Tuba is more appropriate, because it is close to (and often stands in for) "tenor tuba in B♭" in works such as _The Planets._ Whether it is actually the intended instrument is a matter of debate.

Some German bands don't even use cornets, just flugel horns. It's awesome seeing two full rows of flugels. The sound blends much better I think because it then means nearly all the instruments were designed by the same person, adolfe sax

From my experience, here in Sweden brass bands usually have both trumpets and cornets for different things. But brass bands are very rare here so it's possible that they just take the musicians there are.

British Brass bands use Cornets not Trumpets, its a sound thing. Cornets have a mellower sound, they are the "violins" of the band, if you will.

In Sweden we have what's called Brass (the material) sextetts. (Mässingssextett, not brassextett). It consists of F tuba, valve trombone, tenor horn (I Think it's called), alto horn, Bb cornet, Eb cornet. But these are also getting very rare, no one plays these instrument. That's a shame

A tenorhorn in Swedish is not the same as the tenor horn in English. A Swedish tenorhorn is more like a baritone and pitched in Bb. A swedish althorn is an English alto horn.

you'd be surprised. some people have a passion for certain things and spend money on little else. i also like John Richmond's idea, perhaps he has access to the instruments for some other reason but doesn't own them. also, it isn't actually too hard to find older & used but still very well-made instruments at a fraction of the new-made price, and beyond that, if you know what you're doing you can even take some that aren't in perfect condition and fix them up yourself. lastly, you can build a pretty impressive collection of instruments (or really anything) over the course of several years, you know, a cornet and a trombone one year, a euphonium the next. by the time a decade's passed, if you added the price of all of them together it might be quite staggering but you know, that's ten years to purchase all of them, lol.

@acheesetoasty14
@acheesetoasty14 8 жыл бұрын
There are no trumpets in British brass bands. I'm not sure what the exact reasoning for that is, but another interesting tidbit about the instrumentation is that every instrument in the band is conical except for the trombones which are cylindrical.
@brasschick4214
@brasschick4214 8 жыл бұрын
Brass bands are essentially composed of a matching set of brass instruments with conical bore called saxhorns. Developed mostly by Adolphe Sax I believe, hence the name. As for the cornet the conical bore gives a softer timbre than the trumpet which is harsher due to it's cylindrical bore and will blend better as part of the ensemble. This is useful as it does not always carry the melody and has to combine with the other instruments to make a balanced sounding chord.

Im about 7 years late but here some info on a few of these: Bb tubas are actually quite rare in brass bands compared to BBb tubas which are a lot bigger. Im honestly not super familiar with Bb's but Bb sit below the Eb tuba. Cornets are used instead of trumpets purely for a more mellow sound, allowing brass bands to be both bold and fanfare-like, or slow and hymn-like when they need to be. Tenor horn in British brass banding refers to what other EU countries call the alto horn, or a niche inbetween of french horn and baritone.

Glad to finally see an appearance of the "Alto (tenor) Horn" in you videos. Actually I would like to see a demonstration comparison of this instrument to similar pitched instruments (Eb/F) in the same range. For example the sound of it compared to Mellophone, low F Trumpet, (and also perhaps Frumpet, Solo Horn and maybe even French Horn.) I always hear they are "conical" but it seems to be it is somewhere between conical and cylindrical, like the cornet (or baritone.). Thanks.

Hi Trent, thanks for all the great videos, I find them really informative as a new brass player. I'm impressed by players (yourself included) who can switch between instruments, this is a necessity in a small band like the one I joined due to lack of players. Can you please explain how the fingering works for different instruments, especially the relationship between Eb and Bb instruments.
@TrentHamilton
@TrentHamilton 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Martyn, in the British brass band all instruments except bass trombone and percussion read treble clef. The fingering is exactly the same between cornet, horn, baritone, euphonium, Eb bass, and Bb bass. The only difference is the sound that comes out. This makes it easier to switch between instruments, although you need to adjust to the different sounds that are produced.

Does that makes the French Horn (which isn't part of this type of ensemble) the odd man out as far as fingerings? I played one one semester in High School so we could have two bands, and it was mostly the same, but one or two different fingerings.
@TheodoreBrown314
@TheodoreBrown314 8 ай бұрын
@@anthonykaiser974 In the modern brass family, French Horns are 100% the odd ones out in almost every way. Nothing against them, mind you, but so many things about them (fingering, harmonic patterns, bore, etc.) are in stark contrast with pretty much all the rest of the instruments still used

In brass bands, the tuba is called the bass. For a long time, I wondered why that was the case, then I realized that there was the tenor (horn) in Eb, then the baritone (horn) in Bb, so, logically, the next one should be the bass (horn) in Eb, then the (contra) bass (horn) in Bb. All four of those horns look similar, with an upward-facing bell tilted to the right, a rectangular shape, a full-tube, partially conical bore, and three upward-facing piston valves. It is possible that the tenor, baritone, and basses descended from or were influenced by the saxhorns, a family of conical bore, full-tube, tuba-shaped instruments that was intended to run all the way from contrabass to soprillo (piccolo), but could only practically extend to the alto in Bb, the same tube length as the modern trumpet, cornet, and flügelhorn.

