last year i finally snapped out of it, i was consuming way too much in terms of products (skincare, makeup). So i started cutting down. But it was tough, seeing ultas sales being advertised everywhere, feeling like i needed to use my sephora points. It sounds silly but it is an addiction, and the only way to rehab from it is to just stop. Remind yourself you still have 5 bottles of skincare that are half full, that you don't need that bottle of nail polish that you will use once, and that sometimes one bottle of shampoo is enough to do the job. Then i had a baby this year and realized i REALLY needed to stop. I no longer purchase ANY new makeup, and i buy maybe one skincare product if I'm almost or already done with the same product type. I can't say I'm fully cured, but I've started focusing more on finishing what i have and only opening something new when one thing is finished. My splurges are on my baby now 😊

My makeup/skincare addiction was in full swing during my early 20’s, and I stopped because my health took a turn for the worse. It really put things into perspective about what’s more important and what needs attention. You tend to stop wanting to buy anything when you just want to be your old self again. I’m 30 now and I’m finally getting back to my old self again, but better than ever. A new environment, good relationships, self love, and good food does more for my face than makeup and skincare.

Im guilty of falling down this rabbit hole but I caught myself about 2 years ago. I went through all my excess products, donated all sealed/new products I never touched and purged anything expired. I know what products my skin likes and I rebuy my items. Every now and then there is a new product I want to try, but it will be a replacement for a current product I use and I wait till I finish the product Im replacing. Right now I'm going through my closet and taking items I never wore (I lost 100 lbs) and I found a womens shelter I can take them to. I can live a full and happy life without over consuming. And I certainly listen to smaller "influencers" for recommendations. My favorites will always be the Welsh twins. Theyre honest and trustworthy

I’m baffled by Mikayla’s fans. She has been exposed so many times yet people still trust her. There are 2 beauty influencers, Emily Noel and Jen Phelps, I definitely trust and that is partly because they do not accept any sponsorships. I guess money will always be a big motivator. People never have enough.

I am also a shopaholic on my way to recovery. And I think that for people like me with anxiety issues, sales are the worst nightmare. I made a promise to myself that I will never buy anything because there is a sale. I unsubscribed from all the notifications from stores and literally try to ignore them. Because when you see a sale, you have a feeling that you need to buy something, that you will miss this great opportunity to save money, but in reality you can save more, if you go to the shop only when you need something, and buy this particular thing, even at full-price. I would even assume, that sometimes it will make you think twice before buying something expensive, while during sales your mind is blurred with the ecstasy of the feeling that you are saving money. This is a tricky thing.

So glad someone said it. All I see and think when I look at her is her lip filler which I doubt is the look she's going for. The overly plump lip look is so over done that I really appreciate a natural lip look. It's now way more interesting to look at than the obviously filled lips. It's like the "blush blindness". I'm pretty sure a lot of these women have "lip filler blindness" and don't realize how unusual it looks to everyone else. Your natural lips are beautiful! Leave them alone!

It’s so different when you have a certain amount of $$ per week && are trying to find a good mascara && can only afford one if you watch people like Mikayla who says nearly everything is the most incredible thing ever && typically have motives that trump what’s in the best interest of her subscribers. I have a select few beauty creators I’d actually take a recommendation from && typically I feel more convinced when I see more than one of those ppl enjoying the same product. I also think it says a LOT when you see a ton of creators using a few things repeatedly, like BK beauty & sigma brushes, when they’re not mentioning them in the video those are just the brushes they always reach for out of their whole collection. I also don’t have nor watch TikTok.

Precisely! If everything is of equal quality, what's even the point of reviews? This reminds me of the California law about cancer risk disclosure on products - even if the risk is miniscule, a special case of a special case, they need to put "may cause cancer" on the product, lest one person in 100 mil gets cancer from it and sues the company, and the company has nothing to cover itself up with. So everything, from Chinese toys to organic soap, "may cause cancer" these days, with no qualifier of an actual risk - so how are you supposed to make preference for one product over the other lol.

