I “liked” Frank, but it bothers me that everybody had a sympathetic view of him being old and alone. He is alone not because he is old, but because of the terrible choices he made in life. Frank killed one of his best friends among countless other people, and alienated his family because he always cared more about his destructive lifestyle than the family he raised. His family appears less and less in the film because as the film progresses, Frank recedes deeper and deeper into the mob, so he sees them less. Probably the best Netflix branded production ever.

That's what I'd been thinking! Like, yeah, lonely old people are bound to make you feel some sort of empathy and pity for them, but we also gotta keep in mind that Frank, and everybody else involved in Hoffa's murder had it coming to them after years of crime at such a scale. They brought it upon themselves. You could say, that's how mafia works.

I don’t think he’s afraid of dying, I think he’s afraid of time. Whether or not he feels he’s life has gone by so quickly he now has to live with that and accept it, I think Scorsese is truly scared of dying and his death equating to nothing, being forgotten over time just like the disappearance of jimmy hoffa. When you get to his age, you can’t help but look back in your life and wonder what you could’ve done differently, or whether it was even worth it at all.

Chris-I loved your insight and review of this movie! I only disagree on one small point you made about Frank and his daughter's lack of screen time together. One of the strengths of this movie is we never get to know Franks family because Frank himself doesn't really know who they are. He considers his family to be outsiders to the mob world so Frank completely disconnects from the family in order to protect them. . Scorsese uses this approach in Goodfellas. I remember Karen Hill saying "we did everything together. No outsiders ever"

i want to discuss the ending so bad, that moment chris talks about will be burned in my brain forever. This is not a movie about gangsters, this is a movie about the life choices a man makes and the consequences it has. I also found really great the power that silence has in this movie. Scorsese is genius at working silence and tensions into film also his take on religious life and those big themes that have been going around his last few movies. sorry for the rambling, but i just watched it and found it amazing haha

I wish I could like this comment twice, it’s very true and her absence throughout the movie makes the bank scene even more tragic because you know frank has little time left in his life as there’s little time left in the movie and we’ve barely seen them together. Her absence is key to Franks arc, I respect Chris’s opinion but have to side with you on this one.

Hahaha oh my god. Dude, so many of those movies suck. Once upon a time in Hollywood... wtf was that stupid ending? Comedy? Satire? Ran out of ideas? So stupid and no point played off as violent “art.” Ad astra... don’t even get me started. Joker- over rated. Great acting but silly, melodramatic story that’s not nearly as “real” as people are giving it credit for. I mean frat boys can be douche bags, sure, but when’s the last time you saw a group of them start beating a crazy person to death on the subway lmao. And then he just blasts one and rolls out. Then they throw the abuse from his past in for the last second with no back story just so they can add some more fuel to justify his full breakdown. Ford vs Ferrari- a good movie but really just cookie cutter, Hollywood stuff. Nothing mind blowing Avengers- .... it’s like the 6th one and it’s a super hero movie. Are we listing this as a classic or something? Lighthouse- started out promising, and I liked the feel, until it became a pretentious, modern art garbage heap, where we are supposed to derive all type of super deep meaning in their game of “its up for interpretation.” No body knows what the fuck the TRUE meaning of this movie was, and anyone who says they do is just trying to sound smart Hahaha this is probably one of the worst years for movies ever. But what else is new? They get worse every year.

Frank has this weird relationship with her, Pesci feels sad every time he sees her and remembers that he couldn’t have a child, he tries to get closer to her but she is always terrified. But Al Pacino has this joyful character that DeNiro’s daughter loved him more than her own father lol.

I'll never forget DeNiro's line in Casino, "Normally, my prospects of coming back alive from a meeting with Nicky were 99 out of 100. But this time, when I heard him say "a couple of hundred yards down the road", I gave myself 50-50." These two guys are amazing together. Adding Pacino is the icing on the cake you put the file bar in. Can't wait to see this film!!

Thank you for mentioning that Doctor Sleep isn't making enough money at the box office. The Nice Guys, then Blade Runner 2049, and now Doctor Seep. It really depresses me that the Transformers movies make billions while great films like these underperform at the box office. It really says something about the taste of general audiences.

My first time here and as a boomer and life-long Scorcese fan I've got to say this reviewer is right on the money in his analysis of what could be the swan song of 20th-century American gangster movies. Chris Stuckmann has a discerning eye -- he is able to deconstruct the elements of a film that make it special and sensitize us to them without spoiling the experience of watching it for the first time. In this case the magic is in the legendary pairing of Scorcese and his New York criminal characters as played by Dr Niro, Pesci, Keitel, as well as a first for Scorcese, Al Pacino. I agree with the reviewer: it works, magnificently. We are presented with a portrayal of once-violent men in their contemplative years, faced with the consequences of their past. I know it sounds boring but it's not because we come to care so much about the characters. The de-aging process, once we've acknowledged it's at work, does not call attention to itself -- we accept the characters' appearance at earlier stages of their lives more readily than makeup could do because this digital process is almost seamless. Expect to see a lot more of this process in the future. If you have a Netflix account, there's a video interview available where the movie's principals discuss the project and their challenges. But I recommend that before you see it you watch the movie. Thanks to Netflix, this can be done on your home theater system. If you're like me, you don't miss the typical movie theater, with its filth, high prices, noisy audiences, and the distraction of multiple cell phone screens. I waited to watch this film on my big Sony at 4K, which produces a better picture than any cineplex projector can. Especially with a 3.5 hour film, it's nice to be able to pause the playback once in a while. Happy viewing and enjoy!

Yay! Real films are returning! Parasite, The Lighthouse, Ford v. Ferrari, and The Irishman! That whole cinematic universe and Marvel superhero era, while it was really fun, has become so tiresome and repetitive by now. Glad to see that there are still filmmakers out there that aren't sticking obsessively to the Marvel formula like alot of studios these days have been doing.

Not to suggest Marvel movies should be celebrated as the best movies ever made, but box office returns hardly suggest they're over, and I really don't see how a political thriller like the Winter soldier is the same movie as as Teen dramedy like the MCU Spiderman movies. And comparing Mafia movies to Comic book blockbusters is like comparing a dildo to a banana, they're both intended for very different markets.

I was taught from an early age, that silence in cinema can indeed be golden. The Quiet Earth was the most extreme example of this that I can recall from my childhood, and I'm still overjoyed every time a director allows the audience to digest fully what's going on. This is grade-A Scorsese, an absolute triumph.

It’s an epic, expertly made masterpiece. The “drag on” scenes did not effect me at all, I barely noticed because of the stellar performances, and I truly loved Pesci’s newfound peaceful demeanor for this. Pacino took this film over the rapids, folks...he blew it out of the water...and I was on the edge of my seat through all of his antics and drama and interactions. 5/5 stars. Easy.

Love the radio analogy. Another detriment to modern cinema is “mtv editing.” Fast, busy camera and cuts. So great to see a movie that doesn’t flash like that. Kudos also to Knives Out for same reason.

Great review. Lots I didn’t know. Think you overlooked the scenes where young Peggy is watching her father when certain news is on in the background or there is a newspaper article. I think she works out who her dad really is, and resents that Pesci’s character is behind it. To me, this is the most subtle form of character development I’ve seen and says a lot about Frank towards the end of the movie. Perhaps a cute moment of father and daughter early on might have served as a comparison of where the relationship started, but this would probably have been criticized as being too soppy or overtly flagging what is to come. I agree that the editing was astounding and the movie didn’t feel 3hrs 20 long.
