise why they are miles ahead of the competition. And we're not even going into the lyrics yet... :)

Appreciate these kinda videos Andrew!! I remember back up until 2017(?) Kpop stans would openly look down on BTS vocals saying they were weak vocalists when in reality BTS were one of the few artists then and even now who sing live. There were thinkpieces by these kpop stans about how they prefer their favs lipsyncing than tired breaths of live vocals of BTS at the end of the song and at the same time looking down on them saying BTS has weak vocal line One such post/video I had come across was "kpop artists who can't harmonize" naming BTS as one of them citing a Run BTS episode clip where BTS was consciously harmonising badly for comedy. In 2022 when BTS has come so far and yet people still attack their vocals, watching your analysis on their skill & intentions of vocals and harmonies make me really happy💜

Thank you for this Andrew! I've listened to Life Goes On for a lot of times and I didn't understand (tho I enjoyed) how this song just hit me with waves of nostalgia. Strange, especially during the first listen as I used to associate music and nostalgia together if I heard it during a certain period of time and trigger memories or feelings during those times. So the nostalgia should have only made sense as I listen to the song around this time. Amazing how music can make you just... feel.

this is amazing and so insightful, thank you! I have realised that with literally all BTS songs they have SO many layers, that even after listening 40+ times I still hear new things in the back, their hidden vocals are always so beautiful. hobi's new album has a lot of this, where the songs are just so rich with layers. their lives are also always such a treat so I'm happy you delved into that as well, they always add new perspectives and harmonies in their lives e.g. their 'for youth' performances, its a testament to how great they are as artists. :)

Hi Andrew!!! I love the video! I find it funny when you said "I thought I had the harmonies all figured out." 'Cause I feel like there's nothing new to find in their music, and yet every time I listen to their music I discover something new. Every single time. Their music is like a treasure and a treasure map at the same time. It's crazy. And the richness they add with their vocals really is precious. Because its difficult to catch all of it at once, some times I feel like it gets richer the more I listen to it. Especially when I pay attention to it. And while the song is written with the goal of evoking certain feelings, which it does, it's quite often a new experience, just having your current feelings collide with those that the song evokes... Sigh. Especially when sudden deeper understanding of a lyric hits you. Never mind when it's carried with such beautiful vocals. Especially at moments like those, it carries impact. It's like watching the sunset everyday. You know it's coming everyday and you know what it looks like, but it's never the same from day to day. You know, there's this part in the song that makes me smile? It's where they sing "Ooh-ooh ooh-ooh". I don't know. It's just something that makes me happy when I hear it in this song. Besides all that 😅 I really did learn a lot today. Especially with the way you portrayed it and then gave clear examples with music were very familiar with, so we obviously notice it. The emotions of harmonies is not something I'm likely to forget now. I love the vid! 보라해요! 💜

Thank you for this video Andrew! I love how your appreciation for BTS and love for and knowledge of music has inspired your own angle to breaking down their music! I studied both instrumental and choral music in my formative years, so I especially enjoy these kinds of videos! I've always believed that the nature of sound has it's own healing and destructive properties, and BTS knows how to use these sonic resonance via beats, frequencies, rhythms, melodies and harmonies to convey their messages. I physically feel better listening to songs like Life Goes On, Mikrokosmos, Airplane, Seoul, etc when listening with a good sound system that can give enough of the bass frequency to feel it in your bones. That vibration and resonance along with the rest of the soundscape (to me) feels like its repairing things from the inside out. Looking forward to the next video!!💜

I found your video today. Thanks for these, I already watched many of your videos! I'm a writer myself and the lyrics are really important to me and I'm therefore also studying the Korean language so that without having to translate several times I can understand BTS songs better... since words are important to me, I just can't blindly trust other people's translations, and since English is not my native language either (there are no proper, or at all, BTS translations in my own language and I myself am not yet ready to do them,) I want to know Korean better, I also study Korean history and culture for the sake of understanding the references in the lyrics, but I am not a musician, and it's just amazing to understand more about it and hear the musician's opinion about their music 💜

