Fellow Legends, welcome! Today we dive into another excellent Fat Files video, this time covering the IRS. The Joker from Batman notoriously comments on why he doesn't mess with the IRS, and I think it's time for a discussion regarding how taxes are handled in the US. I absolutely recommend that you go ahead and check out The Fat Electrician and The Fat Files as well as the original video to show some support for the source material!

The fact we pay 200$ for a bill is outrageous and if a politician campaigned by saying he'd make the IRS tell us what we owe them everyone WOULD VOTE, for him specifically.

that doesn't protect you from IRS changes for instance this year I only got 16$ back this year from the feds and my tax person advised me to fill out the form to manually increase how much gets deducted by the feds so that I don't and up owing them money so having a tax professional handle you're taxes definitely has advantages

Being European, until now I had heard a lot of people from the US complain about how badly it sucks to file taxes, but nobody had ever actually explained to me how the system works. But now, having heard The Fat Electrician break it down... Damn, I totally get it now, that sounds absolutely asinine. (For the sake of reference, in my country, at the start of every tax year, the tax administration gives you an estimate of your expected incomes and deductions for that coming year, based on the previous year's earnings and deductions, which determines your tax percentage. You can either accept it as is, if your incomes are likely to stay the same, or adjust as needed. Then during the year, all your income is taxed at that %, and at the end of the year a tax report is compiled for you. If you overestimated your income, you get tax returns. If you underestimated your income, you have to pay the difference. And all this happens on a handy and easy to use (by the standards of a government website anyway) online portal.)

Poland here. Our tax system is whacked but not som much. At least the gov tells me how much I'm expected to pay if nothing changes at my job. Got 35$ tax refund this year since I started a new job last september. (BTW that was an aproximate conversion from PLN to USD)

Seeing bureaucracies as a kind of living being makes sense. Not sentience, per se, but bureaucracies are well-known for adapting in insane ways to continue their own existence. They will expand, absorb other bureaucracies for nourishment, attack those who threaten its existence, mutate if their original purpose no longer exists....

Yeah. It's why Demo Ranch will film intros in the safe or have other guns visible on the range. Brandon did a vid recently with other KZbinrs that came for a range day (can't remember the channel, but they had Destiny with them), and he showed them around the shop, showed some cool guns etc and he was asked how much he's spent on guns and he answered "upwards of a million dollars". That's definitely a need to write off those costs 😂

Technically you are required to pay quarterly estimates if you are self-employed, they don't come after you each quarter if you don't, they just add penalties and interest which accrue until you pay.

I think I watched a video at some point that explained, that if the IRS reported the criminally obtained income to the feds, it would be self-incrimination, so it would be unconstitutional and against the fifth amendment for the IRS to force you to report your income from criminal activities. But because they don't report it forward, they can force you to report it, and penalize you if you fail to report your income from criminal activities. And I suspect at least part of the reason the IRS doesn't tell you how much you owe is, that then criminals could say, that they just paid what they were told, and they were not told to pay taxes for the profits from their criminal activities. The current system is better because you get to tax criminally obtained income, and if criminals don't pay, they get arrested for tax evasion, at least if IRS gets to know they have criminal income. I don't remember what the source for this was, though.

You as a taxpayer can make modifications to your 2023 taxes in 2024, up until April 15th. If you contribute to an IRA (for example), you can choose whether your contribution is a 2023 or 2024 contribution. That still doesn't make tax code changes for 2023 after 2023-12-31 _fair_ but there are some equivalents.

There's actually a rather fascinating economics subject regarding spending that's relevant here. There's 4 groups of spending. You spending your own money. You spending someone else's money. Someone else spending your own money. Someone else spending someone else's money. It's harder for you to buy a $70 steak dinner with your own money in comparison to someone else dropping that same exact money using someone else's money. Coming across this really put into perspective why there's things that don't ever get done and run into fiscal issues.

It is only a problem to not file if you owe them. If they owe you, they will happily keep it. It is ALWAYS illegal to not pay your taxes, if owed. It is not always illegal to not file. The IRS reporting your self reported crimes to the feds would be a violation of constitutional rights. Forcing you to self incriminate.

I'm all for making things simpler here (without violating rights of course). Just becauese you run a business. It doesn't mean things have to be complex. Owning your on business is already it's own challenge. If there is a way to file your taxes and be done sooner/simpler. I don't see the problem. Love his take on bureaucracy. Never thought of it as a giant and organic AI before. It works well. Though I'd say it's more cyborg. Since it's a combination of digital and organic systems.

18:35 I think these regulations are there to have people who are currently (current tax year) being involved in criminal or even civil court cases pay up for any exposed illegal activities/gains a tax for or rather against criminals, which with the state of the USA justice system is mostly another tax on the poor.

23:57 If you have enough spare cash - you can donate, what you owe for [year X] - to a, or several, registered charity/ies, and get a tax write off for that/those donation/s: and pay 0 taxes. It's all legal, above board. So you can control where the money goes which *would* be paid in taxes: but you still lose that money. You're just paying that money to charity/ies rather than to the federal government. Also: *tax evasion* - not criminal activities - is what has jailed a lot of syndicate bosses. Famously: Al Capone. He wasn't jailed for murder, bootlegging, extortion, prostitution or racketeering - nope, tax evasion for not paying the money earned *from* his criminal activities.

The standard deduction is the same for everyone so unless you have itemized deductions above the stamdard, which as he said could be as simple as a checkbox on yes or no, they could send you what you owe based on legal income. They shouldn't be taxing illegal income, people should be getting arrested for it.

@@joshuawillingham6363 I never fully understood taxes as I just usually fill out the same other deductions I qualify for every year. The IRS doesn't know (or maybe they do and don't care) about illegal cash business they see it as any other business. If you say sell weed and it's illegal where you are the Government wants to know about it same for say sex workers. It's how Al Capone got caught mainly.

Devils advocate: the US has quite a few credits that aren't automatically accounted for, yes the IRS has your W2, but if they send you a letter saying how much you owe, most people might look at it say "yup that was my income" and forget to check for eligible credits. also saying that only 13% of the population would need to customize their return is a tad misleading, you also need to factor households (or lack their of) the IRS doesn't necessarily know who you're claiming as a dependent, so you'd have to file that manually at least once, and redo every time you gain/lose a dependent. you also need to factor in married couples who file separately. all that being said, it would still be a net benefit to have the IRS automate this shit. Side note, I've heard that the reason you have to report crime income is so that they can add another charge in case other charges don't stick, like didn't the US get a mob boss on tax evasion or something?

The reason the IRS does it the way they do is because people living paycheck to paycheck wouldn't have the money to just pay a large tax bill. So, they take their cut up front, and (if you don't owe) then you basically send the IRS a bill for the difference.
