Poor Lenny A. I think we separated the wrong pairs, lol. Shirley has no use for our Lenny, but I do have 5 eggs in the incubator. Laverne was our main breeder last year, and your Lenny did get in on some of that action, so I know he knows how 😂 Oh and he is 2 1/2 yrs old. Laverne is 2 😊 one thing about these girls, they lay down for the boys when they are ready to mate. Not like chickens who get "assaulted" by the roosters 😅 i do remember that Laverne was a little more discreet than Shirley, so they may have mated at some point if she's laying. Check the eggs, and if all else fails, I'm happy to share our offspring this year!

I honestly think the two of them just need a little more time getting used to their new digs. I'm also considering getting a few more Bourbon Reds; maybe once there's a bit of a flock in place (including another tom or two) Lenny will enjoy the competition! In the meantime, I gotta say that Lenny and Laverne have really become a part of our family. Lenny is on me like glue whenever I'm out there, and always joins our conversations whenever we're out in the barn talking. Laverne has started warming up to us, too, and we love her eggs. They're basically our pets! 😂

Sean please take a little coffee time to watch Ben Hollar talk about his COMPOST method with his animals called JUST MAKE YOUR OWN from last week. You are both basically in the same climate so it can be useful to learn a timesaving & great outcome of compost for your food growing. Best of luck for you & yours at the Yeoman Homestead!! I'm hoping your family will be able to get a wood chipper as you get rid of those trees that need to come down & make your needed compost after a few months this year.

Use your chickens to make your compost. We never have to buy any dirt. Our chicken run has a huge compost pile in it with wood chips, grass clippings, leaves, kitchen scraps, weeds, spent plants, tree trimmings as well as some wood ash. Once a month or so we scoop it out and start over. We also have four large enclosed heaps in the far backyard that we dump all the duck bedding and poo, rabbit bedding and poo as well as all the quail poo, grass clippings, shredded cardboard, leaves, wood chips, poultry scraps left over from butcher days, kitchen scraps, coffee grinds and any other organics we have. In the late fall once the garden has died back, we cover the beds with a good 5 to 6 inches of leaves, add in a 5 gallon bucket of chicken poo over the top and let it sit all winter. In the very late winter early spring we turn it in with a shovel. The garden beds are absolutely full of worms. Once turned in we let it sit for about a week and top it off with a good 3 inches of our homemade compost and start planting.North Jersey here and Broccoli, Cabbage, lettuce, swiss chard, radishes, peas, kale , spinach, mustard greens and collards are a good 5 to 6 inches tall and thriving. In our side yards we do a huglekultur mounds of logs, sticks, grass clippings, leaves and top it off with lots of wood chips. The chickens and ducks love digging through it looking for bugs and worms. It also helps build more soil and stop any erosion from massive rains we have been getting. It's also where we have our figs, elderberries, nectarine and apple trees planted. Wood chips are the only thing we have trucked in from the local tree guys, They drop it off free of charge. We get about 2 or 3 loads a year.

Sean, in the fall when we are closing up the primary beds in the garden we plant Crimson clover or Fava beans as green manure cover crops. It feeds the soil, and protects it from the rains we get. In the spring we cut down the cover crops and then spade them under. The soil is beautiful and soft. It keeps the weeds down as well. This is so successful that we do this every year.

For some reason I really look forward to sifting soil in the spring. I have homemade sifters with wood on the sides and different size wire. One is for potting soil - 1/4" - and fits in my potting bench. One is bigger -1/2" - and fits over my raised beds. The biggest - 1"x2" - is for over the wheelbarrow. I usually sift barnyard clean-up (cow manure and hay) that is "mature" but household and garden compost is a goal. At the moment the chickens reduce the household compost dramatically and the garden weeds and such I toss out of the garden, basically into pastures. When the sheep are near they wait for weeding time :) I think you could sift out a lot of rocks and roots and it would be worth your time, even with not many inches of soil/compost in some of your piles. I put rocks in my driveway and roots back in the working compost typically, when I'm working at home just in the potting greenhouse. This is an excellent slowly slowly project. I bring sieves to nursery school and the little ones enjoy the process too, so don't be selfish; share with Henry! Carrots in particular appreciate sifted soil :)

You need to put your chickens to work for making compost. We built a huge framed in box that we throw grass clippings, leaves etc...into. The girls scratch it poop in it etc...after about 2 months we scoop it out into a different pile that they can't get to and let it cook while making them a new batch to work on. I never have to buy soil or compost anymore.

Just a hint to make wood cutting easier. take a larger full log of wood, about 12" tall and set the pieces of wood you are splitting, on that log. It will give you a solid surface under the log so the ax won't bounce off.

We had quite a bit bigger stump that we used as a chopping block when we were kids. It was always in the same place and over the years it was surrounded by little chips of wood and had lots of nicks and gouges on the top. Boy that was a long time ago (60+ years). That chopping block also did service to despatch chooks for our Christmas and Easter roast dinners. We only ate chicken on special occasions. Hi from Australia

Maybe you should invest in a Shirley and Squiggly and Lenny may get an interest in Shirley and Squiggly in Laverne. In case you're wondering what I'm referring to, it's from an old show called Laverne and Shirley and their 2 geeky male friends Lenny and Squiggly. 😂 a lot of laughs back in the day, but it just might be worth trying 😊.

Hey Sean. On Monday, here in Montreal, we had 15c and clear skies. We went to the roof terrace at 3pm, as the moon began to cover the sun. There were huge crowds of people on all the roof tops around downtown Montreal, where I live. As the sun went dark, the temps dropped enough for people to pile on a second layer of clothing. The moon eclipsed and it went dark for about 90 seconds. As it got dark, all the buildings around me, their night time lights all came on. And then the screams and cheer from above and below us began. The people I was sitting with got very quiet and pensive. We took off our glasses to look upon the eclipsed sun. It was the most glorious vision I had ever seen. 90 seconds later and it was over. And we went on with our day. (Edit: after the fact) Are there pheromonal therapies you can get for turkeys? I don't think turkey IVF is a possibility. But mating pheremones might work, yes?

sheep sheep sheep. Last fall I had finally found a place that has pasture genetic sheep. I was about to buy from them when my world got shaken and flipped upside down so I put that on hold, but maintained contact with them. Then a couple weeks ago they let me know they are not planning to sell any this year. So Ive been hunting again, with not much luck. Tons of sheep, but looking for some that do not need grain

We only had a few turkeys when I was growing up, so I'm not sure how helpful I can be. However, we always had three hens to each Tom. My suggestion is to raise up a small batch of the same breed, hoping to get at least a few more hens and maybe a Jake for Thanksgiving or something. If your Tom thinks he has competition, maybe he would be more interested. But also I agree it could be the weather, especially if the hen is only just starting to lay eggs. Maybe incubate a few of the eggs for a short time to see if anything develops, also - Maybe there is breeding taking place when you're not observing them. But my gut feeling is you know your animals better than I and you should follow your gut feelings.
