@susanjeffries51082 ай бұрын
One of the women on a podcast I listened to during the pandemic said she had started setting up little stations for delivery drivers with snacks and hand sanitizer and even toilet paper or paper towels. I slowly started to do seasonal snack stands at Christmas which then grew into having things like Gatorade and snacks in the summer. It has grown into something we do year-round and I love it. When it's a super hot day I try to put the drinks in ice so they're cold and I've had several delivery drivers comment how much they appreciate it. Not that I'm this perfect person or looking to be thanked. I just think it's a nice thing to do, especially when the weather is inclement and you know they've got to be so hot and sore from hoisting all those packages all the time. It seems to me that it may not always be easy for delivery driver to stop and get a cold drink or snack somewhere. I suffer from blood sugar issues and I know how it is if you're really hungry or thirsty and don't have access to food or water.

I AM YOUR AGE AND I TOTALLY DISAGREE...My own mother who is still alive goes to great joy...and so do I to put Christmas in every square inch of the house. Not tinsel and balls...Tinsel is banned in my home. These are decorations I have collected for many years. As my children grew they were all given their own trees and all the decorations they had been bought from when they were born. Every single one of my Mum's grandchildren were given a theme at birth and get then every year...when they turn 18 they are bought a tree and all their decorations are handed on to them My eldest son is 47 and when he was 18 had over 60 'CAR' decorations. My daughter has just bought her house after years of military bases and did the same. I never by cheap junk decorations....and I have all my decor 50 years later. I actually just delivered a 3 foot tree I bought when in America years ago to Mum today as a friend had given her beautiful antique German decorations. My best was 102 decorated treed...that was 2005..... At THAT time I OWNED 3 7 DAY A WEEK shops and worked 6 days a week...and STILL found time to decorate. My homes have been in 3 country decorating magazines. You sound like a Grinch. I will enjoy my Christmas AS WILL MY 99 year old Mum....

As a former Marshall's employee I can speak to the hold situation regarding that Hello Kitty blanket... Holds are not allowed to be "in the back". The customer service desk is where holds go for customers AND employees alike. Just because you can see it, doesn't mean you can have it, if it's on hold. Perhaps the situation would've been different if they didn't straight up call out that the hold was for an employee, but still, some customers piss me off with the entitlement.

That statement implies to me she normally does at least 3 trees, and that in itself feels mind boggling to me
@susanjeffries51082 ай бұрын
I think it depends on the size of the tree, honestly. At least for me. We're all different. We have a really skinny pencil tree from Michaels that we put by the front door stoop and it takes 20 minutes to set up and decorate. Maybe 30? But here in Oregon the days can be kind of gray and wet in the winter and I like the cheeriness that a tree by the front door gives. I also like to think that its a little bit of festivity for the delivery drivers that come to our house. I love to put out snacks and hope it makes a difference for them in their busy routes. This year I was longing for a smaller tree inside the house as well. The larger trees are pretty exhausting to decorate. So I think if you've got 9 ft trees all throughout your house that could be a monumental undertaking, but a couple of smaller trees feels manageable for me at least. Although I will confess there have been years I would have been perfectly happy not to have any tree at all! My son and husband are horrified at the thought, however, and I'm always glad I took the time to put up the tree (after the fact). But I totally agree that sometimes just the task of going out and buying a real tree, or putting up and fluffing out and decorating an artificial tree can be so daunting! Some years I'm feeling like I want to do all the things, and some years I crave simplicity. I do appreciate the houses that get all decorated infested for the holidays. When it gets dark so early, it can bring a lot of light into the world. I love to go for walks in the evenings and look at everyone's outdoor displays. So while I may not go all out, I appreciate the people that do 😂.

So a tree story for you, but I had a Christmas tree that I had had for almost 20 years. It was the first tree I got as an adult during a time my family was going through some things and my dad came over and we went shopping together. My dad and I always loved Christmas and doing the the tree, etc. when I was younger. Well he got me that tree we picked out together. It was a pre-lit tree with multi-colored lights, we didn’t have pre-lit trees growing up so it was a big deal but nothing fancy, but I loved it. It was from Kmart (aging myself here lol). That tree lasted through multiple cats and even when the lights stopped working (had one crazy cat that chewed wires 😂) I just strung other lights on it and kept going. My boyfriend asked one year of I was ever going to get a new tree and I just said no, that one was SO sentimental to me I couldn’t. I did finally work up the emotional capacity to let it go about 3 years ago. It was hard! He had to be the one to carry it out of the house because I couldn’t bear it. I found a new tree that I loved and it was a modest tree on sale. I do love it but the memories live on. I hope this one lasts me at least 20 years! 😅 I still have crazy cats 😂.