I learned to play as a boy in a British type brass band, but for decades now I have just played jazz. So now when I listen to a brass band I do it with fresh ears. It strikes me that the baritone/tenor section of the band is overpopulated, giving the sound a tubby quality like a flabby body with a fat midriff. There are the trombones, the baritones and the euphoniums. The euphoniums get all the interesting music while the baritones get the easy parts. Nobody knows why there are both baritones and euphoniums inte same band anyway. With the soft sound of the cornets the brass band sounds rather vanilla. Of course top-of-line brass bands are brilliant and exciting, I'm talking about the normal amateur variety that I used to play in. Listen to Lester Bowies Brass Fantasy: one tuba, two trombones, one French horn and four trumpets plus Lester Bowie himself. Well balanced.

I know you have probably made a vid about this question in the past, but how much has it cost to acquire this magnificent collection of instruments? I would love to have a euphonium, but just that one instrument alone is already several hundred (if not, thousands) of dollars! Thanks.

Because, for example, if I play a middle C on my Bb Baritone (in TC), and my brother plays a middle G (TC) on his Eb alto/tenor horn, it sounds the same and the fingerings around it are the same. So it's easier for people to switch between instruments in the band when needed.

Saxhorns were a family of instruments that all had similar shapes (except for the alto, soprano, and piccolo members which evolved into the modern cornets) of upward-facing bells and partially conical bore. The contrabass, bass, bari, and tenor saxhorns evolved into the two bass horns, baritone horns, and tenor horns.

What are your thoughts about the balance of the British brass band? Analysing it like an SATB mixed choir, the soprano range is well populated by Eb, Bb cornets and flugel horn. The alto range is very thin: there is only the alto ("tenor" to the Brits) horn there. The baritone range is overcrowded: we have baritones, euphoniums and trombones. The glamorous euphonium gets all the interesting partis, the baritone mostly plays boring backbeat. Second baritone is the most boring part of the whole band. The bass range is well served by the tubas ("basses") and that ridiculous instrument the G bass trombone (thanks for your video about it!). Not very good balance. Saddest of all is the case of the alto horn. Potentially I could imagine a very sweet lyrical voice coming from it, unique among the brass instruments. But composers don't seem to exploit it. It nearly always stays in the background. Comments?
@TrentHamilton
@TrentHamilton 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Erik, I was thinking about doing a video on this at one point, but couldn't really think of a way to make it interesting. The SATB model doesn't really work too well for brass bands as we don't think in terms of SATB, but in four part music the parts are spread like this: Part 1: 1st cornet Part 2: 2nd cornet and 1st horn Part 3: 2nd horn, baritones, and trombones Part 4: Basses Euphoniums usually would be a part 5 all by themselves if included. Unfortunately, whilst this model works good for smaller groups, most major brass pieces don't treat the band as having four or five parts; in higher grade brass music each section is treated individually and given parts that use the individual characteristics of each instrument. With a four or five part model (a la SATB) you completely ignore the tonal differences between instruments. Cheers

@JamsBrosOfficial

Well, the Eb cornet allows for an easier experience up high. You don't necessarily "gain" range from playing a soprano cornet vs. a mezzo-soprano cornet (Bb, C, etc.) but the partials are further apart and can be hit accurately with less effort. Imagine a top C on a Bb cornet. That's a G on an Eb cornet. You know how you can accidentally hit both Bb and D when aiming for high C? Eb cornets eliminate that until you get to what would be high F above high C on a Bb cornet. Pardon my muddled ramblings! Hopefully you understood some portion of that ;)

so how do you differentiate between a bass trombone and tenor trombone just by the physical apperance
@MikuJess
@MikuJess 7 жыл бұрын
The most surefire way is that a tenor trombone will have either no triggers/valves or a single one, while a bass trombone will always have two unless it's an antique (see Trent's video on the G bass trombone for a neat history lesson!), though if it IS an antique then it's in a different key and noticeably larger. Tenors are sometimes but not always in a smaller bore than a bass, but they're still the same length and in the same key, so the triggers are definitely what you need to look for.

French horns are in the wrong key. All british brass band instruments are either Bflat or Eflat and all but the bass trombone is written in treble clef. It's done intentionally so that, for example, if needed more or less any member of the band can switch instrument and still be able to read the music and know what notes they're playing.
