And on this day, Kip learned about Project Habakkuk, and pykrete. Pykrete is the combination of wood pulp and ice. The story goes that, at a demonstration, a service pistol was shot at an ice block, and the ice shattered. The next shot at the block of pykrete, ricocheted off and grazed an admiral. Very fascinating story to look in to.

That was Lord Mountbatten, and Admiral Ernest King, a man who already required no additional reasons to hate the English, was grazed in the ankle by the round. The best irony was that Pycrete was an incredible idea that would entirely work in the North Atlantic. They parked the prototype miniature ice ship in a harbor and it took a long time to melt, but was maintained during its test life by a 1hp cooling pump.

Fun fact: the designer of the Mosquito - Ronald Eric Bishop - went on to design the Vampire, the first ever fighter to exceed 500mph, the DH.108 the first British aircraft to break the speed of sound and the Comet, the world's first jet passenger airliner. I love finding out connections like that, just like the man who designed the Lancaster Bomber went on to design the Vulcan Bomber. If you put both those planes next to each other you'd have no idea or guess that the same man designed both. Same goes for the designer of the SR-71 and his early aircraft designs.

The German Moskito was the Ta-154 by Focke-Wulfe. If I remember rightly, in addition to the whole "we don't think a wooden plane is a good idea" mindset, there was also a lot of in-fighting amongst German aircraft manufacturers. Money and prestige were on the line to have their designs be the war-winners, so if one firm was losing out to the other, the losing firm would pull every string it could to trip up the opposition. Also, I think production of the Ta-154 was delayed because the Brit's and Americans bombed the factory that produced the glue needed to make the wood hold together in the right shapes properly.

09:58 : To paraphrase Laserpig : "The British's plan was to use their ally to take the brunt of the assault and when that failed they 'Wallace and Gromit' their way to victory" While we're talking of WW2 airplane shenanigans there was the time where France converted an Airliner into a bomber named "Jules Vernes" whose call to fame was to bomb Berlin ... during the battle of France. It didn't do a lot of damage on its lonesome with its payload but imagine the German high command getting a call saying "Berlin has been bombed" and wondering how that happened (by taking the long way around, flying along Dutch and Danish coasts then the Baltic).

Project Habakkuk or Habbakuk was the woodpulp ice aircraft carrier idea. Pykrete, named after Geoffrey Pyke was super tough and resistant to melting. A block of ice will shatter if you shoot it with a shotgun, but a block of pykrete will make a small crater at best. So if you could pull off a ship with a 50tf thick hull, the U-boat crews are gonna cry. Crazy idea but I love it

In some of the video games I've played that had the Mosquito as a selectable craft you can pilot, it's always been one of the more fun options, thought always had the Fighter-Bomber role. Mayhaps not the most durable, but like in Dark Souls, if you don't get hit you don't gotta worry about dying. Also I think a Mosquito was involved with dropping a fake bomb on a fake Germain airstrip, which that alone is just some extra British trolling.
@commandercritic9036
@commandercritic9036 3 ай бұрын
The story behind that is the following… the Germans thought they’d troll the Brits and Americans by building a fake airfield, complete with fake wooden planes and empty buildings. The British respond by flying a bombing run over the fake airfield, and yea, dropped wooden bombs on it. Can’t remember if they used the Mosquito, but it would be fitting, what would also have been fitting is if one of the fake wooden bombs had a message on it reading “Nice try Chaps 😜”

Great explanation of the Mossie - minor glitch, yes Mossie operations attacked Gestapo HO's but Operation Jericho was the Amiens prison raid - to blow down the walls and allow captured resistance fighters to escape (or die maybe) since they had links to Overlord. Jericho, clue in the name. Mosquito Teste had a 6pdr anti tank gun - great U Boat hunter. They also dropped bouncin bombs and torpedoes. Remarkable, beautiful aircraft.
@lordsylph414

a minor correction, Operation Jericho was a mission to bomb a military prison that was holding over 800 French resistance prisoners, including some very important members who knew a LOT about the upcoming Normandy invasion. the raid had two goals, bust up the prison so they can escape, and kill the prisoners who don't escape by destroying the prison the raid he's actually talking about is just called "The Oslo Mosquito Raid"
@weldonwin

Destroyed by a fast bombing raid of British Mosquitos. And the factory kept the only copy of the formula for the glue there so when the factory burned down they lost how to make the glue too. They tried to come up with a new glue but it dissolved the wood making the German plane tend to fall apart.

