I “liked” Frank, but it bothers me that everybody had a sympathetic view of him being old and alone. He is alone not because he is old, but because of the terrible choices he made in life. Frank killed one of his best friends among countless other people, and alienated his family because he always cared more about his destructive lifestyle than the family he raised. His family appears less and less in the film because as the film progresses, Frank recedes deeper and deeper into the mob, so he sees them less. Probably the best Netflix branded production ever.

That's what I'd been thinking! I don’t think he’s afraid of dying, I think he’s afraid of time. Whether or not he feels he’s life has gone by so quickly he now has to live with that and accept it, I think Scorsese is truly scared of dying and his death equating to nothing, being forgotten over time just like the disappearance of jimmy hoffa. Chris-I loved your insight and review of this movie! I only disagree on one small point you made about Frank and his daughter's lack of screen time together. One of the strengths of this movie is we never get to know Franks family because Frank himself doesn't really know who they are. He considers his family to be outsiders to the mob world so Frank completely disconnects from the family in order to protect them. . Scorsese uses this approach in Goodfellas. Hahaha oh my god. Dude, so many of those movies suck. Once upon a time in Hollywood... wtf was that stupid ending? Comedy? Satire? Ran out of ideas? So stupid and no point played off as violent “art.” Ad astra... don’t even get me started. Joker- over rated. Great acting but silly, melodramatic story that’s not nearly as “real” as people are giving it credit for. I mean frat boys can be douche bags, sure, but when’s the last time you saw a group of them start beating a crazy person to death on the subway lmao. And then he just blasts one and rolls out. Then they throw the abuse from his past in for the last second with no back story just so they can add some more fuel to justify his full breakdown. Ford vs Ferrari- a good movie but really just cookie cutter, Hollywood stuff. Nothing mind blowing Avengers- .... it’s like the 6th one and it’s a super hero movie. Are we listing this as a classic or something? Lighthouse- started out promising, and I liked the feel, until it became a pretentious, modern art garbage heap, where we are supposed to derive all type of super deep meaning in their game of “its up for interpretation.” No body knows what the fuck the TRUE meaning of this movie was, and anyone who says they do is just trying to sound smart Hahaha this is probably one of the worst years for movies ever. I loved how each main character has a distinct personality especially when it comes to Frank’s daughter. Frank has this weird relationship with her, Pesci feels sad every time he sees her and remembers that he couldn’t have a child, he tries to get closer to her but she is always terrified. But Al Pacino has this joyful character that DeNiro’s daughter loved him more than her own father lol.

Spoiler alert! That final scene; I am amazed how nobody noticed when De Niro met Pacino for the first time in the hotel and Pacino went to bed and left his door half closed. My first time here and as a boomer and life-long Scorcese fan I've got to say this reviewer is right on the money in his analysis of what could be the swan song of 20th-century American gangster movies. Chris Stuckmann has a discerning eye -- he is able to deconstruct the elements of a film that make it special and sensitize us to them without spoiling the experience of watching it for the first time. In this case the magic is in the legendary pairing of Scorcese and his New York criminal characters as played by Dr Niro, Pesci, Keitel, as well as a first for Scorcese, Al Pacino. I agree with the reviewer: it works, magnificently. We are presented with a portrayal of once-violent men in their contemplative years, faced with the consequences of their past. I know it sounds boring but it's not because we come to care so much about the characters. The de-aging process, once we've acknowledged it's at work, does not call attention to itself -- we accept the characters' appearance at earlier stages of their lives more readily than makeup could do because this digital process is almost seamless. Expect to see a lot more of this process in the future. If you have a Netflix account, there's a video interview available where the movie's principals discuss the project and their challenges. But I recommend that before you see it you watch the movie. Thanks to Netflix, this can be done on your home theater system. If you're like me, you don't miss the typical movie theater, with its filth, high prices, noisy audiences, and the distraction of multiple cell phone screens. I waited to watch this film on my big Sony at 4K, which produces a better picture than any cineplex projector can. Especially with a 3.5 hour film, it's nice to be able to pause the playback once in a while. Happy viewing and enjoy!

Great review. Lots I didn’t know. Think you overlooked the scenes where young Peggy is watching her father when certain news is on in the background or there is a newspaper article. I think she works out who her dad really is, and resents that Pesci’s character is behind it. To me, this is the most subtle form of character development I’ve seen and says a lot about Frank towards the end of the movie. Perhaps a cute moment of father and daughter early on might have served as a comparison of where the relationship started, but this would probably have been criticized as being too soppy or overtly flagging what is to come. I agree that the editing was astounding and the movie didn’t feel 3hrs 20 long.

One criticism I have is about the beating grocer scene, which lacked the realistic physicality of scenes from Goodfellas or Casino. Very much ‘lame’ ... but the actors are older now...

I was lucky enough to go to an early screening and your review is perfection. It’s EXACTLY how I feel. This movie is going to SWEEP the awards season. It’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.
