My issue with cosmic smash is that you can shift yourself to the left and right via the controllers, which is a no-no in VR games like this since you can falsely place your body in the room you are playing in. Your brain thinks you are one place, but the game has shifted you artificially. I nearly punched my wall thinking i was a foot further to the right than i actually was. Make sure you are in a REALLY large room. Even then, you might end up pulling your system over.

Aside from the writing being weird linguistically, 2077 is also weirdly written "cyberpunk" in general (spoilers); In his mountains of dialogue, Johnny has one single line about watching corporations 'take land and water from the people', but that's not even the reason he opposes them. He's mad at one particular corporation that's got a 'Ubik'-type product, because he thinks it's crossing the line to own human souls, and he targets that corporation exclusively. Okay, he's not the usual subaltern kind of punk protagonist, that's fine. But then there's a lot of dialogue about how even this limited resistance on his part is just the product of his own silly teenage rebellion and ego. In the conclusion of his story, he 'grows up' from opposing unbridled capitalism and corporate power. He drives through the sunlit city at the end, commenting on how beautiful it is, if only he'd stopped being angry long enough to notice. Meanwhile, every evil corporation remains standing around him, carrying out the most profane shit imaginable... but, on other people, not him. He goes and buys an expensive designer guitar at a boutique shop -- hey kids, just be rich enough to ignore systemic oppression! Then there's that whole quest ridiculing communist and anarchist theorists as deranged crackpots -- ideologies about worker democracy and decentralized power respectively -- while ostensibly being a game about how bad corporate oligarchy is. The entire story almost shockingly has nothing to say... about anything. 2077: The cyberpunk genre, brought to you by neoliberals!

While I agree that it is written weirdly, by your description, it sounds like Johnny is an accidental reflection on a Silicon Valley bro culture that existed a decade or so ago, with their "unicorn startups" and Google buying up robotic startups by literal hundreds.
@JazGalaxy

I'm so happy you wrote this because I didn't get very far into the story and ultimately bounced off the game because I felt like it wasn't ABOUT anything. I'm a big fan of cyberpunk and games like Shadowrun, Rise of The Dragon, Snatcher, etc. but those games always felt like they had a point of view. Cyberpunk felt like it had NOTHING to say about anything it was depicting. I feel like they need to watch a lot more anime like Cowboy Bebop, Gunslinger Girls or Violence Action. Art where the point of a bleak situation is to highlight the beauty or humanity that exists even in the depths. A plant growing in the cracks of a burned out building. It felt like CDPR was actually in LOVE with the smut and didn't actually have any opinion on humanity at all.

Making cool characters is hard and i feel like non of these hero shooter games are doing it, at least for me, so when they're throwing wild and wacky colourful cosmetics at them and expecting me to be floored by the content i'm not on board i'm just bored, you need to make cool characters first. Remember when Street Fighter 3 came out and everyone was put off by the weird new cast of characters? That's how i feel about almost all modern games, except with SF3 decades later people would start to appreciate the cast for how different they are in the franchise, whereas we're not playing most of these hero shooters decades later so we're not building up to any nostalgia or novelty, it just looks crap then the servers get shut down.

That's both fascinating and also completely reasonable. What was it, IRC where you had numbers backing your screen name but you never actually knew the numbers because it rarely surfaced? It may not have been IRC but it was SOMEthing like that. Meanwhile, I had a conversation with my 15 year old niece the other day where I asked her if she had ever actually had a phone conversation with anyone and she said no. Unless it was asking where someone was, it's strictly text. The idea of having an actual back and forth conversation where you go from topic to topic has never happened for her.

Quest 3 is phenomenal. I had a 2 and bought a 3 just to stay "current" and I was blown away by how necessary it is. It's not just an upgrade, it's a new bottom level in terms of quality of the experience. I kept seeing people saying they would buy a Quest 2 because it was on sale, but I was like, "NO. Save the extra money if you have to. It makes NO sense to buy a Quest 2 now when Quest 3 is the new bottom level of acceptable experience for VR." It really takes it to the next level.

Re. the local/online multiplayer thing, I think that would be a good use of (modern) AI. It could learn from online players, complete with mistakes, letting you play Quake 3 or Rocket League against non-ninja opponents ever again. Maybe training/running an AI would require too much preparation & real-time processing for the idea to be practical though. I also feel like without a human witnessing what I do in a PVP game, none of it'd matter to me. Maybe it could have a persona consistent between games, and the player could make parasocial friends with it and feel socially invested in games against it as they might against random humans.

A lot of TNG/DS9 Star Trek is pretty explicitly anti-imperialist in a way that felt like the writers knew Chomsky and Gramsci and those kind of guys. There are actually episodes that I feel are meant to contrast the Federation's behavior against, say, the United States'. Like this one time, they've been in talks with a planet about membership for mutual benefit. It seems this planet has a very egalitarian society, useful technology, all around a great addition to the ol' Fed. Picard finds out they actually have this one demographic of people that they basically treat as subhuman. That group begins to threaten organized civil revolution. The prime minister presiding over this inequity asks his prospective new ally Picard for help in crushing the dissidents. At this point the USA would already be sending in machine guns and cocaine. Instead, Picard tells the prime minster that maybe they'll talk again when they learn how to respect human rights. Then he turns the Enterprise around right there and bails, leaving all the advantages the planet offered to the Federation on the table. It's true that Starfleet is organized like a military, but I think the two GOOD shows are thoughtful in depicting how they conduct themselves ethically. If anything, I think with the prime directive the Federation might even be overcorrecting against imperialist motives, because there are situations where it seems like it'd be an unambiguous good to interfere with another society, but they refuse to on principle. Wow, I miss Star Trek!
@xBINARYGODx
@xBINARYGODx Ай бұрын
Yup, the federation doesn't really expand unless its to places no one lives - otherwise, people are asked if they want to join, and if they don't want to, they are basically left alone and permitted to cross Federation space as much as they want. interstellar setup doesn't need to be imperialist - they have access to basically unlimited energy to do what they want without taking over anyone's sh!t.
@shoopusdawhoopus

Federation has a military command structure because it's incredibly efficient and gets stuff done, which is attainable because no one has pride or ego to get in the way. jeff probably thinks it's imperialist because of the uniforms, lol.

@JazGalaxy

@@shoopusdawhoopus Well, no, it's Imperialist because it's imperialist. It's not real, so one can't discuss the issues realistically, but the Federation only works because the show is written for the Federation to always be right. As soon as the one guy who votes not to join the Federation gets overruled, his personal point of view is going to eb that they have been taken over by an Empire. Everything is just a point of view.

the actual standout problem of cyberpunk's 'american' verisimilitude was the way the characters speak. they constantly drop pronouns which is common in polish but is absolutely not common in american english. it's a continuation of the same kind of dialogue writing that was present in the witcher but didn't stick out so terribly in that fantasy setting. i personally can't stand the dialogue in cyberpunk for a few reasons, but that is a large one. it's stilted and everyone talks like fucking yoda.
