When it comes to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, it’s crazy that it’s still has the word “studio” in its name despite not being about the making of movies anymore
@LizzyLoves9110 күн бұрын
I’m a former cast member, so park acronyms have become engrained in my head: WDW, MK, DHS, DAK, etc. Those are mostly relevant when I write about the parks, but when I talk about the parks, I definitely use MK and DAK the most. My friends and I usually refer to Hollywood Studios, as simply “Studios”, and sometimes refer to Magic Kingdom as just “Magic”. Animal Kingdom is almost always “DAK”. Even places like Disney Springs, Typhoon Lagoon and the Polynesian Resort get shortened to “Springs”, “Typhoon” and “Poly” respectively. Cast Members definitely have their own way of speaking about the parks and it is VERY hard to stop, even years after my job with them ended. I’m sure the abbreviations aren’t exclusive to CMs, of course, but they use them all the time.

You know, sorta related, but Universal recently updated all the names of their parks and resorts to address this same issue with inconsistent naming. It was very subtle, mostly a minor change and updated logos that better match each other and the new branding for Epic Universe, but for Islands of Adventure and Volcano Bay, they altered the logo from saying "Universal's" to just "Universal", dropping the apostrophe S like Disney did with California Adventure. They even did the same with all their on-property resorts, so everything is just "Universal [Resort/Theme Park Name here]". It was a simple change, but it works
@MattMcIrvin10 күн бұрын
Though when Six Flags removed the apostrophe-S from a bunch of their DC-themed rides to turn, say, "Catwoman's Whip" into "Catwoman (TM) Whip", it just sounded insane.

You said, at 10:08, "when World's Fairs do pop up." I thought that was a weird thing to say. Has there been a World's Fair since 1964? I looked it up, and I'll be damned, they still organize them occasionally. The last one was in 2017, and I thought it was strange that I never heard of it. Well, that's probably because it was held in Kazakhstan. There have been several already in the 21st Century. I had no idea! Before 2017, there was also: • Japan in 2005 • Spain in 2008 • China in 2010 • South Korea in 2012, and • Italy in 2015 I also wanted to know when was the last one held in the USA. It turns out that was New Orleans in 1984. I remember 1984 well. I was in the Army. But, I have absolutely no memory of hearing about a World's Fair in Louisiana that year. How could I miss that? They actually don't call them "World's Fairs" any more; they call them "Expos." But, still, you would have thought I would remember such a thing. But I don't. And another thing. Disney has a lot of "shows" in their theme parks, but there's only one that my entire family enjoys. That show is the Festival of the Lion King at Animal Kingdom. It's the one must see show, anywhere, on which we all agree. As a result, Animal Kingdom is one of our favorite places to visit, which puts us outside the norm for regular Disney fans. We don't care. We missed the show like I can't even describe during, and after, the COVID shut down. We were literally dancing with joy when it re-opened, although it isn't the same since corporate decided to still the live performers. It's just not the same show in its truncated form since it came back. In fact, we are going again this January. I can't wait!!
@MattMcIrvin10 күн бұрын
The only World's Fair I actually went to was the Knoxville one in 1982, but I remembered the New Orleans '84 one just because the Space Shuttle test orbiter Enterprise was exhibited there. I just visited Osaka and I knew there had been a World's Fair there in the past (1970), but I was surprised to discover that there's going to be another one there next year. Festival of the Lion King is pretty great!

For all the parks at Walt Disney World put Disney's in front of the name and that's it. That will help all of the people do not realize Epcot is part of the resort. Everybody in the know will call it Epcot as well as dropping Disney's from all the others like you said. My confusion is the word Resort is it applies to each hotel as well as the entire complex.

Yes, I think they should drop the world “resort” from Walt Disney World and leave it only for the hotels because “World” already implies that it’s an entire complex of related attractions.

As a kid who grew up in greater Washington, DC, when I hear "DCA" I think of National Airport, which nobody calls Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. There's some inconsistent lumpiness even in Tokyo, where you have Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea: a nice symmetry except that in the English names one has internal capitalization and the other doesn't, because in English "-land" is a place-name ending, but "-sea" isn't really; it's usually a separate word.

It's actually quite common on the East Coast today to just refer to Walt Disney World as "Disney", but I find that too ambiguous--you could be talking about any of the resorts or about the company, or even about the cruise line. When I'm writing, I actually use "Walt Disney World" or "WDW" for the resort name sometimes to make it clearer that I'm not talking about Disneyland. But when I'm talking, I call it Disney World. Also, I find it kind of fascinating that Disney was always very careful to separately refer to "Walt Disney World" and "The Magic Kingdom" even when WDW only had one theme park. Because, even then, there was more to Disney World than the Magic Kingdom. But I don't recall anyone other than Disney really using the name "Magic Kingdom" until there was more than one theme park there; they'd just say they were going to Disney World.