Just listening to you talk about the song made me cry, remembering the pain of those times - for everyone, for them in particular - and understanding how they used their own expressions of sorrow to give us hope. The descriptions of the mood of each interval is information I will carry with me for the understanding of other songs. A few things I would like to hear about: There are two songs where the first three notes - even just one note - instantly transport me to the furthest extent of emotion: Tear and Epiphany. Perhaps my favorite BTS song, Answer: Love Myself has the flavor of turning darkness into light. These days I can sometimes listen to it without crying. I'd like to know how it does that, musically.

Their songs bring out emotions that you don’t know you’ve been containing for a while. Thanks for this! Looking forward to more.

I love Life Goes On! It's like a warm hug kind-of song. It broke my heart when during Festa RM said he worked so hard on the song but it didn't do as well as Dynamite and Butter. So thank you for doing this breakdown and giving attention to this song! 💜Anyway, if someday you will do a breakdown on Euphoria or Magic Shop, there's video by DJ Swivel (he's one of the producer and mixer for these 2 songs) where he showed everything that goes on in the track including the vocals. maybe you can use that as part of your research material 🤗

I’d never thought of it as emotions of harmony! Their ability to bring out emotional response has always struck me. Fascinating discussion Andrew!💜💜

As a fellow musician, this analysis was really fun! - (I'm going to show this to my musician sons, who will also enjoy it. :) - Sometimes I listen to BTS through headphones specifically, because I pick up on SO many amazing lines, harmonies, and arrangement ideas I hadn't heard through my speakers. - So often I end up rolling back and saying, "Wow! - listen to that line way back in the track, winding it's way through (often Jimin or JK) but SO many exquisite layers in any case. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Andrew, that was awesome! It's amazing to see how music works and your explanations have opened up to me a whole new world of music that I wasn't even aware of! One suggestion though; it would have been good to run through the MV again (after your explanation) with your notes as highlighted text as the music was playing to 'see' what you meant. Not sure if this is just asking for too much but it would have clarified in my non music mind what you meant and made me understand the music and your explanation better. Hope that makes sense! No matter, enjoyed this and now I won't be looking at music as something just to enjoy, I can now see a whole different world going on... 😁😁

I have to tell you, Andrew... I thought I was going to be listening to this dry treatise- an intellectual discussion of music theory- and was playing on my phone while listening to you--- but I had to put my phone DOWN. You really blew me away and gave me words to express the comfort I get by listening to BTS. Now I want to know how thought out or pre-planned this all is. Do their producers have a template they use (Mmm, I think we need a minor chord here...) or is this organic. Do they just feel what chords they need to use. (Don't know if this makes sense at all since I know nothing about music. I just know that BTS makes me cry.) Edit: I want to print out that big chart you have and put it on my wall!

Thank you so much for giving it a chance! And out of curiosity, is there a way I could title it or make a different type of thumbnail that would make you realize more what the video would be like? And to answer your question, I think the chords or harmonies are probably partly organic, partly experience, and partly planned out 😂 they probably learn a lot of it studying music theory and then just "feel" it in the moment while writing the songs

@@AndrewBergSax Well, you got me with the title "Why BTS music is so emotional" so I think that was a good call. Maybe you should print up some posters with the emotions generated by diff chords/harmonies like you had in the video. Bet a lot of ARMYs would be interested. (I know I would like it: nice fonts) Also, side note, I watched a video yesterday by Henry Cheng re classical influences in BTS music... Now I know nothing about music, but I thought it might interest you: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eajQfmWDiJusfq8

Thank you, I enjoyed your reaction to BTS' songs. I loved them more than the first, and the way you explained the songs, harmony and feelings in the song. It's great. Can you do a reaction to EXO's singing? Their voice is very cool.and Sorry for my English, if there is a mistake, it is not my original language😍😍😍😊😊😊