So many people take Spironolactone in the US to control hormonal/cystic acne. It works really well, I use it and haven’t had issues. The times I have had the most issues even on the meds was when I used too much product, and wore too much makeup. Choose one or two actives to rotate through in the week, vitamin C if your skin agrees with it, a really good sunscreen and a really good moisturizer and you’re good to go. Your skin doesn’t need all of this. Additionally, if you are really concerned about acne and the ingredients in your food, you should also take a look at what you eat-ultra processed foods, foods high in sugar and saturated fat contribute to more harm to our bodies than anything.

My 11 are: tinted moisturizer with sunscreen (Mercier), Bemetint, Haus cheek in watermelon, several tinted lip gloss, plumping moisturizing lip tint, Anastasia brow powder duo, Hourglass bronzer, nudes eye color and one lipstick. I also use a lemon exfoliating sheet (Korea). I plan to visit the dermatologist soon to inquire about some anti aging or sun damage producers, which I’ve used in the past. What made a huge change for me in my 40s is to stop using eyeliner and mascara, this took care of any bags under my eye. Some of our “needs” are actually created by reactions to ingredients in cosmetics. Eye makeup was causing or emphasizing bags and dark circles, fullstop. I also stopped with any hair products except shampoo conditioner. I also don’t buy OTC skin care unless discussed with dermatologist. I should mention that I don’t do my own nails, I get a gel mani every three weeks but I do have a few light tinted nail care products for my toes.

i had to count my products too because i was like "oh there's no way I use more than 4-5" but then I remembered my perfume and all the stuff I put in my hair to maintain my curl pattern. i consider myself very minimal too and I don't wear makeup at all but my total was still around 20-25! (depending on if we're counting necessities like deodorant, toothpaste, soap, etc.) your videos are so interesting because I definitely do shop a lot (I work in retail and love my store lol) and i also have several collectible hobbies, including one very expensive alternative fashion. i have always thought the difference between collecting and unnecessary consumption/hoarding was whether or not a person cared for the items they collected (kept them clean, put them on display, etc), but seeing as how the aesthetic of displaying all these products is part of the overconsumption thing, i don't think that's it anymore -- or the rule has now changed to be somewhat less clear. you'd know someone hoarded comic books, for example, if they were in nasty dusty piles vs inside plastic sleeves in neatly-maintained boxes. this is only my second video of yours but you have a lot of great stuff to say and your recovery from shopping addiction is really inspiring! i definitely think i'll be able to shop smarter watching more of your videos. thanks for all the thought-provoking points and topics!!

10:53 knowing these numbers was actually very helpful for me when it comes to comparing myself to those I see online. If a beauty influencer is using 100+ products in a month, and even you are using around 50 products a month, I shouldnt be down on myself for not to looking like you guys (naturally), when I have only 10 products in my bathroom (and I don't use those consistently in a month). Being able to recognize that social media causes us to compare how we look so much to how others look online, and (filters aside) there is no way I can naturally attain the same level of look that a beauty influencer when I am using maybe 10% or less of the products that they have. lol

I think people should look at jewelry too. Like the Alhambra bracelet you are wearing is $5k+. We see influencers, such as yourself, wearing multiples of these and then opening drawers upon drawers of these products. 3 and more bracelets of the same price point on coating arms. I think that is also over the top consumption and the development of fine jewelry is often at the expense of child labor. There are categories that get over consumed. Perfume is a hot category for this right now too. I suspect jewelry will be the next one.

I have for showering purposes four products: shampoo, conditioner, body wash and a face cleanser. For AM skincare, I put on serum and a moisturiser, so two more products. For make up, I am a minimalist and I use my products until they are empty. I put on concealer to cover up red spots (lasts for a year), use an eyebrow powder set (lasts for three years), and a lipstick cream that also doubles up as a cream blush (lasts two years). So three make up products here. At night, my skincare routine consists of a PM cleanser, retinol cream, and PM moisturiser. So that‘s three more skincare. For my body, I make use of a body moisturiser only on the regular in colder months and a deodorant. I also have a separate moisturiser for my hands. So three products in this respect. And lastly, I put on one aromatherapy oil roll-on to help start my senses for the day. My grand total is: 16 products that I use regularly and always until they are empty. I see myself as very low maintenance 😊

Counting only skincare, I have 7 different products that I use every day, and an additional 3 that I use about once a week. Sometimes I use something up that I don't repurchase and sometimes I am trying something new, but of the 7 daily products each corresponds to an ingredient that I have found works for me over the last year, so that number has been pretty stable. And then a small stash of my favourite facemask that I use before special occasions.

