It shows how school shootings happen and other tragedies. I don't think it promotes violence. The movie and how Arthur is portrayed is supposed to be sad or strike some kind of emotion in you when you watch him get beat up and mistreated and screwed over by his "friend" for no good reason at all and watch as he totally breaks and loses his shit. What a lot of people pulled from this movie is "be a nicer person", which is ironic.
