Sure it is obvious to the viewers who’ve watched the many originals films they “referenced” but I’m sure majority of the viewers had no idea and thought they were watching something original. I was 13 when I watched barfi, I remember feeling so touched by the end scene and thinking “Bollywood is stepping it’s game” only to feel duped after watching The Notebook. Like Kautuk pointed out, where do you even draw the line between copying/stealing and inspiration/referencing/paying homage to. Although IMO this is definitely not “referential”

actually Tarantino was inspired to use the animated sequence in 'Abhay'. He (Tarantino) has stated it publicly. He was so impressed with the animated sequence in 'Abhay' that he decided to use a animated sequence in KIll Bill.

So many more knockoffs - Rafoochakkar with Rishi and Paintal was Some Like it Hot, Khel with Anil Kapoor Madhuri and Anupam Kher was Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Aitraaz was Disclosure and on and on.