As someone who has recognized that I have a problem with shopping and how I have consumed to fill an emotional void....and as someone who is recovering from the ramifications of that, seeing that much product makes me physically ill.

I use 7. Now the number that’s in my stash? Well…that’s none of your business 😂😂😂😂😂

I use Biore charcoal face scrub, NYX or ELF face primer on my skin during the day, and Vaseline Intensive Care lotion under my eyes and on my body. Easy and inexpensive. Oh, and I'm 70.

I still have 3 makeup items of each category or more, so 3 foundations, 3 blushes, 2 concealers, 7 lipsticks etc. I even get anxious about handling and organizing them, so I no longer buy any new items unless one is finished. Especially lip products when i mostly use lip balm daily. Makeup items have an expiration date so it's no use- hoarding them.

50 and l know l have too much already for myself because stuff doesn’t get used or l have tester products l am just trying to use up. I can’t imagine more than what l, personally, have because l would be so stressed trying to use it all up before it expires 😵💫😱

Its so bad because i love watching other peoples hauls and living vicariously through them 😅 but then then im always left with this feeling deep down that im missing out on a certain product i keep seeing. Its so brainwashing 😂 but im stronger now as i hate clutter more than anything in my home x

These influencers don’t buy makeup they are given makeup. Most of us know this. So halls are just entertainment and not taken seriously

10:33 - girl, I counted 12 to shower ALONE…. I stopped there. I was too depressed to even make an attempt at my skincare, then hair, then makeup which I probably can’t even count TBH - for shame!! So I’m definitely guilty of being a product hoarder/addict.

I have 30 makeup products that I use regularly, plus 10 eyeshadow palettes, 8 hair products, 8 body/face products, and 7 perfumes. It feels way healthier than what it used to be. I agree with the less is more approach to skincare.

I use 45-50 products monthly including shampoo, conditioner, and hair masks/treatments. It’s crazy how fast everything adds up

I had to stop the video and count all my skincare, haircare, bodycare and makeup products. I use all of them monthly, most of them daily or weekly and I got 100 products total.

You can half that and then half again. Enough trash for earth 🌍
@CaitlinPawlowski2 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing and trying this too ☺️ I hope you don’t feel the pressure to half or half again the amount of products you use. That wasn’t the point of the video necessarily As long as you use and enjoy all the items and feel ok about using them then that’s okay Of course if you feel like you can or want to cut back by all means go for it but I think being aware of what we are using and deciding whether or not we are okay with it is good to know xx

Coming from a once “girly girl who had to buy every product that came in a pink package “ to a now minimalist Shampoo, conditioner, face wash, body wash, shaving cream, tooth paste, mouth wash, moisturizer, spf, body lotion, pimple patches, deodorant, lip balm, makeup prep/setting spray, bb cream, concelour, lip and cheek tint, powder, mascara So 19?! That’s more than I expected! I can’t imagine what it used to be like back when I used to dye my hair, tan, exfoliate, nails, and do my full glam. It was a fun phase in high school and college. I even had a really cute pink instagram page filled with aesthetic pictures I took and edited (mainly places and products) but it’s so unattainable nowadays and a waste of money😅

Thank you for bringing up hormonal birth control for skin, I’ve had consistent acne since for about the past ten years (I’m 21 now) and I’ve accepted it and just try my best to take care of my skin. But every now and then I look at other young women my age and can’t help but think “how do I still have acne and they don’t?” I guess a factor is I’ve never been on the pill, I imagine there are other girls out there that might need that reminder, now and again.

I only have 11 products in my skincare routine: a pre-cleanser to remove sunscreen and dirt, a low-ph cleanser, a toner, a peptide serum, a vitamin c serum, a more expensive sunscreen to go out for the whole day, a cheaper sunscreen to walk the dog in the morning, an enzyme peeling(I just love enzyme peelings) and an acid peeling to use once a week, an eye cream and a moisturizer. I have a feeling this is more than enough. I do not use makeup on daily basis and feel like the happiest person alive. I remember one person said: “Why do you need a BB cream? Wouldn’t it be better to invest in your skin and fix it first, so that you will have nothing to cover?” It has been my motto for the last several years.
