I'm an 80 yo and was a JW during the 50s and early 60s. There wasn't even such a thing as a "great tribulation" in their teachings then. I saw through them during my teens but my poor younger sister (75 yo) still believes in it even though she was disfellowshipped decades ago and her sons and grandchildren and now great-grandchild shun her. My mother suicided in 1967 after being disfellowshipped and it affected our family with a terrible depression, resulting in the suicide of my brother and (another) sister years later. I loathe the organization that brought all this about.

My JW bro used to get us all over to his house for a big spaghetti feast and chocolate cake homemade for dessert-mmm. My parents travelled far to get there. But then right there and then at the feast, bro would start hammering away at the end of the world in 1975 and no one would argue but sit looking agitated, everyone concentrating on their plates because no one could get in a word. People would feign fascination at the dog who just sat there waiting for food, or would try to act impressed by the patterns on the tablecloth! Then bro would persecute Mom for wearing a little gold cross on a chair around her neck that she’d had since she was a child. On and on about how Jesus died on a “torture stake”! “Pick up your ‘torture stake’ and follow me!” All that. Mom would break down in tears, the family divided and choking on slithery spaghetti strand. Dad would say:”Enough!” and take mom and leave. Bro would look at us (new recruits, young and stupid), and say: “Did you see Satan working there?!?” It was all so horrible. That is persecution!

I had an aunt who was deep into the religion, pioneering whenever she could and being "exemplary" in every way. I remember being really discouraged after a day in the service and she told me that it ultimately didn't matter if people responded, that Bible prophecy just required that the 'good news be preached in all the inhabited earth.' She believed that not participating in the ministry delayed prophecy and every moment we gave to the ministry was vital, valuable. And now, this. After decades of devoting her life to the JWs, to the point of staying with an abusive husband, up til the day she died. My heart just breaks...

When you think about it, the very act of JWs preaching is a bad thing for non-JWs. WT teaches that if a person hears the JW message, and rejects it, they are doomed for destruction at Armageddon. Conversely, if a person never hears the JW's message, they at least have a hope of a resurrection. That being said, by their own logic, JWs are condemning almost everyone they preach to by the very act of preaching.

When you think about it, the organization's leadership, from Russell up through the current GB, have built and continually modified their own belief system based loosely on the scriptures. But the system doesn't hold up internally, it's full of inconsistencies, gaps, and contradictions. Instead of continually refining the system and improving it, they're at the point now where it's collapsing. Every adjustment they attempt to make now creates even more problems in the system, and it raises more questions about it than it answers. They say they can't be dogmatic about things, but it's exactly because they HAVE been that they're in this state. Now that they're backtracking and even telling people they're not inspired or infallible, I think more Witnesses are going to question their faith, perhaps not in God, but certainly in the organization.

With Catholics or Protestants or Baptists, for example, they have a "closed" system that needs no proof for their faith. They make no claims that require anything further than their interpretations. With Witnesses though, a foundation of their belief is the imminent destruction of this system and a new order established on Earth by God. The key word is imminent, as in "any moment now". That requires proof, and if that proof doesn't come, they're eventually forced to regroup and change their system, unlike most Christian religions. They've boxed themselves in because of their dogmatic stance.

Third generation born in here. I left mentally as a child and physically as a young adult.None of it makes any sense. These are the questions I’ve had over the years based on whatever the teachings were at that time. If Jehovah “knows hearts” why were JWs told they would have blood on their hands if they didn’t go door to door? Was Jehovah going to scoop in at the last minute and save everyone with a good heart or not? Why would millions of people be slaughtered that were never witnessed to? There’s no way every human on this planet would have been preached to. Why would babies be killed along with their unbelieving parents? The 144,000 is a symbolic number that refers to those in the Old Testament who didn't receive baptism but were righteous. The JW's love to take symbolic numbers and make it literal but they don't want to take the whole meaning behind the 144,000 literally, because it refers to 144,000 Jewish virgins, last time I checked I don't think governing body members are Jewish virgins lol. But you can also see that's why it refers to the mark on their foreheads (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit)

@@rockpadstudios that my friend, is the results of protestantism. You have to question the authority of every single religious denomination in order to get to the truth. People thought that the Bible was self-interpreting and the result; hundreds of different Christian denominations all claiming to have the truth. On what basis can anyone claim themselves as the arbiters to interpret the scriptures the way that they do? This is why I went from JW to Catholic. The Catholics and even the Eastern Orthodox have the infallible authority of Christ. Bishops can trace back to the apostles whom were taught by Christ himself. No other denomination can make that claim. Everyone else goes off of their own interpretation of the Bible or their own claims of having some sort of dream or spiritual realization. It's all BS. Once you start reading church history and you start reading the early writings of the early church fathers, you will start to notice how for the first 500 years, the early church fathers were all in line with baptism in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the Trinity (Even if the word wasn't coined, the doctrine was still there), true worship via incense and the Eucharist, as commanded by Christ himself in John 6 (also in affirmed in Paul's letters and prophesied in Malachi 1:11), and the threshold hierarchy of Priest, Bishop, and Deacon.

Anyway, lately I’ve had so many tricky questions come up that every doubt I might have had has gone away. I started this study not to get baptized, I’ve never wanted it- I did it because this “religion”(?) looked weird and I wanted to know more about it. And now I know more about it, and I feel sorry for these who are a part of it, especially the born in. I’ll keep on with the study, if my teacher doesn’t give up on me… and I’ll keep asking all my questions so they can start questioning too, I’ve got some really nice ones

They can't acknowledge the 587 date and can never change it. 607 leads to 1914, 1914 leads to Jesus' alleged choosing of WT as the only true religion in 1919. If WT changed from 607 to 587, it would destroy *every* claim and doctrine they've ever made establishing their authority as "God's Organization" and the one true religion.

When I was in back in the 80's, part of the lure to get you to go to the meetings was being there in case Jehovah shed some new light on something, and you didn't want to miss it. I guess, calling the person who wasn't there, or just passing along the info was out of the question. So, that said, do they think all these changes are a good thing? I didn't realise that regular JW's _still_ don't know about this stuff, I thought it had dropped along with the November cessation of counting time. I often talk to JW's at carts and am often surprised by me knowing something that they don't, although sometimes one of the group looks uncomfortable because they know but it's supposed to be out yet. Previously I found that there was a certain amount of dissonance among JW's due to not knowing what the very latest New Light was, but I think this is going to rise markedly now..