LOL, I think I have that same tree from K-Mart too. It was my first tree I got as an adult. It has survived several moves and many different cats throughout the years. It still lights up with the original lighting, but I think I've replaced every light on that tree and have spent hours repairing the tree some years. The tree is still looking good and brings me many happy memories. I thought about replacing it with a very expansive tree especially the year I had to do the major repair. However, after I fixed the tree and thought more about the prices of the really nice tree, I decided I'll stick with my K-Mart tree. I haven't liked the newer Christmas decor for the past few years that I see in my local stores. The only decor I've purchased in recent years may have been on vacations where I purchased a beautiful handmade piece to remind me of our vacation together as a family. My tree is full of those decorations and having those memories as I decorate the tree is so much more enjoyable.

I’m 31 years old, born and raised in the U.S. October was always for Halloween. November was for Thanksgiving. The reason Santa was on the last float in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was to kick off the Christmas season. And that was very different from what my parents did. For them in the 1950s and 1960s, they didn’t decorate until Christmas Eve. Then they would celebrate through January with the Twelve Days of Christmas. Anyway, the impulse to decorate for the seasons and various holidays stems from the need to show-off and brag. “Look at how much money and time I have to do this!”

Finally decided on one and met a fellow customer ( a stranger) at the registers where we happened to be paying for our purchases side by side. I congratulated her on her great purchase (I’m Australian, we’re friendly 😄). She turned to me and said, “do you want it? My mother and friends gift them to me when they find one. I actually got one from Vietnam from a friend who travelled there. Each and every one means something to me - and that’s what I want my tree decoration to be like. Where I live, 90% of people still get fresh trees and most of us still use real candles. I think it’s very focused on tradition. How much tradition do you get when you buy completely new Christmas decorations every year? None.

Re: storage unit rentals. I live in a formerly rural area thats undergoing development into an outer suburban - exurban residential community. When a new subdivision gets built, new storage unit rental businesses go in at the same time, anticipating the need for extra storage from the start. The houses are mostly fairly large, but obviously there's not enough storage space in them.

My thoughts on Xmas decor: The over consumption is possibly a response to young people trying to live and make the most out of their lives despite being unable to change most of the crappier aspects of today's world, issues such as climate change and the housing / medical affordability crisis for example, seem impossible to fix and cause anxiety when looked at hard enough (speaking from experience on the climate one). Aspects that can be controlled is the happiness surge you get from buying things. My second thought is that I have cats that I cannot train well enough it seems to not destroy the decor and so I do not decorate too much more than a few things that have special meaning to me like the things given to me by my mom or paintings me and my fiance did. Instead, when I go out I meaningfully try to enjoy public decorations like what the city might put up, or different 3rd spaces put up such as the local library or even the mall. This has saved me so much money and has helped me appreciate my surroundings a bit more.

Okay I am a traditionalist, no Christmas decorations or music till the day after thanksgiving! Also my family is a Christmas ornament collector type. Each member collects an ornament and each year you get a new one, and we take turns selecting different family members ornaments. So here’s my thing and I have always been this way: I love Christmas but NOT UNTIL AFTER Thanksgiving. I refuse to decorate for it until the day after Thanksgiving and will stick to it. I gave up black Friday shopping at least 10+ years ago and find that I’m much happier just relaxing doing some cleaning at home and setting up my Christmas stuff on that day or that weekend, then I am fully in the spirit of the season. I also refuse to watch any Christmas related content on YT until then too. I despise the super early bird Christmas content 😂. I shun all Christmas music until the day after Thanksgiving as well. Having a nostalgic vibe to Christmas is VERY important to me. I have lost most of my family elders so memories are everything. Pictures and older items… I like to keep my decor for as long as I possibly can. I may add a few new things here and there but I set up the same things every year and I LOVE it (so does my family). We are very focused on our gatherings (Christmas movie nights and dinners, etc) and traditions not stuff ❤️.

the new way every year is what really gets me. i think the tradition of using the same decorations adds a sense of warmth and nostalgia to the entire experience. my family has been reusing the same ornaments from when i was in kindergarten. i still have my favourites that i have claim to. that’s what makes decorating so fun. it’s a family experience for us, and we don’t even celebrate christmas. my neighbours decorate their yard every year with the same decorations, and we always look forward to when they come up, because it’s always a joy that lights up the street. the tradition, imo, comes from the repetition of the old, not revamping it with something new every year. it just feels so hollow