Point of order secundus: During the Battle of Britain, the Spitfire gets all the glory for being the most cutting-edge tech fighter available, but the Hawker Hurricane was the one that got it done. This plane was made of metal tubing and wood with fabric on any non-load bearing sections of the plane. It's basically using late WWI tech but in monoplane form. The Hurricane accounted for over 60% of the RAF's confirmed kills against the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain but since it was sent out to kill bombers and transports, it didn't get the glory of going one on one with the Bf 109. And though the 109 was a superior aircraft in nearly every aspect, the Hurricane could and did kill 109s on the regular. The Hurricane was later relegated to being a fighter-bomber and then was developed further into the Typhoon and Tempest, the latter being THE low-altitude fighter of WWII which could face the Me 262 in a head-on fight and have even odds of winning said fight.

Point of order here: for the same strength, metal (specifically aluminum) is VASTLY lighter than wood as a rule. De Havilland got lucky in that he could apply concepts involved in the newest metal planes and then developed an insanely good plywood formula that could handle that strain. What made the Mosquito so good was that it could get close to the same performance as the latest Aluminum stressed-skin tech but using resources that weren't as expensive.

the mosquito was britain's answer to its comical lack of metal. the brits got bushwacked so hard during the blitzkrieg that they had basically nothing to defend themselves at the time and importing metals from other territories was either, a huge pain in the ass due to submarine warfare or they would not make it in time. So the brits came up with two answers, recycle every type of metal possible and wood. Because a wooden gun with a pipe on it was better than having no gun at all.

The Bismarck was crippled by an airborne torpedo launched by a Fairey Swordfish. The torpedo disabled a rudder just as the Bismarck was turning hard - condemning it to circle slowly until it was surrounded and pummelled to pieces.

It kinda feels like TFE made it seem like the mosquito was the only wooden plane at the time, which wasnt the case, most of the soviet Aircraft at the time were also made out of wood like the Yak figters

@@Mr-bw7yi if it works it ain’t stupid. Glue some C4, fit them with a few AAA bateries, give the controller to 12 year old, and launch a thousand of them a destroyer. At the very least the crew of that ship are going to need to get on deck to shoot them down.

I always thought that the Zaku in Gundam was an allegory for the Soviets (Russians). I never thought that it could have been applied to the Nazis (Germans). 🤔 Now I want to rewatch them just to make a different analysis of them!🤨

My theory as to why America uses the metric system for our ammo is so the enemy and their drs aren't confused as to what just git them or what they are pulling out of the ones that are wounded.

7:35 "What is an airplane but a boat in the sky?" No, that would be a zeppelin. The equivalent of a plane in water would be a hydrofoil.
@Cmoss114
@Cmoss114 Жыл бұрын
Why do you think airplanes use airports? Air "ports" just like a ship uses ports. Also a planes number is referred to as its ship number. The pilot of a plane is known as ....... its captain. Planes = sky boats
@DeHerg
@DeHerg Жыл бұрын
@Cmoss114 Planes rely on dynamic lift, aka airflow over the wing. Boats swim due to buoyancy (like a zeppelin), a boat that stops in water does not sink, a plane in the air does.
@Cmoss114

@DeHerg im not arguing how a boat and a plane work bubs. I gave several examples of how humans essentially consider planes to be ships. They are not opinions they are facts. You can choose to accept them or not. I don't really care

@Cmoss114 You just gave a few examples of linguistic carryover because people had to name these things something. To think that means people mentally equate the two is kind of retarded to be honest.
