Frank Sinatra said he was never on a talk show before 1984? He was on Johnny Carson in November 1976. Beyond that he actually hosted the Tonight Show a year later on November 14, 1977. A Monday night.

I don’t remember Jerry Lewis doing a show back in the 80’s. It was nice to see Sinatra on a talk show but he really didn’t say much. I would like to hear him talk about his performances and talk about his movies that he made. The role he took in The Man with the Golden Arm was fantastic. There was one scene in that movie where Sinatra was going through withdraws from being a junkie. It was so spot-on in acting, one would actually think he was a drug addict or just a great actor. I remember Sinatra said one time, he studied for that role by going into a rehab facility and he studied the addicts going through withdraws. If you want to see a great Sinatra performance in film, check out, The man with the Golden Arm. He should of gotten an Oscar for that performance.

I remember seeing this show and wanted it to last longer on television. Also in hope that Dean Martin would turn up one night. After seeing Frank Sinatra with Jerry Lewis. Charlie was great. Hi, I'm enjoying these videos you're posting very much, especially the ones from the "Jerry Lewis Show". But I'm from Spain and I don't get the last joke in Sinatra's interview. When Jerry's talking about the pictures in his scratchbook, what name does he say, apart from his own, Sinatra's, Al Jolson's and Dean Martin? And then, what does he say about "the singer" and "the band" in his two last interventions? Thanks very much, I love these old time videos, and this interview with Sinatra is amazing.
@givethechanceakid8 жыл бұрын
+TheRafermom I'm glad you're enjoying these videos. The singer was Jack Eigan. The joke was about Al Jolson as "that other singer" and how he should've been with a band. Frank Sinatra said that "he never had the training with a band." Of course this was the joke, since Al Jolson was a great singer.

Joe Postove It only lasted a week. “Alan Thicke created his own late night talk show to compete against NBC's highly rated The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. The series, entitled Thicke of the Night, was syndicated and only ran for one season before being crushed by Carson and cancelled in June 1984. Needing a replacement program, series distributor Metromedia gave Lewis an on-air tryout in Thicke's former slot. During the week of June 18, 1984, Lewis hosted The Jerry Lewis Show, with Charlie Callas as Lewis' announcer/sidekick.The show failed to attract audiences, and even with guests like Frank Sinatra, it still was not enough to keep viewers watching beyond its one-week trial run and ended after its June 22 episode.” en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jerry_Lewis_Show

Noted elsewhere in the comments, but bizarrely not in the video description ... this was a 5-episode try-out which aired only on WNEW-TV in New York City for a production company seeking a replacement for Alan Thicke's syndicated late night talk show Thicke Of The Night, which disastrously attempted to compete against The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson. Thicke's show was cancelled in June 1984 after one season. Based on Lewis' "try-out" his show was not picked up for production and it's glaringly obvious why. He was terrible!

Martin and Lewis were wonderful. Jerry on his own had some great moments. But at some point in time, the funny man had a difficult time masking his anger and was no longer funny. And the less relevant he became, the more angry he got. ... Anger is very seldom funny and by the 1980s, neither was Jerry Lewis. ... I loved him as a kid, but I didn't feel obligated to hang on to that love as an adult.

Lewis sucks all the energy out of the room. He has to be a smartass and he has to wear his ego on his sleeve (and what was Charlie Callas doing that he thought was so funny?). I heard Lewis say that he had a contract to do A show for 5 years for $40 million. And he said, in a rare moment of humility, that he knew it was a terrible idea. But when the show didn't end up going forward, he still got his $40 million. Aside from Sinatra appearing on this, it was a train wreck. There’s big talent in house here with Tony and Jerry and it wasn’t their fault either. It just seemed forced and disingenuous and it was a disappointing period in the transition of entertainment. The older mantra of entertainers was starting to see their hey day fade away from the main stream of entertainment even though they were still very much alive and loved and excellent at what they did. What was funny 5 or 10 years earlier just wasn’t funny or working anymore. It’s kinda hard to watch these types of things really.