GUILTY!!!! I will admit... Christmas is my favorite time of the year. I do put up multiple trees. It was always something I wanted to do since I was younger. However, I have been overwhelmed by the amount of STUFF I have accumulated. Albeit a lot of it was handed down or thrifted. Even my trees are second hand. We just replaced all of the bulbs that needed replacing and boom, like new! so this year I'm streamlining. I agree that it does take a mental toll and feelings of shame bc of the amount of stuff. So I'm downsizing by rotating what I use, not putting it all out. Not buying a ton of new things. Swapping items with family and friends. And it is VERY time consuming. Which ends up being stressful bc I feel like I have to get it all done by some imaginary deadline. I do think social has had a big impact on the "I Need THAT!" affect. So I stopped watching them. I've changed gears and have been watching over consumption videos and am working to find a happy medium... Sorry for the long comment. ☺️

But when l got married I tried to do the same thing in my house and I just got overwhelmed with the amount of stuff and it just sucked my joy for the season because l spent so much time getting it all out and fixed just right. It takes me the length of time of the movie “White Christmas” so l just pop it in and l am done by the time for the last song to sit and enjoy. These influncers homes are so beautiful! But as you stated at the beginning of the video, they are sets and I wonder if they have a space or area where its just "theirs" and not for social consumption? Years ago when youtubing became a job for a lot of folks. I thought about it and for many reasons I didn't but two of the main reasons were the first being I didn't want to start a hobby for it become work and start resent it. The second was I didn't want to come up with content ideas especially back then. LOL When I was younger I over-consumed on a lot but mostly clothes. This year I have started to purge a lot of what I had and as I am going through my items. I see and have admitted to myself I had/have a problem. I had new "faux" leather moto jacket I never wore, shoes, pants, undergarments, never worn! Thankfully I am a part of my local Facebook group and asked where should I donate in my area. I am so thankful for all of those strangers who commented because I will be donating my new and gently worn clothing to women shelters and recovery centers! I think influncers have to move just as fast as companies with putting out their content! Even though I have cut down buying clothes, I still "window" shop online lol,, anyway I just noticed on Torrid a plus size retailer they already have swim suits out!! Its not even Xmas and they are already displaying bathing suits. When I worked in retail that is when I found out that companies are always a season or two ahead just to get the money because of how their business profits are projected.

On the subject of storage units: I don't know if it's like this everywhere, but where I live those storage unit lots are popping up everywhere! I feel like there's always a new self-store unit complex being built. I can see the appeal for sure, but I don't see myself getting one. For sure some people need them when they are renting a smaller place and looking for a different house, or if they have a business that requires some storage options. It would be nice to have storage for some seasonal things for sure. That's what I always have to say to myself when I go shopping somewhere. I'll see something cute but then I think, "Where will I store this?" I'm a food scientist and I adore food technology and innovative ways for preserving food, and I've always been a gigantic fan of freeze drying. There's a freeze dryer I've been eyeing for literal YEARS for making backpacking meals and preserving food from the orchard and things like that but I always have to come back to the knowledge that it would not be easy for me to store something like that in my current home. It's probably a good thing I don't have a storage unit lol. I think it wouldn't take long to fill up something like that so I think it's sort of like "portion control" to not have one. 😂

I have two Christmas decorations. A tiny tree and a homemade Santa cube display. The tree came from my cousin who I told that I didn't have any Christmas decorations growing up. The homemade decor came from my great aunt. I appreciate both of these little decorations because they make me smile and think of family but I will never outright get myself decor because I'm just not a festive person for Christmas.

This is such a relevant video. I’m really tired of people not living life in the moment. There is no thanksgiving here in America anymore. People are already decorated for Christmas here. They didn’t even get a chance to put up a turkey or pumpkin. It’s really sad. And such a waste of money. I do admit that I used to be like this, but I finally figured out what was more important.

Growing up my parents made more out of thanksgiving than Christmas.

One year I went crazy for Christmas decor and I mean crazy hit up every store (Marshall’s, Michael’s, JoAnn, Hobby Lobby, Target) I felt like I was Martha Stewart but in reality I was broke broke. I ended up just selling everything and now I celebrate Christmas with my church and my family. I don’t need to go all out for holidays. I’m just happy to be alive and get to live another year. Hopefully 2025 I will be cancer free.

The idea of spending on christmas each year is crazy to me. We've been using the same christmas decor for the past 20 years. Now that my kids are in school, they make some stuff at school that gets added to the tree, and obviously, I bought them stockings when they were born.

My dudes, it's time to go back to minimalism and bring that trend back in vogue again.

I have to admit that I revamped my fall decor with many new things. I love it. I’m sorry but it does bring me joy. It just looks so cosy and better than before. I don’t have tic tok but KZbin. I have added to my Christmas decor this year, too. I have a very downsized home now so I can’t totally go insane with purchases but close. You are right, I probably need therapy.
