It's not a masterpiece, but it certainly is underrated, especially versus Judge Dredd. He only took ammo off his fellow judges once (which undermines his running out of ammo scenes).

I can't agree that the third act is great. Or maybe by that point, the movie had already been too long, and I just couldn't get into it anymore, but I doubt it. These movies really have no reason to be longer than two hours especially when there is so little plot involved. I just don't get this trend of movies being longer than they should be. I say that as someone who has Lawrence of Arabia as one of his favorite movies. John Wick being in Japan could have been cut completely without anything really being lost, for example. Also, did no one really notice how many elements from John Wick 3 were kind of reused in Chapter 4??? Having Laurence Fishburne in the movie was a waste of money if you ask me because what is his character really doing here that couldn't have been resolved otherwise? There is more, but this comment is already long enough. The movie isn't bad, but for the most part, it felt just more of the same for me, and there are plenty of movies that already do that. However, I will always be grateful that the franchise revived well shot and choreographed action scenes.

Dredd was a masterpiece. Sure, it took some from the other successful movies of that time (raid!), but it did that with it's own flavor, which was pretty freakin awesome.

It’s absolutely extraordinary that the alternative world of Judge Dredd has not been embraced by the mandarins of the Film/Movie world by now. I for one am totally bored by the marvel and dc universes, they’re finite and have had their day in the sun. Time now for the darkness of Mega City ONE and Joe Dredd, what a fertile ground for the mandarins in my humble opinion.

I cant actually believe Dredd never took off because i dont know a single person that does not like this movie. Its perfect in every way for a Judge Dredd story. I cant believe how much it bombed.

This was a great remake of Dredd, it defo should have had more sequels shame that let's hope there will be another one, just let Urban reprise his role as Dredd.

No matter how hellish MaMa's life may have been, that does not excuse her self centered evil acts. And no matter how brutal and uncompromising Dredd may be towards criminals, he would never kill an innocent bystander. One might call them opposite sides of the same coin.

When I was a kid, I loved the -95 Stallone version the first time, and I liked it (remember I was a kid). When I saw the 2012, I didn't really appreciate it, because it was so different from the first version I saw. I watched both of the films last week, and maaaan has my taste for movies changed. Dredd really had a "Show, Dont tell" style which I really liked. Dredd being a 2D character just moving the plot forward, and Anderson being the actual character that has her "heroes journey". I think the 2010:ish movies got sidelined by the emergence of marvel movies, that diluted the audiences interest in anything that didn't have a huge story behind them.

9:15 Yes, there is no arc with DREDD, only a sutil one. His convictions are set in stone, and that is part of his virtues, yet in the end he was more open towards the rookie's talents.

The reason for the poor box office was the residual effect of the Stallone film. Which was a total disappointment for Dredd fans, and gained no new fans. I believe that if they had followed up a few years later, they would have had a huge hit. Wasn’t there some rights issues that put it on ice?

And PSI judge Anderson was a good enough character to have her own comic series. Chief Judge Dredd would be proud.

I have a vivid memory of going to see it at the cinema in 3D with my dad; who is a cinephile and upon leaving he commented that he had greatly appreciated the film and that it would eventually become a cult classic. No sooner said than done; 12 years later is a great movie. Karl Urban always expressed interest in making a sequel; Now that he has positioned himself with “The Boys” he should persuade his acquaintances to make a sequel to this underrated gem.

In a pre-shooting version of the script (with the title "Peach Trees"), Ma-Ma is obese but it's good they changed her to the what she's in the finished movie. Less stereotypical villainy and more of someone consumed by resentment from brutality and privation.

Some of the greatest one liners in history in that movie. I love the end, when his boss comes, and she asks him what happened, and after all they've been through, he says _"perps were ... uncooperative."_ Legendary understatement...

I saw the preview for "civil war" coming out this spring and had zero interest in watching the thing. I figured it would be a simple piece of political division propaganda in an election year..... Then I found out Alex Garland made it. Dredd was so good I have to watch this movie. Don't betray us Alex!

Aaah, I do think Dredd changes, near the beginning he makes a remark that Anderson failed the aptitude test and a fail is a fail (can't remember the exact quote) by the end, she loses her lawgiver (an auto fail) let's a "accomplice" go (all be it a forced one) and still passes Anderson. He doesn't change much but there is sooo progression there...
