A terrifying monster turned pop culture icon. The invisible man has earned his place as one of the scariest Universal Monsters, plunging entire cities in dread racking up a body count of over 100 people. Claude Rains is the beast in the first adaptation of H.G. Wells' classic novel.

14:09 - I was recommending the 2020 Invisible Man film (for those who don't particularly enjoy old films) & played a clip from the trailer that got claimed. So apologies for the sudden jump-cut, I had to trim that part out. Cheers ;)

This is a great movie. I first saw it in the early 80's and was instantly hooked. (I have it on VHS, somewhere.) Great review.

Oh yeah, this was an instant classic from the writing alone. Processing the characters with such subtlety that is lacking in today's productions. Thanks Franko!

Great work, mate! I didn't know anything about the 30s version. Grew up with the Chevy Chase one. P.S. Keep up the high quality vids. Just need one breakout vid and the subs will come rolling in. 👊

The H.G. Wells novel is one of my favourite books, I didn't even know this film existed. It looks a lot like what I imagined while reading. Although film before the 60s is really hard to watch. (yes I am bingeing your channel).

I've never read the novel but this adaptation by what you're telling me was pretty good then. Yeah, most people can't watch films before the 60's, I absolutely adore black & white cinema. Check out the 2020 version & if you want a darker take on The Invisible Man try Paul Verhoven's Hollow Man. (i'm so happy that you're on a binge! makes me know i'm putting out good stuff haha, thank you!!)

Really looking forward to checking this out. And I had a good time with the modern remake.

It's absolutely worth your time for Claude Rains' performance alone, its very different from the modern version, but still packs a punch.

I got there and watched it. Wasn't bad at all and your conclusions were pretty similar to mine. I don't quite know why the special effects in the bedroom scene was so flickery. I thought it was a manual job to do therefor it could be better, the involved work should not that be more. Suggesting the 2020 Invisible man is fine, that was the first result I searched. Given the scenes you shared here it looks way more of a scary movie and I'm not into that. How far does that go?

Yeah its a pretty solid film, especially Claude Rains' performance. You should actually watch a couple of VFX videos on the bathroom scene, they did a lot of camera trickery & it was actually simpler than you think, but for 1933, the scene was groundbreaking. The 2020 Invisible Man is really, really good. It's not the same as the original, but in a good way. Not very scary, but the film makes you constantly feel as if there's an invisible man on screen & you share the sense of dread & paranoia our protagonist does. I highly recommend it. Plus it's written & directed by Leigh Whannell, an incredible screenwriter. (watch his movie 'Upgrade' for an underrated sci-fi gem)

@@TheUninspiredReviewer I agree, Rains was pretty good especially if we consider he only had his voice and sometimes his body language to convey his feelings. Where the film falls short is character building. I can see Dr. Kemp is egoist, but we have only one line hinting that. Therefor, I don't see why Griffin would think he will be an ally and a good minion. Kemp betrays Griffin right away. My other note is in general to this era of filming. We just left the silent era and it seems most actors are still in the past, very theatrical and overly dramatic. But that's just me. Upgrade, you say? That's a great movie! I certainly loved the cinematography of it, the fight scenes involve very precarious moves and how the camera follows it is just awesome! Memorable movie!

@@Sekir80 Plus it was the first film he'd done in over a decade, and his second ever 'on screen' performance. I agree with you 100% on the characters, it leaves room for a lot of personal interpretation on what makes them who they are. HAHAHA, no you're right, it is overly dramatic & sometimes reminds me of the 'acting' scenes from Singin' In The Rain, but that's just something I personally feel adds to its charm. Glad you enjoy Upgrade! I feel like nobody mentions it & it flew under the radar, but I've been a big Leigh Whannell fan since Saw & Insidious, so i've been monitering his career ever since.

@@TheUninspiredReviewer I didn't know this was his second on screen performance, way to go! So, it seems this is the day of The Invisible Man. Watched 2020 version just now. It was Insane, and I was quite restrained by saying that! There were some plot holes which could have been explained, but that would have slow down the film and never really added too much and the runtime was long anyway because of the direction, which, by the way, was awesome! The slow tension building and camerawork was absolutely necessary to achieve the dread it did. I must tell I don't like spoilers and you added a scene from it into this video. And, boy, I'm glad you did! It didn't spoil anything, but peeked my interest well enough. Great work! Thanks for raising my awareness about great stuff!

@@Sekir80 It was! His first was in 1920, and then this in 33'. HAHAHA, I told you it was really good! Very different from the original but turns it into a psychological horror with more focus on the victim instead of the invisible man. Plus the film had much stronger themes, that, coupled with the dread & paranoia of the direction worked incredibly well. I've seen it about a dozen times, with the most recent one being 2 weeks ago. Still entertaining every single time! Glad you enjoyed it mate, it hasn't gotten the recognition it deserves (like Upgrade haha), but i'm happy I could make you discover a little pearl in the vast Hollywood sea.
