Interestingly. When I was unemployed I took a job working in the garden center at Lowe’s Part time. It paid crap. But I actually loved the job. It was laid back, I got to work with my hands. I’m a gardener so I love plants. I’d get in conversations about flowers and such with customers. I had so much in common with people. I liked the people I worked with. The customers most of the time were a joy to talk to. But. Unfortunately it didn’t pay the bills. And moving isn’t possible right now because of my son’s school situation. So I took a job back in my career field. Get paid 4x as much. But I hate it. I have nothing in common with my coworkers so I rarely talk. Its lonely. I am sitting all day at a desk. But. It pays the bills. So I’ve decided that when my son gets out of school I want to move. Into a smaller house, out in the country somewhere with a lower cost of living. Work someplace where I can actually enjoy my job. That is the plan. Either at the a garden center, landscaping nursery, or maybe even a winery. Since I love to make wine. And in the meantime I like to do volunteer stuff at my son’s school.

The pay is on par with existing, which is not actually living but not poor enough to delete yet, something in the middle. One job now affords a roof over your head and utilities, if you’re lucky. Job 2 for for and essentials to actually live. Job 3 for healthcare, savings, and retirement. 6 figures are needed or 3 jobs! I tried 2 full time and school decades ago and got so sick within a year that I almost died. Not everyone is cut out to do 3 jobs but that’s what it takes unless that 1 job actually pays well!? This ball has been rolling for about the last 20 years or so but seems to have picked up steam in the last 10- where even entry or mid level positions require mulitple rounds of interviews. The truth is, no amount of interviewing is going to absolutely guarantee a fit, especially in a process where both parties are just trying to present their best version of themsevles, and not necessarily who they are. I know as an employee. for example, that the interveiw process tells me absolutely nothing about what my actual working environment will be like daily. It's like trying to tell how good a movie will be by watching the trailer- of course they just show the good parts. The interview may go well and you may feel comfortable with the people you talked to you, but half of the time those are people who you will almost never seen again or at least won't be working on a daily basis. If after two interviews you can't figure it out, you're massively overcomplicating the process. It's almost seems like it's HR people trying to justify their positions by making it seem like it takes 6-7 interviews per candidate for a position that pays 50k a year.

I recently applied for a job and got a phone interview. It was a very small company and the position was in their production department. I have production/manufacturing experience and felt like I did well on the phone. The person was very nice and said they were looking to hire two people and said she would be contacting people for a second round/tour of their facility. I did send a thank you note after the interview but never heard back. I’ve been a diesel mechanic for 20 years and I was and am ready to be done with that part of my life. The job sucks, it doesn’t pay well unless you work 80 hours a week. And so I applied for literally ANYTHING I could find other than that. 5 month long story short… I took another heavy truck mechanic job. I applied for trades, remote data entry jobs, customer service jobs, parts counter jobs and even to be a park ranger and a cop. Only TWO of them called me. Looked at my resume while on the phone with me and proceeded to tell me that with my experience I should be looking for a job as a mechanic. The whole problem with the job market is that the employers DO have all the power. There was a time when the critical element was how you "Sell Yourself". Now it's only a matter of how you "Submit Yourself". Either way, it makes no difference because the employers have no accountability for their own stupid decisions...they simply blame the hires for their incompetence, which is the incompetence they were seeking in the first place by demanding unquestioned submission!!! There's something I don't get: there are hundreds if not a thousand candidates per post, but in many companies every single employee is hopelessly overworked and has to triage priorities! Even worse: they keep hiring people, but don't have time to train them and then fire them again, because they can't fulfil their intended role and this keeps happening over and over again while the long-term employees get worked to death and end up quitting which puts even more strain on the remaining employees... This doesn't merely affect low skill positions, but even positions requiring academic titles. One company with 150 employees had just a single person for QA, when at least 4 were needed.

The job market is full of retailers who have very high expectations for low or minimum wage pay... they want filet mignon for bologna prices! Also the marketplace does this stuff to people in trades like HVAC r workers they want to low ball pay them & treat them like they live as nomads but the guys in the hvac r trade are family men and want them to be on call 24/7 365 it's a bit ridiculous! My brother is highly qualified & doesn't want to stay in a hotel overnight with other dudes who want to party up... no he wants to go home at a decent time...5 o clock...dinner time! Or maybe even 6pm not travel to the next state over 🤦♀️get some one in that area! As the license is per state anyways!

It’s insane! I noticed that employers in fast food service and retail want these requirements in an industry that is known for high turnover 😂 They should be content that they are getting high schoolers because adults can’t live on minimum wage.
@RossLemon3 ай бұрын
You hit the nail on the head with HVAC work. You think you can make good money, but they start you off at trash little boy wages because "yew ain't got no experience hyuk." Meanwhile the fatass redneck contractor running crews of Mexicans (to save money on labor of course) just bought his lardass a brand new $100,000 pickup truck and a nice new fishing boat. And then they act like $22/hour is good pay lmfao. I live in Georgia and even here $22/hour is not GOOD pay. It's even worse if you already have obligations such as a family, house, or car. You can't take the massive drop in pay for a new career if your current expenses need you to make a lot more than what they're offering.

@Canoby3 ай бұрын
@@asadb1990 I've investigated that somewhat; eventually I'd like to secure that too, though in my personal research it seems like one would really want to set up multiple streams of passive/lower effort/maintenance income streams, that way if one dries up you aren't screwed, plus making a few grand a month from one side hustle is a lot more doable than trying to pull in like 7k+ etc. from one source per month

6:00 I disagree with this advice. Specialization in software development although sometimes necessary, is not a good bet. When the technology radically changes, then your specialization becomes worthless. I think its better to portray your self as an engineer that, say, can do apps + backend + db. The full android stack. When you're an engineer that can do the task of 3 specialized engineers a company will favor you significantly more. Your value proposition is significantly higher if you can show a wide range of competence. As someone who's had great success in software development interviews, showing your software skill versatility is extremely important--you want someone who can easily learn an ecosystem, not someone who's stuck in one thing because every company has a different stack. Furthermore, many companies have a lot of languages, apps, technologies, and frameworks. You'll almost certainly be given many hats and jobs to do.
@LonglostpussАй бұрын
Someone gets it. Multi-competency at a high level is not the same as jack of all trades master of none, there is a clear distinction. Versatility is the #1 differentiator that can help you stand out from the competition, you can still be offset against 200 other people claiming to be experts in one area of their field, so how is that going to help you?

@pondering17163 ай бұрын
@psyker4321 I suppose you have 5+ years experience in every programming language and piece of technology then? I know it's easy to pick up a language on the fly once you have a couple on your belt, but they're just going to minimize the risk and go with the person who already has the direct experience. It's going to be specialization into specific tech stacks. ...which is incredibly annoying because, again, picking up new technologies is easy, but recruiters can't comprehend this. You need keywords so they can play their dumb matching game
